How can you determine if a story is good? Every story has good qualities; but, the lesson the story teaches, the author's influence on the reader and the ending determine whether the audience will be satisfied. I believe that the end of every story should have a lesson, a lesson that stays with the reader forever. Let's say a stranger confronts a child and offers him a candy, but the child declines it, Little Red Riding Hood has been read to him and he has accepted that the only way to avoid being in danger is to run away from it. The aftermath of reading a story should not only leave the reader with a lesson but challenge the way the reader views the world. The problem with finding a solution is the author’s ability to withhold it from …show more content…
The moral of a story is the lesson learned, it is what the reader leaves with after they have finished a story. Whether moral is good or bad all stories should have it to give the reader a reason to read it besides entertainment. The story revolves around Elliot and his babysitters who fail to do their job. Although the story illustrates the theme that no one deserves to be alone the lesson is hidden by the abrupt withdrawal of Elliot from Mrs.Sen’s care. The author adds this theme to teach the reader then, later on, draws back by sending Elliot and Mrs.Sen where they began. This turn of event confuses the reader of the reasons behind Lahiri’s story and without clear motive lacks reason of liking the story. Unlike Lahiri’s “Mrs. Sen’s”, “The Third and Final Continent” has morals throughout the story, like everyone goes through struggle, anything can be overcome if you put your mind to it. This story demonstrates to the reader how to overcome their problems and gives them hope that their problems will be solved. The narrator left India in search of a better opportunity for his family with little, he went through poverty to accomplish his goal and loss. The ending of the story is the last thing to consider in this evaluation. The end is as important as the beginning, it catches the reader's attention and satisfies their needs. The perfect ending sums up the story and transports the reader from point a (beginning) to point b (end), it informs the reader of the
What makes a story good? There are many different components that help make a story good, but some are more important than others. Stories may not have these essential pieces, which can make them confusing or harder to understand than stories with these elements. Several stories are better than others because of their plot, characters, and setting.
One day I was ask to transfer Mrs X from bed into wheelchair. Mrs X is paralised so to transfer her a full body hoist is needed. I had to call for help, it wouldn’t be safe to do this by myself. So while I was waiting for the other carer to arrive I have explained to Mrs X what and how we are going to do it. I have also cheked the hoist and battery if its fully charged and operational. I put right size sling on Mrs X with her cooperation. I carefully manovered hoist close to bed, then I hooked sling onto the hoist with short hooks on to of the body and long hooks on bottom. That was when my collegue arrived to help me with transfer. We asked Mrs X if she is ready when she said yes by pushing
Analyse how the ending was used to reinforce one or more ideas in the visual or oral text(s). Note: “Ideas” may refer to character, theme, or setting.
The ending of a novel can be evaluated by the reader in several different ways, however to properly analyze the work is to further explore the logic of how everything has come to be. The ability of the author to show the reader that the ending is reasonable from the preceding action and the character’s nature is what should truly be examined. Not only is the ending of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz both happy and unhappy, it is logical in the sense that it follows logically from the climax of the novel all while the character’s have been constant throughout, except Oscar. Oscar, the protagonist experiences a life-changing transformation that leads to his untimely death. However, the ending is convincing because of this
If you were to read a story, would you pay attention to the beginning or ending? Is there any relevance or significance to the beginning and the ending of a story? Personally if a story is thrilling and exciting, it makes me contemplate about the author's reason to begin and end the story. In the Chrysanthemum’s by John Steinbeck, the story’s beginning and ending significantly impacts the story’s development through the use of literary devices.
Stories ignite a fire within one’s mind, causing their imagination and thoughts to flame with vivid color. Stories are meant to affect the reader, to entertain, to explain, to inspire, and to make the reader experience emotions. All stories, whether they are masterpieces or less than great novels, have particular universal attributes that piece them together, but only specific great works have fundamental characteristics that add fuel to their fires, allowing them to light to their full potential. The impeccable masterpieces of literature use timeless themes and relatable characters to leave ashes scattered within the reader.
A good book according to Jim Menick, a writer for Reader Digest, must have believable and lovable characters, narrative drive, and stories that are entertaining rather than disturbing (Menick). A story’s characters must have depth, and feel real to the reader. If a character seems false, the whole book will. A book has to have a captivating storyline or readers will lose interest, it has to hold their attention; a good story line is the backbone of any good book. Finally, a good book must transport the reader into the world of the story, whether it is a future civilization, a past society, a current civilization, or a
During this semester, I have finished writing three different types of paper, which are summary and response essay, rhetorical analysis essay and argumentative essay. At first, I didn’t have a brief idea of how to write those essays, and I felt confused. However, with the help of professor, and the “They Say I Say” book, I could continue to study and knew what to do with my paper. I still consider writing as a complex task to do, I have to do a lot of preparations before I start, such as searching information on the internet or in the library, having an outline, writing a draft and so on. When I start writing, I have to take care of the grammar, spelling of the words, and add enough figurative language; after I have finished, I should have a works cited page and check again about the grammar and spelling. It is a tiring process to write an essay, but I try my best to enjoy it.
Over the course of the semester, my writing has definitely grown in confidence. Last year my writing seemed full of too many ideas. I was trying to throw in every piece of information I knew about the paper I was writing about. I struggled to get the correct voice out that fit with the information I was trying to present. I feel that the pressure from my Ways of Knowing class to get the perfect thesis, made me struggle through the entire paper to have the perfect evidence, while incorporating fluid sentences. Since then, I feel as though I can take a breath. I can let the words flow from my mind to paper without the cringing of trying to force a perfect paper.
To me, a good story has an interesting plot, complex characters, supporting details, and, of course, proper grammar and spelling. I usually get lost in a good book and can tell that I’m really enjoying a story when I feel I’m in the world the author creates. When I look up, back to reality, I want to return straight away. I always look forward to continuing the story and never want it to end.
Before this course started I didn’t believe I would become a better writer, but to a certain degree, I have. Since taking this course I have been able to grow and learn as a writer, editor, and creative. I have tried to improve particular aspects of my writing such as paying closer attention to my audience. I have learned writing skills and techniques from The Art of Rhetoric which I applied to my writings. In addition, an important and useful skill that I learned from this class was to start writing early. The next assignment was a working draft; it helped me write down all my thoughts and sources I had found and also determine if my focus was valid and in the right direction. After, having the working draft reviewed, the next drafts were
The ending of a story is extremely important due to the fact that it determines whether it is commercial or literary fiction. There are three types of endings that are significant; happy, unhappy, and indeterminate endings. Happy endings are when the protagonist solves their problems with either themselves or someone else. The story would usually end with a “happily ever after.” An unhappy ending is usually more about reality since in real life a happy ending is hard to find. An unhappy ending usually talks about the defeat of humans and their mistakes that they might have which would result in troublesome outcomes. Then the indeterminate endings come into play, which doesn't have a clear result or conclusion. The ending of a story usually determines whether the story is commercial or literary. A story with a happy ending will more than likely fall under commercial since it's ending wouldn’t happen in reality. Unhappy endings would fall under literary seeing as the endings that it contains are something that would happen to people in real life. Indeterminate endings can fall under either commercial or literary due to the fact that its conclusion is unknown. However, it is not always the case where happy endings fall under commercial and unhappy fall under literary fiction, but it is more often for happy endings being commercial and unhappy endings to be literal. The story “Civil Peace” by Chinua Achebe would fall under happy ending, but the story is literary fiction on the
The conclusion is what the reader looks forward to the most in a book and the original ending is definitely the ending that is fit for being “the most important part of a story.” or in this case, Great
5. Conclusion: This is where we see the characters triumph or fail and the following consequences. We might see them return to normality or see the backlash after failing their task. This normally gives the audience a sense of closure and
On June 14, 2017 at 11:00PM, as soon as I arrived in the meeting, one of the 2nd shift member, Phi, handed me the operator awareness of the different way to place pallet on scale at the extruder. Operator awareness came out the same I was trained which was not list anywhere in the work standard. While the meeting continued, I noticed that one of the member looked at me abnormal, upset. I did not pay too much attention to that because I thought it was necessary to find out while everyone was in the building for only one reason which was work. Once meeting finished, I walked to the working area, Extruder, as normal. The work that day remained the same as what I had told my team lead the night before that it was not ready for my shift to start as what supervisor directed. In addition, none of the 2nd shift member returned back to work area. I clearly remember that supervisor, Don Miller, announced in the meeting on June 12, 2017 at 7AM that work schedule had change and the last 30 minutes of each shift should be for everyone to have communication to the next shift or clean. With that reason in my mind, I discussed to my work partner, Mynia, that I have told the team lead about the issue on our work area but I did not see the change. We still have no material ready to load up and they did not mention anything in the meeting. We were both agree to have Mynia went to ask our team lead, Germaine. About 5 minutes later, Germaine walked out from the meeting in order to find me which
