Two stories. Three people. All on a journey. One on a life journey, the other on a journey to end a life. One a story of heartbreak, the other a story of a rivalry that is given up for a friendship.
The stories, The story of an hour by Kate Chopin and The Interlopers by Saki both end in the same way. Death. But they don't begin as such. Where one story takes place over the time span of an hour, the other story takes place over many hours.
The first story that we will be looking at is The story of an hour.
In this short story, a woman by the name of Louise Mallard is the main character, a character who has just received some rather dark and shocking news from her sister. Her husband, Brently, has just been killed in the result of a railroad

Other differences within these stories that I had not really seen when reading other compare and contrast essays on these short stories would be that, while Louise stayed in a sunny, cheerful home, as described in the story of an hour: “There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other,” the two men in The Interlopers were weighed down with the dark and stormy woods all around them. Also, while Louise had felt a sense of freedom, Ulrich and Georg had gotten physically, rather than emotionally, trapped by the fallen branch in those very woods.
While both of these stories, The Story of an hour and The Interlopers, have their similarities and their differences, there is one thing that is absolutely certain: Both stories are captivating and they make you want to read them again and again. So I highly recommend that once you are finished reading this essay that you go and read (or re-read) these stories for
Some of the things that are very different about these two stories are the setting. In The Interlopers the setting is outside in the woods on a cold and stormy winter night. In the story of an hour the setting is in an apartment building during a warm sunny spring day. Another thing that is very different between the two stories is the characters in the story The Interlopers the characters are two rough German men who are are disputing over a piece of land. The story of hour however a features a woman in a cozy little apartment with a heart problem. You also see her sister friend and
The Interlopers is a short story and was written by Saki in 1919. The Story of an Hour was written by Kate Chopin in 1894. The Interlopers tell the story of two neighbors trying to hunt each other down. The Story of an Hour is the story of a woman’s feelings in the notice of her husband’s death. Both The Interlopers and The Story of an Hour are two completely different pieces of work. But both stories have similarities and also differences, like the use of irony, character development, and symbolism.
"The Interlopers" an "The story of an hour" are both very eventful short stories. The characters and setting of both stories have big life changing decisions. There is a lot of differences but there is also a lost of similarities.
“The Interlopers” and “The Story of an Hour” both have some similarities and some differences between them. They both start out as completely different stories, but further into the stories, it is easier to find the similarities between the two. The main storylines are nothing alike. The settings of the two are completely different, such as both stories have happiness before they die, which in both stories they do in fact die; and while one deals with physical struggle and the other with emotional, they both contain emotional resolutions. However, they share similarities in terms of use of irony and also the ending of each story.
The main event forshadowed in both stories is their death. In the story of an hour, Louise thinks that she will weep when she sees the tender hands of her husband folded in death (chopin, par. 11). This forshadows to her death when she cries out as she dies. In the same way, the dark cold night forshadows the death of the two characters from the Interlopers. These events were foreshadowed by Louise crying and the dark and cold winter night. The events foreshadowed in these two stories are not likely to have occurred in the reader's
However, rather than primarily following the life events of a man, “Story of an Hour” is a short story that follows, as the title suggests, one hour of a woman's life. The work starts by stating that Mrs. Mallard, the main character of the piece, has a heart condition. Quickly, readers discover a series of events that come after Mrs. Mallard finds out that her husband died in an
“The Story of an Hour” tells a tragic story about a women, who has a heart condition, and receives the news of her husband's passing. At first the woman, Louise, cannot comprehend what she is hearing. She runs up to her room and looks out her window at an image that calms her. She than begins to think of her future without her husband around. She than comes to the conclusion that she is free.
Kate Chopin and Saki are both dramatic authors in these two short stories. “The Interlopers” by Saki, and “The Story of an Hour” by Chopin, are two different stories with only the dramatic ending as a similarity. In this compare and contrast essay, you will be able to clearly see their differences in character, and climax with their ending tying them together.
In the first story, Mrs. Mallard is within the privacy of her home, unlike “The Interlopers” which takes place in the outdoors. “The Interlopers” had a long standing rivalry and wished ill upon each other, while in “The Story of an Hour”, Mrs. Mallard is sad to hear of her husband’s death, even if later she feels it has set her free. The death at the end of the two stories differs as well. In “The Story of an Hour” Louise dies from sadness that her newfound freedom is now taken away, in contrast to “The Interlopers” where the two men die from man eating
You might be wondering why exactly I chose to compare “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Interlopers” by Saki. Although when you first look at them both, you could hardly say they have any comparisons. After all, they’re both about completely different subjects! But when you go a bit deeper, you’ll realize that there actually are a few. The first similarity that I found was that both short stories have two main characters that are both struggling with each other.
At a point in both stories, there was a turning point leading to a more positive future. Mrs. Mallard arose from her chair looking out the window and was filled with glee and full of happiness to finally get to live for herself. While over in The Interlopers as both men laid underneath a fallen tree they decide to move past there family issues and work together to get free and on the path to becoming friends. Now onto the last comparison I have, at the end of both stories the main charaters Mrs. Mallard, Ulrich, and Georg
Thesis statement: The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin has a unique and intelligent concept, but is defeated by lack of story building and a rushed, badly constructed ending. The Interlopers by Saki has a much more basic premise, but uses natural storytelling elements to create seamless story progression and a more powerful message.
The environments of these two stories are opposites. “The Interlopers” is set in a rugged forest in the Carpathian mountains. The atmosphere is cold, dark, and desolate on a “wind-scourged winter night”(Saki). On the other hand “The Story of an Hour” takes place in a large city. The atmosphere is bright and sunny with the trees, “all aquiver with the new spring life”(Chopin). The physical state of the characters in the two stories are also opposites. For most of the time, the characters in
In “The Story of an Hour” we are taken through a journey. The journey is the thoughts and emotions going through Mrs. Mallards (Louise) mind. The journey only takes an hour, so everything moves at a fast pace. Louise seemed to process the news of her husband’s death without an initial element of disbelief and shock. She goes right into the reaction of grieving for her husband. She quickly begins to feel other emotions. At first she does not understand them. The journey is a way that Louise comes to her final thoughts of freedom. She looks into the future and looks forward to living a long life on her own terms.
The focus of the “The Story of an Hour” is on Mrs. Mallard, who is the quaint and seemed to be frail women with a heart condition. Mrs. Mallard is told that her husband was killed in a tragic train accident. As she processes this devastating news, she realizes that she is free from the chains of her marriage. That she can finally be the woman
