Stopping Binge Drinking on College Campuses

Fact or Fiction “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking,” a text written Henry Wechsler was first introduced to me in my English 102 class. In this Essay Wechsler brought to the reader’s attention that binge drinking was major problem on many college campuses. Wechsler aims to convince readers that binge drinking is a problem that needs to be stopped. Some of Wechsler’s statements made in this text were persuasive while others were opinions. Wechsler begins this essay by introducing a study conducted at Harvard School of Public Health about drinking patterns in a significant number of American college students (Wilhoit and Wechsler 20-23). By placing this study and some of its results in the text it helped set the mood for the text. As a reader it made me feel as if Wechsler knew what he was talking about and researched his topic at hand. Also with him putting that into his text it helps add to his and the texts credibility. This instance is not the only instance that Wechsler used in his text. Wechsler placed more recent studies after his initial one to help support it. Shortly after that Wechsler went on to discuss the center of binge drinking which are fraternities and sororities on college campuses (Wilhoit and Wechsler 20-23). This statement Wechsler made is an opinion but a logical opinion. Fraternities and sororities host parties where a lot of alcoholic beverages can be readily available.
