In Jobs’ commencement speech he makes several claims about death, what it is like to look in the face of it, and what dying truly arises in a person. There is ease in decisions, no fear to hold you back, but also the distaste for death itself because, as Jobs claims, “No one wants to die.”(Jobs, Steve). I agree with Jobs’ theories and assumptions on death and what it does for our lives. Jobs asserts that death, or being on the brink of, aids in making bid decisions in life. One reason for this may be that the dying have nothing to lose, they are “already naked” and vulnerable. Decisions become easy when there is no risk, no long term consequences, and no one else to hold you back from what you want. Deciding becomes only a matter of desire, as all other factors fall away in the face of death. No one but you matters when you have it the end of your rope. Fear also falls away when death nears. Fearing embarrassment or failure become mute because neither can follow you into death. When you die there is no longer a reputation to maintain, so mistakes, failure, and embarrassment do not carry any weight. Roger Ebert also lost all fear on the brink of death, “I know it is coming and I do not fear it.”(Jones, Chris). For there is …show more content…
Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there.”(Jobs, Steve). Why would anyone? It is not so much fear of death itself, but a fear of the unknown, no one knows what is really on the other side and that is what frightens people. Hamlet also fears the other side as seen in his ‘To Be or Not To Be’ soliloquy, “To die, to sleep, perchance to dream, ay there’s the rub, for in that sleep of death what dreams may come.”(Hamlet, line 9-11). It is not only that we do not want to die, we do not really want to see what waits on the other side, as long as we are living we can picture whatever we desire rather than face the reality of
“When he himself might his quietus make With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear, To grunt and sweat under a weary life…” When reading Hamlet’s Soliloquy, this line made me question my own opinion on the value of life. If life is such a struggle, and there are so many obstacles that seem impossible to conquer, why not just end it? End the suffering: End the complication: Just kill yourself in hopes that the afterlife holds something better than than this daunting voyage. The answer is most people scared shitless. “But the dread of something after death… No traveler returns, puzzles the will.” When we die, there is no coming back; death is a journey and “No traveler returns.” Not knowing what comes after might be what keeps many of us alive. The fear of the
Everyone consciously or subconsciously is afraid of death because we don’t really know what happens after we die. Many people wonder if our population is growing how can reincarnation be real. Three lines of evidence demonstrate reincarnation is real. There have been multiple stories where young children have remembered parts of their past life leading to the idea of reincarnation. Doctors have done multiple studies on patients that have had near death experiences (NEDs) and what they experienced. Many of the patients said they saw a bright tunnel or encountered spirits. Plato said you will never sleep as in you will never be dead for good and, you will always end up coming back to life.
It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” (Jobs 21-22) Why would one talk about death at a commencement speech especially to a bunch of young adults? The reason why he spoke about death was to motivate everyone into not wasting time on things they don’t enjoy. Everyone should follow their hearts, and make their own decisions. Steve told the graduates “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma-which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary (Jobs 22). In other words, it is very simple. Steve wants the audience to understand how important it is to make your own choices in life because it will pave a path to happiness, and you won’t have regrets because life is short.
If we run away from death, we may run away from other things that are scary in life. This is especially true when looking at death through Socrates’ point of view that we should not fear it because we do not know what it actually is; we as just cast death out as something bad. It is also important for younger people to understand that death is something that everyone will sooner or later have to deal with and fearing death will not help change that. Even more importantly, death could be something wonderful according to Socrates. So we should not fear the unknown even though it may seem like it’s scary at first. Death can be dealt with like any other challenges that we face in our daily lives, rationally and without fear. Once we experience death, we may find that it may have been not so scary after all just like everything else may be in
The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” (Mark Twain). This quote from the famous American writer is the basis for what became one of the hardest ideas to comprehend, death. Death has always been a complex term, causing one to struggle with what the true definition is. It is also hard to wrap your mind around what does it truly mean to die. These are the questions we long for the answer. Whether we acknowledge it or not, death has always been feared by many. Death remains an impossible question, one that has been unexplained since beginning of time. Even though dying is a natural, we as a human race still fear it. What can be done to defeat this never-ending battle? According to Montaigne’s “To Philosophize is to Learn to Die” and Cory Taylor’s “Questions for Me About Dying” we can overcome this by living to the fullest, living with no regrets, living a legacy, and lastly not fearing the inevitable. If you want to conquer the question of life, live in the moment.
The fear of death seems to be based on two things: the finality of death and the uncertainty of what follows. Many works have been written on the topic, some to offer consolation, others hope, and still others to urge readers to correct their
“To fear death, gentlemen, is no other than to think oneself wise when one is not, to think one knows what one does not know. No one knows whether death may not be the greatest of all blessings for a man, yet men fear it as if they knew that it is the greatest of evils.” Socrates one of the greek philosophers in the 400’s BC, gives a reasonable question about the fear of death. Death affects people and characters very differently in life. In the world of literary works two very well known authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe present two works that both deal with the effects of this very thing the fear of death. Laid out in the next few pages we shall see that there are many connections to
When you think of the word “death” what exactly comes to mind? For most people you may think of pitch black darkness for death is the opposite, the recipical of life just like darkness is the opposite of light it remains a mysterious phenomenon that we all must experience. Just like darkness we don’t know what’s inside it, we have no idea what happens after death therefore we fear it. In fact in Eckhart Tolle’s article “The Origin of Fear” he brings to us a thesis of “but ultimately all fear is the ego's fear of death, of annihilation. To the ego, death is always just around the corner.”(Tolle) This is a very powerful realization that all fear is the fear of death, we fear a spider because it may kill us, we have a fear of heights because we may fall to our death. But fortunately for us, in the novel “Tuesdays With Morrie” we have a dying Socially Professor Morrie Schwartz who is just on the bridge between life and death. He gives us another realization that we shouldn’t fear death for it is not this be all end all concept, that it may be the opposite of life but shouldn’t be considered a villainous ego and that death is needed for it is the great equalizer in nature.
When people ponder death they wonder about the unknown with trepidation. As a young man, William Cullen Bryant wrote the "Thanatopsis." His thoughts progress from the fear of death to the acceptance of the event. People should not fear death because everyone dies and becomes a part of nature.
“Fear is quite powerful because it grabs a hold of us and prevents us from speaking openly,” says Erin Coriell (Coriell). Fear overcomes us and we submit to it. Everyone has a fear and in some cases, the fear can often negatively impact the person’s every day to day life (FearOf. net.). Often she or he will refuse to leave the home because of this fear (FearOf.net.). Everyone has their own point of view on every fear there is. What would you do if someone said that they had the fear of death? Being deathly afraid is not the same as being afraid of death, is it? Should we really be afraid of what is to come? Few people are actually able to talk about it, to show their views of death. Edgar Allen Poe and Geoffrey Chaucer willingly showed the world the thoughts that they had.
In 2005, Steve jobs discussed the value of death entering someone's life. In Steve’s speech he shared how his cancer turned his life around. The initial toll it paid on him and his family was unbearable. At first there was a lot of pain and confusion that lead to lots of tears. Then from one of the scariest moments in his life came some of the most beautiful moments. Not knowing whether or not that day, week or year was his last, Steve and his family began to cherish every opportunity they had with each other. .As hard as it may have been, in the end , Steve realized that the idea of death is not terrible. Cancer and death itself is what made a man so successful in life realize that you need to live every day like it's your last.
Jobs claims that death is something none of us want to endure; in some ways he’s right. We are all scared of the unknown. He claims, “Death is very likely the single best invention of life.” (Steve Jobs) It gives us an escape; a kind of out with the old, in with new feel. Jobs described death as life’s “change agent” meaning it is the one destination that everyone will get to at one point. Death is the one thing that every single person in the world has in common, and yet we are all so afraid of it.
Is it only the ticking of ones watch or the beating of ones heart, for when the heart stops beating, so too does one stop hearing the ticking of the watch. The fact that many view death as a permanent ending to a temporary existence is what inspires fear. This fear is irrational. The ending of physical material does not dictate that ones soul or a person’s attributes don’t live on. Many believe in a wide range of religions all stating what happens in the afterlife, whether the religion has one or not, and this could both strike fear into people or give people hope of what will happen after they die.
First to understand our fear of death we have to understand how different cultures view death. To understand this question I looked into how people deal with death depending on cultures, and my source by Sarah Rafique directly answered my question. It talks about a man who is dying and how the culture he has shapes his view of death, and the
In this essay, I will talk try to talk about why there is nothing to be afraid of in death. It is evident that death cannot be experienced, in the physical form. This is because by definition, death is the end of all physical experience. Therefore, there is no reason to have fear for something you will not experience. According to Ruch 2012, in the event of a physical death and the spiritual plane exists, then we would suppose that there would be a spiritual sense of freedom which one should not be afraid of either.
