Question #1: (250 each part) a) Provide a brief description of the models of HRM discussed in the first chapter of the textbook, and explain how each one related to strategic human resource management.
First there is the Fombrun, Tichy and Devanna model which “emphasizes the fundamental interrelatedness and coherence of HRM activities” (Bratton & Gold, 2012, pg. 18, para. 3). There are four main components consisting of selection, appraisal, development and rewards that attribute to the HRM cycle. This model ignores different stakeholder interests, situational factors and management’s choice, but gives strength to the “coherence of internal HR policies and the importance of ‘matching’ internal HR policies

The weakness of the model however, is that this process of linking HR practices to business output is not developed.
Next is the Storey model, which has four elements: beliefs and assumptions, strategic aspects, role of line managers and key levers. This model suggests that “among all factors of production, it is labour that really distinguishes successful firms from mediocre ones”, (Bratton & Gold, 2012, pg. 25, para. 1) and that employees should be valued as assets and not regarded as costs; nor should employers be seeking employees compliance with rules but more of their commitment and engagement.
Finally, the Ulrich’s Strategic Partner model that presents four key roles that HR professionals must achieve to get the best results. Bratton & Gold quote these key roles as: * Strategic partner – future/strategic focus combined with processes * Change agent – future/strategic focus combined with people * Administrative expert – operational focus combined with process * Employee champion – operational focus combined with people (2012, pg. 25, para.4)
