A good man written by Mark Shriver and Still I rise by Maya Angelou represent multiple core values including empowerment, excellence and identity. Both selections of readings represent each core value in a way that relates to each other but also differs from one another. A good man represents the author as being a man who is searching to be a better man as his dad was widely known as. Mark shriver tells a story of his life searching for his identity and through this story you see his achievements, excellence, and the overall empowerment of his story. The poem is a series of questions that the character is directing apparently to some other being or person. The character wants to know why this other person wants to see them down or if they want to see them broken. In response to the other person, the character also asks questions such as, “does my sassiness upset you?” and “does my haughtiness offend you?”. I think the point of this is that the character is being a strong person and achieving excellence through who they are. The character does not care what the other being is saying and that is the whole point of the poem. The point is that no matter how much this person will “cut me with your eyes” or “shoot me with your words” the character will rise and overcome all of these negativities. There are multiple examples within the book which shows the empowerment of the story. For example, empowerment in the speeches. Each family is represented as a strong political figure or some type of person with influence. Shriver's father empowers the lives of many people including those of lower wealth. This is shown through the shrivers and how they host the special olympics, the program for people less fortunate in other countries, and even Mark Shrivers own program to help kids who were in juvenile detentions. This is voicing for other people which is extremely powerful to me. The shrivers help those who are “too small” compared to many to seek a voice. Another example of this is how Shriver’s father did not follow the generations regime. This is explained in the book how the father included Shriver's mother as an equal not just a housewife or someone lower than who he was. I believe these are examples of empowerment because it shows how the Shrivers stood up for those not noticed or those who were shoved in the corner as not
