In the novel “I am Legend” by Richard Matheson a strange virus has hit the earth and starts to spread quickly. The virus is converting humans into vampires and it is rapidly moving around the country. This virus has taken over everything just, leaving one man alienated named Robert Neville, whose family was also infected and died. Now Neville’s life consists of him locking himself inside his house nightly to protect himself from the vampire’s attacks. He sits inside pouring himself a countless drink and listening to music, while hearing the vampires outside call his name out. The picture I drew is Neville glancing outside of his window during the night, looking at the vampires that are outside his house. and behind Neville’s house is the entire
In the article, Virus killing Ontario lambs has troubling echoes of Zika, written by Jennifer Yang for The Star, we learn that there is an outbreak of Cache-Valley virus in Canada. The Cache-Valley virus has existed in Canada for a long period of time but new evidence shows that the virus could evolve into something similar to the Zika virus and effect humans too.

Nipah virus, Arena Virus and Francisella tularensis are bioterrorism agents. They work in various ways to harm the host. Francisella tularenis is considered a Tier 1 bioterrorism agent and Nipah virus is an overlap select agent that affects humans and agriculture both. They have been harmful in the past. Though, Nipah virus is a newer virus than the other two. This review will focus on their emergence, pathogenicity and symptoms of the diseases they cause.
I recently read an article written in The NEWYORKER called The Deadliest Virus by Michael Specter. The article talked about the Avian Flu virus, also known as “bird flu”. In the article, Specter interviewed many people, but the most important person, in my opinion, is a virologist who conducted research on the Avian Flu, Ron Fouchier. This article raised many ethical questions. The questions are as followed: Should research be conducted on this virus? Does Fouchier’s research pose a threat? Does the risk of the work outweigh the benefits of the research?
Neville has created a restricted space that fights and defends to keep it for himself. He is an alone white man who tries to survive in an apocalyptic world in which he must learn to adapt himself by controlling the environment surrounding him imposing his authority and establishing his dominance. It is vampire what he must confront and upon whom he must establish his control, they metaphorically are the black population. Neville estimates his own state of humanity against the contaminated monsters with blood as the factor that indicates the difference between the identities of both beings. Neville takes his own blood as the standard to identify what is pure and as a consequence what is human. At some point in the novel, he finds Ruth, a woman of whom he thinks to be a normal human because she can walk in daylight. Although he finally achieves to take her into his house he still does not trust her, being afraid of the fact that Ruth could be infected by the bacillus. After such belief, Neville insists on testing her, first by shoving a plate with crushed garlic on it under her nose, and later by asking her for a sample of blood.
Neville wakes up everyday and fights off vampires if he needs to, and finds tools to try and keep them away from his house. In the book, Neville takes his time to make sure his house is surrounded by garlic and things that the vampires don’t like, and ,made sure this was up everyday to ensure his safety. Regardless of being the last man standing after a plague that took his family, wife and friends, he still managed to fight to keep himself alive. Another example of determination in Neville is him focusing on trying to find out where the plague exactly originates from , how it is spread, and what can he possibly do to try and get close to curing the humans that are infected with the Vampiris germ, the germ that turns humans to vampires. He takes the vampires to try and experiment on them , and bombards himself with medical books to read until he comes up with a theory that adequately describes where the plague originates from, how it spreads, and if there’s any hope for the
The image the vampire is being used in horror movies and novels to portray the fear of disease and infection. For example, in the novel I Am Legend, Richard Matheson states: “The worry had started a few hours before, while Ruth was sleeping. Now, he couldn't rid himself of the fear. No matter how he reasoned, it didn’t help” (126). This quote demonstrates the fear that Robert Neville, the main character, was experiencing. He was afraid that Ruth, the girl he brought home, is infected. The quote shows the fear of losing a companion from Neville while illustrating the general theme which is the horror of contagion. Furthermore, Matheson also states: “He was surrounded now by people, hundreds of them,
Neville understands that these vampires are obsessive about their basic needs as the narrator states, “their need was their only motivation” (Matheson 11). In this regard, Neville is similar to his adversaries as he, too, is obsessed with his needs as a human, specifically for companionship and intimacy. This idea is demonstrated in the beginning of the novel as he is about to slay a sleeping vampire and the author observes, “…but for some affliction he didn’t understand, these people were the same as he” (Matheson 28). Much like Count Dracula, these vampires are driven mad by their thirst and need for blood; however, in Neville’s case, this need can also be characterized by his desire for companionship. In this
Smallpox is a highly contagious infectious disease. The type of microbe for smallpox is the Variola virus. Smallpox is caused by either the Variola major or the Variola Minor. This virus is spread by direct contact. The disease was likely to be in human populations about 10,000 BC. An epidemic broke out in 1519 with the Aztecs and the Conquistadors in Tenochtitlan Mexico. The epidemic killed a total of twenty five percent of the Aztecs population leaving it easy for Cortes and the conquistadors to take over the desired
He kills the vampires that surround his house because they are dangerous, even though his house protects him. He kills off the sub-vampires in their homes because they are better off dead and he is sparing them of their fate. Neville even kills his wife when she comes back as a vampire from her grave. He murders her by stabbing a cross into her heart as an act of mercy, out of necessity. Interestingly, when he finds the infected dog, he does everything in his power to keep him alive. At this point, he is so desperate for companionship that he becomes obsessed with the dog. He also keeps Ben Cortman alive, even though Cortman constantly yells at him and aggravates him. This is likely because he is the only person he has left from the past world. Neville commits assisted suicide when he realizes there are no normal humans left on Earth, as he has become the Other. He looks at "the new people of the earth... [and] he knew he did not belong to them." They are afraid of him; he has become a "terrible scourge even worse than the disease they had come to live with" (95) and "an anathema and black terror to be destroyed"
In the novella I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Robert is the last human on Earth that has been plagued by a disease that turns humans into vampires. This infection has ended with Neville alone in a house to fend and survive, in an undisclosed area of Los Angeles. It is mentioned several times through the novella that bombs could have caused the mutation of a disease and constant sandstorms attribute to the spreading of the infection throughout the areas of Los Angeles. In order to fend off the blood sucking vampires, Neville sets up perimeters of garlic, and mirrors to repel the vampires getting closer to his house. Additionally, Neville installs lights and boards his windows so the vamps can’t get in without a fight. All of his
The poster shows a man in a car with a shadowy presence of Hitler in the passenger seat with the caption, “When you ride alone, you ride with Hitler. Join a car-sharing club today.” In photo number 3, the type of propaganda being used is transfer. Transfer employs the images of famous people to convey a message not necessarily associated with them. Photo 3 utilizes Hitler and his wrongs to persuade people to not ride alone, to not show they are with Hitler, and join a car club when in reality, Hitler does not have any sort of association with riding alone or a car club. Another type of propaganda used in photo 3 is fear. Fear is a technique very popular among political parties and PACs in the United States. It is shown in the photo because
I predicted that Nancy Carlos would be an active group member that is very outgoing. I thought that she would actively contribute to the group’s product and would always be ready to work. I inferred this because she was always clarifying and asking questions about activities we were doing as a team. She seemed motivated and as though she sincerely cared about her grade and the outcome of the group. My predictions proved correct, yet I was unable to predict how essential she would be to the team. She was a hardworking member that was always talking, always working hard, and even took on the roles of opinion provider, questioner, and clarifier. She would involve herself in conversations and would rarely wait for someone to ask her for her opinion.
An invisible organism enters your body. It penetrates into your tissues and then takes over the machinery in your own cells to make more copies of itself. This tiny infiltrator works silently, producing thousands of these clones that fill up the cell and cause it to explode. The clones mercilessly continue the process of invading, taking over and destroying cells. The result might be a minor inconvenience to you as the host, or it could result in a slow or rapid death. It depends only on which variant of this unwanted infiltrator overcomes your body’s defenses. There are cures to wipe out some types of these invisible intruders, but others are so difficult to eradicate or so readily adaptable, that the world’s greatest scientists
Hand, foot, and mouth are parts of human body have the highest change to get contagious infection. There are many viruses but Enterovirus groups, (most common is the coxsackie virus) is the main factor. These viruses can spread through direct contact from person to person especially with those have bad habits such as: unusually washed hands or surfaces contaminated with feces. An infected person’s saliva, stool, or respiratory secretions can transmit the infection.
