Symbolism A symbol, is a representation of a thought or an idea. In the Story of an Hour Kate Chopin does a great job of using many examples as symbolism. She uses these symbols to represent the main theme she wants to get across to the readers. And the idea she wants to get across is the renewal of Mrs. Mallards life. The three major examples of symbolism are, when she says blood coursed through her body, the use of nature, and when she welcomes her new life with open arms. The first example that symbolized the renewal of life is when Mrs. Mallard learns that her husband “died”. In the story, Chopin writes “her pulse beat faster, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body” (Chopin 65). This is a good example because blood itself symbolizes life. And in Mrs. Mallards case before she found out her husband died, she was just living day by day in a deathlike state. But when she heard the news her blood began to pump through her body, giving her the feeling that she had been given new life. In the example, it also said that the blood warmed and relaxed her body. The Story of an Hour takes place in the beginning of spring, and that plays a very important role in symbolizing the renewal of life. When one thinks about Spring they imagine flowers blooming, leaves reappearing, and the animals coming out of their dens. Spring is when all the flowers, plants, and trees come back to life after staying dead in the cold and harsh winter. The winter symbolizes Mrs. Mallards life before her husband “died”. It was very cold and dull no flowers to bring out the color and joy in life. Then, when she heard the news winter was finally over and her Spring was finally starting. She began to feel like she was coming back to life. She felt as if there was an explosion of joy that had suddenly come into her
