Major League Baseball Steroid Era Controversy In major league baseball there has been too much controversy with steroids. Many baseball players have been caught using steroids. Some of the baseball players that have been caught include the following: Alex Rodrigues, Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire. Alex Rodriguez was caught using steroids and was suspended from major league baseball for an entire year. The New York Yankees were without Alex Rodriguez for the 2014 season including during the playoffs. Barry Bonds had an amazing career with the San Francisco Giants and was described as “the greatest baseball player who ever lived” and he set a record on home runs. Barry Bonds was accused of lying under oath about his steroid use. The time that
Aaron Henry was 13 when he started taking steroids. He wanted to gain an edge in football. After four years of using steroids, Henry was 5'9" and weighed 210 pounds. He gained weight and power from taking steroids, but that is not all they gave him. He experienced spells of vomiting, urinating blood, liver and kidney damage, ulceration over three-fourths of his stomach, a mild heart attack, and an aggressive personality (James 18). Henry was only aware of steroids' positive effects. He was unaware about their side effects and health risks. Much of the public, just like Henry, is uninformed or wrongly informed about steroids. The media fails to show the negative aspects of using steroids. Because of this, many people think that
The Major League Baseball organization is one of many sport organizations that takes a strong stance on athletes that use performance enhancing drugs. Mark McGwire played for the Cardinals in 1998. He had an amazing career as he broke the homerun record with 70 homeruns. Through his accomplishments, there was speculation that he took steroids. He was questioned about it in Federal Court and at first, he denied it. Later on, he admitted using Andro, which is a form of anabolic steroids. Another baseball player had a very similar story. Barry Bonds played for the San Francisco Giants. He likewise had very notable achievements, such as beating McGuire for the homeroom record and he passed Hank Aaron as the career all-time home run hitter.
Baseball is known as America’s favorite pastime. Any fan of baseball has heard the name Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds is one of the best baseball players of all time statistically. He leads the MLB in home runs in a single season (73), most career home runs (762), MVP awards (7), walks in a single season (232), and another 13 more records. Barry Bonds career was shrouded with a shadow. He was abusing steroids in the late 1990s and early 2000s. After winning 4 straight MVPs, and setting the single season record for homeruns, the MLB established the steroid and performance enhancing drugs bans. Barry Bonds was one of the athletes under investigation. Barry Bonds’ Steroid Scandal was a huge shock to the sport of baseball and the world of sports.
cheating has always been around and in baseball Steroids are a Performance Enhancing Drug or PED for short that help with strength or players have also been known to use Human Growth Hormone or HGH, “Wonder if steroids helped Roger Clemens to lead the Houston Astros and New York Yankees to the World Series?” (Bilson) Ty Cobb sharpened spikes, and bet on baseball and he's still in the HOF, or how Mike Scott doctored baseballs with an emery board, or Alberte Belle, Sammy Sossa with Corked bats a corked bat is a bat that does not have the wood filling super balls can be put in there in place for it many different things can be used in place of that. Also how can anyone forget Barry Bonds with steroids how much did that help bonds break the All-Time home run record? How about Triss Speaker and the scandal of him fixing games , Gaylord Perry doctored baseball with various substances to throw off hitters. Other players other than Bonds have admitted to Steroid use Paul Molitor Class of 2004 and Wade Boggs Class of 2005 both admitted to steroid use, Boggs later admitted to being a sex addict on the Barbra Walters show. Mike Piazza alleged steroid scandal his back acne grew significantly and his substantial amount of hair growth on his back. Cheaters never win has been said through out the history of the world. I fully believe that is the honest
“Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Jose Canseco, Alex Rodriguez, all of these baseball players have admitted to the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs)” (“Performance Enhancing Drugs”). “Mark McGwire broke Roger Maris’s 37 year old record of 61 home runs. McGwire hit a total of 70 home runs in 1998. Sammy Sosa also broke Maris’s record with 66 homeruns.” In “2001 Barry Bonds broke Mark McGwire’s home run record by hitting 73”. “In 2009 Sosa, Bonds, and McGwire all admitted to using PEDs during their careers” (“Sports Tarninshed”). Many professional baseball players have admitted to the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs through out their career. Performance Enhancing Drugs have given these players an unfair advantage
Barry Bonds and steroid use continues to be a very hot topic in the professional sports world. The history that Bonds erased from the game because of his drug use, especially the records that he erased from all time greats such as Babe Ruth and Willie Mays, is a great deal to the fans and historians of Major League Baseball. Barry Bonds broke two of the biggest and most well-known records in the Major Leagues. In 2001, Bonds broke the single season home run record by hitting 73 home runs in one season,
Another issue is players who have broken records and tested positive for steroids during the period they broke the record. “Although increased speed and arm strength have also been linked to the use of steroids, home run statistics have glaringly
Since Major League Baseball all-star Ken Caminiti openly admitted to Sports Illustrated to have used steroids during his career, steroid use as a muscle and performance enhancer has been uncovered and become a big issue Major League Baseball is wrestling with. The “ongoing and delicate subject, baseball’s dirty, little secret that is no secret anymore,” is a huge and growing problem (Curry B20). Now that light has been shed on the issue, critics are beginning to realize the magnitude of this problem and do not like it. Steroids are a cheating virus that is spreading quickly. Users cheat other players, themselves, the fans, and the game itself. Action must be taken to rid Major League Baseball of this virus
This was only the beginning, soon the media would start to look down more upon what is going on in baseball and they would pursue it. In 2002 the Major League Baseball Players Association executive director was asked a question by Senator Byron Dorgan, “Is there a problem?” The Senator know there was a problem because a recent National League Most Valuable Player admitted to using steroids in a Sports Illustrated cover story. The MVP Ken Caminiti even admitted to no regrets for steroid use because of the prevalence in the major league (Steroid Era).
He may not have been proven guilty, just suspected use was enough to have a cloud over his reputation. There is even talk among the baseball analysts that his records set should be removed from the record books because steroid use can be viewed as a form of cheating used to accomplish such feats.
players who admitted to taking these performance enhancers. Luckily for him he took these steroids in his 2003 season with the Texas rangers, and the MLB didn’t start testing until the 2004 season. So he couldn’t get in trouble really for taking the drug the previous season. Alex Rodriguez still to this day catches a lot of grief for his past actions when he was juicing. I believe this was a really smart choice for Rodriguez to come out saying that he did take performance enhancers in 2003. He was able to keep his name for the most part; he is still respected amongst the baseball world. Rodriguez still may suffer the ultimate punishment for his actions even though he did do the right thing by coming out and admitting that he cheated the game. Rodriguez may not make it to the hall of
In 2014 the famous baseball player Alex Rodriguez was suspended for the season due to testing positive for using performance-enhancing drugs. The Yankees star continuously denied any allegations connecting him with the steroids but eventually claimed to be using products from a bio anti aging clinic in order to treat an injury. According to an article written by Allen St. John, “he has tested positive for both Primobolan and excess testosterone” (St. John, 2009). Eventually, Alex confessed to using steroids to avoid any more persecution and in hope that it might save how people viewed his career. Over the course of the situation Alex Rodriguez chose to handle the situation in a manner he deemed would conceal the truth from everyone. This in turn may cause a great deal of baseball fans to question his contribution to the sport as they further learn the details about his extensive use of steroids over the course of recent history.
Baseball is one of my favorite sports and the fact is that it is so thrilling that when you hit the ball you get a huge adrenaline rush so you run as fast as you can to the base. But later on steroids were introduced to baseball; there were so many athletes that ended up using the Performance Enhancing Drugs or (PEDs) but when people were seeing the hits they did not just go into the field, there were more home runs than the normal record there were in a season. When it first used people didn’t know how people were hitting so many home runs, but it made the game more interesting and people loved it and when people found out it that what the players were doing was basically cheating, some people thought it was okay because it made it more interesting, but there were some people who were unhappy with the players who were cheating.
Steroids are a hot topic of debate and controversy in the world of athletes and sports. Steroids fall under the umbrella of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) and are a dark cloud that have been hovering over the sports world for a long time. In the world today, steroids are the most relevant in major league baseball. Many baseball players, such as Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun, and Mark McGwire, just to name a few, have ruined their reputations because of steroids. There are repercussions for PED use in major league baseball, which have cut down on the substance abuse by players but have nowhere near eliminated the problem.
The sport that has gotten the most attention on the subject of steroids is Major League Baseball. Due to the suspected prevalence of them from the late 80’s up until the present day, the so-called baseball purists now question all the records and achievements
