Epideictic speech is a speech praising or blaming a person or event in order to comment on the community’s values. There are several factors that make Steve Jobs’ speech is highly interesting. First and foremost, Steve Jobs made a strong opening in his speech. He starts his speech with “I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation”. He is praising the graduates and shows some humility by admitting that he had never graduated but feel proud to be with the graduates on that day. Anaphora is the repetition of sequence words at the beginning of clauses. It can be seen in line 33, with the repetition of word “every”, and later in line 35 to 36, the repetition of word “about”, the other example in line 85 to 86, the repetition of words “ the only way to” , repetition of “all” in sentence “all external expectations, all ride, all fear of embarrassment or failure” and lastly the repetition of “don’t” in sentence, “ don’t waste living someone else’s life.
