Story Of An Hour Critical Analysis

Decent Essays

Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour was first published in 1894 (The Story of An Hour). The main theme of this story is oppression and loss of freedom for people, especially when they are married. In the Era this story was written marriage bound a couple together in a union that could not be undone except through death. The oppression happens to both women and men. This theme is demonstrated many times throughout the story. Chopin keeps us in Mrs. Mallard’s head through the entire duration of the story, letting us listen to her thoughts. Chopin uses character actions and imagery to further illustrate the emotions that Mrs. Mallard is feeling. There was caution in how the news would be broken to Mrs. Mallard. It was her sister that would tell her of the accident. Mrs. Mallard had a weak heart, but when she was told about her husband’s accidental death, she accepted it immediately. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.” (Chopin) Even though Mrs. Mallard had the reputation of being delicate, she was not like other women who denied death and she faced the strong emotions that arose from the news in a straightforward way. She went to her room alone and wanted to deal with her grief by herself. The following passage occurs later, “She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength” (Chopin). The use of the phrase “bespoke repression” is powerful in this sentence. The meaning of bespoke is custom made or asked for in advance, indicates the lines in her face were caused by her personal repression (Bespoke). The second part of the sentence “and even a certain strength” again refers to the fact that she is a strong person, yet the story doesn’t give indication that she is remotely strong. The way the news was broken to Mrs. Mallard suggest fear that in her weakened condition her heart would give out over the news that she lost her husband. Special precautions were taken in
