Stereotypes Of Women In Sports

Though being athletic and masculine have been a man’s physical description, women have fought to prove those gender stereotypes wrong. Women have been defeating the odds of athleticism and masculinity that men realized, but wanted to hide and not appreciate their work. Through time men and women have made an effort to come together to bring attention to the downgrading of women in sports to earn acknowledgement and respect. With this, history has described men and women’s sports as not equal but as history continues, women defeat the odds yet again. Women participating in athletic activities and sports date back millennia. Stories of women playing ball dates back to 800 BC in Homer’s works of The Iliad. Until the 1870’s, women never had the luxury of sports classified for women specifically. Multitasking was a high concern. People thought that each person had a set amount of energy and multitasking would deplete this energy rapidly that could cause harm to that individual. Women were highly encouraged to limit their activity so they would not fatigue their selves so quickly to avoid harm to their body. Doctors of this time believed this over-exertion could damage reproductive organs, decrease fertility rate, excessive stimulate emotions to the extent of a nervous breakdown, and even bizarre as decrease in a woman’s sexual inhibition if she excessively indulged in sports (Cahn par. 4).
