Having the mind and determination to become successful isn’t an easy task. Success isn’t considered a gift, it should be a hard task to achieve and it matters how it is accomplished. Success
For example, Chris Langan claims that, “[he hasn’t] met anybody who was as poor when they were kids as [his] family was” (Gladwell 91). He attended Reed College since he was able to get a scholarship from them. Unfortunately, his mother forgot to submit his financial aid form after the first semester and this spurred up another array of issues. Although Langan’s intellect was exceedingly high, his lack of persistence and poverty led to him being held back from his full potential. On the other hand, Bill Gates was able to benefit from his family background. There were nine extraordinary opportunities given to Bill Gates which allowed him to be able to practice and fulfill the “10,000 hour” rule. Of these nine opportunities, the most crucial one could not occur in the absence of his family's wealth. Gate’s parents sent him to Lakeside, a private school where he would become fond of a computer programming club. Whereas Bill Joy struggled to find a computer to program on as a college student, “Bill Gates got to do real-time programming as an eighth grader in 1968” (Gladwell 51). From there on, Gates was given several more opportunities such as a chance to program for free at C-Cubed. If he had been raised in poverty similar to Langan, Gates’ success could have pivoted in a completely different
In Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, his central premise is that success is not obtained the way most people think it is. We are often told that success come from sheer luck, or a triumphant rags-to-riches story. In Outliers Malcolm Gladwell tells the story of many successful outliers such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, The Beatles, and many more. He breaks down each story and points out what actually made that persona successful. While breaking down the story her also introduces the reader to what he believe are the actual keys to success. In the book he talks about The Matthew Theory, The 10,000 hour Rule, Practical Intelligence vs Analytical Intelligence, and Demographic Luck.
One can say that being successful is based on your actions and how you prepare for the future. In “Outliers: The Story of Success”, written by Malcom Gladwell, he stated that many factors come into play regarding the success of an individual. In regards to Mike Honda, He was a congressman from, California and spent his early years in a Japanese internment camp. Whether if the person was talented or not, Gladwell made intelligent observations when thinking about successfulness. I completely agree with Gladwell on most of the points that he made and I believe that if most of the guidelines such as the 10,000-hour rule, advantageous era of birth etc… are followed, then one will have the opportunity to be successful. But not all of what Gladwell stated like the Matthew Effect (Wright P, 2003), are needed to become successful.
There are tons of people in our world today who have become very successful and these people find success in different ways. Some people work hard their whole life to achieve success and others just seem to be born talented in
Having the desire to be successful is one thing but without the doing the little things you will never get there. Successful people are committed to doing something every single day. Regardless of what is going on in their lives they work on their craft. They overcome the daily battle between procrastination and motivation. Every day, most people have a list of things they want to do; need to do; or should do; and what they don’t want to do. It’s these daily choices that are influenced by our discipline and
How does one reach success? In the novel Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, the main perspective of the novel is that success does not come from an individual simply by being lucky. In fact, success roots from our history, the environment we surround ourselves in, our values, and our cultural legacy. Every human being has the option of becoming successful despite a person’s disability, or the background a person comes from. Success is a gift. Gladwell describes what outliers mean to him, “Outliers are people who have been given opportunities and have the strength and presence of mind to seize them” (Gladwell 267). Malcolm Gladwell explained that often people are categorized into different groups of talent. Naturally, the group
Being successful in life is not always easy, because of different ways that success can be achieved. With many theories out there on success, it is hard to figure out what is needed to be done to gain success. In everyone’s lives there are many different beliefs out there that can lead to it. In the book “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell, there are numerous theories that are covered with examples of successful people. They clearly show how success can be done in not just one way but in many others. The most known people that are considered to be successful are billionaires and celebrities. They all have gained success in their lives in their own diverse ways. A good set of successful people in the world today to talk about are Mark Zuckerberg, Whitney Houston, and Nicholas Sparks. These people all come from different backgrounds before gaining their success. Malcolm Gladwell discussed many theories in the book “Outliers” that can relate to the success of the people mentioned above. The true knowledge behind success can be achieved in numerous ways.
More specifically, the circumstances and factors that lead to success. In today’s society, success is seen as something brought unto people wholly and entirely through a singular person’s abilities and effort. That line of thinking is inherently flawed, seeing as “success is not a random act. It arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities,” (Gladwell 155). Where and when a person is born matters.
Many people look at those who are successful and think it is so simple. An example, Slash from Guns N' Roses, he makes shredding on guitar look simple. The thing is though, no one looks at all the hard work that people put in to be successful. Drug addicts, they go through relapses but they still keep moving forward and kick the drugs. Another example would be body builders, it's not like one day they magically decide that they want to have intense muscles. It takes time to be successful. No one really knows how hard it is to be successful until they actually try.
