Stereotypical Gender Roles
Gender roles are norms that are expected from men and women. These norms were mainly established after World War II, late 1940s to mid-1950s, when all the men returned from the war and resumed working the jobs they had left in order to join the army and the majority of the women became home care providers, while some started working jobs, such as teachers, secretaries etc…. Today, although this is a different era, people are still fixated on the norms that emerged through the previous eras turning them into stereotypes. A stereotype is a fixated idea about a particular person or a thing. An article by Holly Brewer called the “List of Gender Stereotypes” gives the readers an indication of some of the stereotypes that are still believed to exist and used to describe gender roles today. After such norms arose in the 1950s, multiple filmmakers adapted this idea and conveyed it into their films. One of the biggest portrayal of gender roles was depicted by Alfred Hitchcock in his 1954 film, Rear Window. Although the main plot of the movie revolves around the main character’s, L.B. “Jeff” Jefferies, attempt to solve a murder; the director successfully manages to illustrate the idea of gender roles stereotypes that had emerged during that era through his style of making this film, which is broken down into four categories. Hitchcock uses his editing, mise-en-scene, sound, and cinematographic style to show the stereotypical gender roles in this movie.
Feminist: the person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Sexual stereotypes are deeply imbedded into today’s society. Ideals of the gender roles are passed down from generation to generation, creating a gap between what is socially acceptable for a woman to do and what is expected of a man. One thousand years ago humans chose dominance by physical capability, simply because it was essential for our survival, but the world has evolved. One thousand years ago physical strength was the most important part of survival for human beings. Men in general are physically stronger therefore it made sense to have a man lead. The world humans live in has evolved and is no longer run by the physically entailed, but by the most intelligent or creative(Adichie). Though this world has evolved, the gender expectations and stereotypes have stayed the same. Sexual stereotypes in America limit men and women to abide with,by the expectations of masculinity and feminism, create a sense of shame for women, and create a gap in today’s job industry.
Whether it is on TV or movie screens, the faces of white actors and actresses have always been prevalent in the media. For generations, many teenagers have been exposed to countless movies with white people in major roles. Moreover, the few roles that are cast to minorities feature the characters in their stereotypical personas (Bonilla-Silva 179). Even in advertising, Asians are placed in business settings, upholding the hard-working Asian stereotype (Taylor and Stern 50). As Taylor and Stern mention in their paper, the “model minority” has made the issue of stereotyping seem less important for Asians. The majority of these actors that are examined, regardless of race, are typically middle-age and well established in their acting careers. However, there is a lack of research behind Asian youth acting and their perceived roles. To account for this knowledge deficit, I examine how whiteness influences the media to portray youth actors as individuals that stray from their stereotypes in an attempt to achieve whiteness. My research site centres around Fresh Off the Boat (FOB), a comedic television series featuring a Taiwanese family. The title of the show Fresh Off the Boat or “FOB” is also a term used to describe a person that is considered too ethnic and as a term of denigration. While the significance of gender roles has declined in the past fifty years, they still play an integral part in our perception of others based on their gender. Gender roles create gender stereotypes that influence our view of someone and their aptitude in work and child caring. Gender stereotypes depict women as caring, compassionate, and kind; however, gender stereotypes also imply negative qualities for women such as cranky, overly emotional, and submissive. On the other hand, gender stereotypes classify men not only as dominant, assertive, and powerful, but also as aggressive, violent, and uncaring. Many people apply gender roles in how they view other’s aptitudes and responsibilities in a work or home setting, but by doing so they subconsciously discriminate against a person for his gender. Extreme Feminists focus on the discrimination and harassment women face in everyday life due to traditional gender roles and complain that “men have it so good”. However, extreme feminists fail to realize, due to their blind but justified hatred for traditional gender roles that supposedly benefit men, traditional gender roles disadvantage men as well. Similar to how many women fail to climb up the corporate ladder because their superiors view them as too caring and soft to hold a demanding leadership position, many people look down on men when they care for their own children considering them too tough and insensitive to take care of children properly and label their care as
I have chosen to focus this paper on the portrayal of gender stereotypes and expectations as seen in the book Ethan Frome written by author Edith Wharton. The myth of gender roles plays a pivotal role in This Boy’s Life- A Memoir by Tobias Wolff. Specifically, the myth of masculinity shapes much of the actions and experiences that occur. Toxic masculinity is commonly described as socially-constructed attitudes that describe men as being violent, unemotional, and sexually aggressive. The rules of masculinity that are implied in the memoir include displays of physical dominance such as fighting against others, use of weapons for power and control, domestic violence, and trying to win at everything. Sexual virility is discussed as bragging about sexual conquests and talking crudely about women around other men but generally trying to be hyper sexual. Another, key aspect of masculinity is to not show any emotion as others will perceive you as being weak which leads characters being unable to express how they feel about themselves and their conflicts. Males are taught to not get mad but to get even; this means retaliating by stealing or other means in order to get revenge. Within the memoir, Tobias’ perception of masculinity and his idea of what man should look and act like is demonstrated through Roy. Qualities that include being: “an expert hunter, conventionally handsome, [a mechanic or handy in general], does not need to talk more than needed, having a tattoo”(14). For thousands of years, established gender roles have been a part of our society. Women are commonly known as sensitive, emotional, or passive. On the contrary, men are described as rational, competitive, independent, or aggressive. Believing women are more emotional than men is stereotyping. However, the stereotype is not entirely untrue. Development of gender roles is often conditioned more by environmental or cultural factors than by hereditary or biological factors. The development of gender roles between men and women involves the inference of peer community of each gender, the communication style of male and female and the intimacy or connection level of men and women.
Moving onto gender roles and ideas, these characteristics in genders are needed in any sort of story to suit the values and attitudes of the people of that time. Gender stereotypes are a major piece to the puzzle of a film. Women are generally seen as less dominant, pushovers, the cares of everyone and that they have no independence. Whist men are seen as the more dominant, masculine, heroes, brave and courageous. This is across all genres of movies, the girl is the damsel in distress and the boy ends up saving her at the end of it.
In the movie ‘Rear Window’ by Alfred Hitchcock, there is a distinct view of the world and how, in the director’s opinion, men and women fit in. It helped pinpoint some recurring elements about men and women and how they interact together. Men are shown as damaged and needing help, while women are shown as caregivers. Throughout the movie, feminine independence and strength are shown multiple times through the characters and their dialogs, despite taking place during a time period where men were dominate. Feminism plays an important role in the film throughout several different scenes.
Every day I am at school, my mother stays at home and my father goes to work through the New Jersey transit train. My mother is always watching culinary videos and cooking from afternoon until around 6 p.m. in the evening. My father does not come back at home until 7 p.m. When he arrives home, he simply eats dinner and watches the television. I was raised to think that I would have to work at a white collared job one day. I thought that men go to work while women bake cookies and go for a walk each day. During the weekends, both of my parents are at home together. However, my father does not insist on helping my mother in cooking food unless he is told to do so. Therefore, I have never seen my father and mother ever cook together with love even though they have so much time off on the weekends. Every child wants their parents to work as a pair instead of being divided on who should complete certain tasks. However, this event that every child wants to see their family is not fulfilled due to the discriminating gender roles that are part of our everyday life. Gender roles have been part of human existence for a long time and it affects how men and women are seen in society. Being born with a certain gender means you will be expected to follow the stereotypes pertaining to your gender. For example, boys will become masculine as they are exposed to the stereotypes that men are physically stronger, love sports, go to jobs and skilled at math. Girls will learn to be feminine
Movies will be completely biased on gender, race, orientation, and economic standing to catch the attention of anyone and everyone. The tendency to stereotype in movies seems to affect it’s audiences on usually a personal level. Hence, the reason for either the positive, curious, or negative attention it draws. An example for a gender stereotyped scene in film could be revealed in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. In this film, the female lead role plays a woman who joins an all male news team with a dream in becoming a news anchor in the 70s. Now during that time, all news anchors were white males. Imagine, a world where you cannot vote, hold a job, or even walk down the street without another person’s permission? That is what it would have been like, if you were born as a female around the early 1900’s. Flash forward almost a century later and women are still in a struggle with the opposite sex in todays’ society. Women for decades have battled for equal rights. But will we ever get there? Probably not, but I certainly would like to think so. Fair and equal wages, the opportunity for job advancement, affordable childcare, and abortion rights. These are just a few in a long list of rights that we as women have been pushing for since the very beginning.
Throughout history, humans have always been expected to act a certain way depending on their sex. These societal expectations are called gender roles. (Rathus, 2010, p.447). These roles begin to develop even before a child is even out of the womb. A mother may decorate their nursery pink if they are having a daughter because “girls like pink,” and “boys like blue.” Gender roles should not be confused with gender stereotypes. A gender stereotype is a narrow way of thinking about how men and woman are obligated to behave. For example, men have always been considered to be the breadwinners of the family. Females, on the other hand, are seen more as the gentle homemakers that stay home to clean and take care of the children. (Rathus, 2010, p.447). These types of stereotypes have caused certain out-of-the-home jobs to be mainly categorized for either women or men, causing an even more distinct line between the genders.
Children learn at a very early age what it means to be a boy or a girl in our society. As children grow and develop, the gender stereotypes they are exposed to at home are reinforced by many elements in their environment and are thus perpetuated throughout childhood followed by adolescence. One major societal issue uprising with the way children are raised in today’s society is the gender specific dressing for boys and girls. The history with gender specific dressing is a one sided masculine enforced point of view for centuries. As children move through childhood and into adolescence, they are exposed to many factors which influence their behaviors and attitudes regarding gender roles. It is difficult for a child in today’s society to grow to adulthood without experiencing some form of gender bias or stereotyping. The question lies whether the view of gender specific dressing shall change or stay the same. As society continues to evolve and grow so does the tolerance of new uprising views for the general purpose of equality and freedom to do as pleased. Children regularly learn to adopt gender roles which are not always fair to both sexes. These attitudes and behaviors are generally learned first in the home but then reinforced by their environment, school experience, and media viewing. How women are perceived by others, and how women perceive themselves, impacts their leadership roles in the work place. Stereotypes and gender biases are themes women have been dealing with for centuries. How women are perceived by social medial and television have been influencing how they are treated by men, and how they view themselves when it comes to taking a leadership role in their organization. According to Omega Institute (2012), “The rapidly shifting landscape of new media and technology, including reality television and celebrity culture, continue to reinforce gender stereotypes” (p. 1). This leads to men still growing up viewing women as home makers versus bread winner. With more women entering leadership roles in the work place they lack the respect from men due to how these men have grown up to know the typical role of a man and woman. Men tend to feel belittled due to the gender stereotypes seen on television, and this leads to women struggling to succeed as a leader with the lack of support from their male counterparts. Lack of confidence with women in the workplace is also influenced and effected by how women are perceived in social media and television. According to Steele (2005), “Exposure to stereotypic commercials persuade women to avoid leadership roles” (p. 276).
