An Organization uses different types of Strategic Planning models which focus on strategy, planning, implementation and evaluation. However one common model involves the following six steps:
After Harley Davidson identified their SWOT they began the re-structuring process. The restructuring was basically based on “Organizational Change” which is a deliberate attempt to improve organizational performance by changing one or more aspects of the organization, such as its technology, structure or business process.(David Boddy,p.408) Their main focus was on getting back the quality, reducing of manufacturing and production cost, balancing the gap between supply and demand and improving the over all operations. (Nigel Slack 2004, p.476). Harley Davidsons wanted to shift their focus on supply chain because they wanted to reduce purchasing, manufacturing and distribution cost. Previously managing supply chain was not a priority for Harley Davidson instead focuses was to increase production. They decided to engage their suppliers in the manufacturing process as well as involving them in the design and development of their future products. Harley Davidson decided to launch a program called “Top 70 Supplier Program” in 1997 and the purpose was to reduce the number of suppliers so that they can have better communication and coordination with existing suppliers. Under the program Harley Davidson would ask those suppliers to appoint their representatives who would be present on Harley Davidson factory floors to provide their expertise and help in improving quality of products. HD also decided to set up a Supplier Advisory Council (SAC) which would help them to track the performance of the suppliers. SAC focus was on quality improvement and cost reduction on both suppliers and company side. Harley Davidson took further initiative to form an agreement with the suppliers called (MSA) Master Supplier Agreement which would outline the responsibilities and roles of both HD and its suppliers.
