This study of LWOK aimed to identify potential strategies to improve coalition formation practices for facilitating community action and intervention to improve healthy weight in children. Previous studies by a group of authors have explored the successes and challenges of collaborative efforts in promoting active living at the community level. For example, Litt and colleagues (2013) found that investing in community and policy engagement activities represents important levers for achieving structural and policy changes, while Gustat and colleagues (2013) found that the main challenges experienced by collaborative groups were funding and personnel changes. However, the actual processes to forming an effective coalition have not been …show more content…
This represents both a constraint on furthering this critical issue and an opportunity for future work. Collaboration requires that partners place priority on collaborative goals and outcomes, and commitment to actual collaboration presents a significant challenge (Wolff, 2010). Collaboration also requires a willingness to share information and resources, alter activities and enhance the capacity or interests of partners (Himmelman, 2001). The key constructs associated with effective coalition formation include: lead agency selection, staffing and leadership, coalition membership, coalition process and coalition structure (Kegler et al, 2010). Consequently, many of the struggles that the LWOK coalition experienced are highlight the importance of establishing a coalition framework. For example, structural characteristics refer to the administrative rules in place that facilitate the management of the community coalition. The CCAT illustrates that coalitions with structures are more likely to achieve collaborative synergy in the coalition. Researchers have also identified the importance of coalition structures in predicting coalition progress. Butterfoss (2007) notes that the development of structure, rules, and responsibilities early in a coalition’s development enables community coalitions to operate effectively.

The Obesity Policy Coalition has been determined to influence change in policy and regulation to help prevent obesity, particularly in children. Rates of
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity effects more than 9 million children and teenagers between the ages of 6-19 in the United States with another 8 million considered “at risk” of becoming obese. These staggering figures have cause groups to form all across the country and organize their efforts to prevent this disease. One such organization is the Leadership for Healthy Communities, which is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The RWJF holds summits nationwide events calling on policy leaders nationwide to advance healthy eating and active living options in their communities. According to the RWJF, a special emphasis has been placed on collaborative state and community policy approaches that address childhood obesity among vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the epidemic. The RWJF also has a panel, which consists of its chairmen, doctors, lawyers, but more importantly politicians on the state and federal level who are taking childhood obesity head-on and working with organizations like the RWJF to promote healthy, cost effective change in communities nationwide. Arkansas, as well as many other states, has adopted legislation preventing the sale of “fatty foods” within its public schools. Arkansas Act 1220 was adopted and immediately implemented in 2003, creating the state’s first Child Health Advisory Committee, which coordinates
This assignment is a reflective account on what I have learnt on the subject of partnership working in both group meeting and overall learning of the module in Lecture and Seminar, and how this knowledge could be applied to my future practice in health and social care. Partnership working based inter-professional meeting- What I learnt This is a team work exercise that involves interaction between two or more people of different professional disciplines. it involves collaboration, cooperation, pooling of knowledge and profession, effective communication with members involved meeting together on agreed plans, monitoring and evaluation and be able to complete the task according to agreed procedures.
Throughout my lifetime, I have both in my personal and professional life, sought opportunities for collaboration. While serving as a Veterans Representative/Contract Compliance Officer for the N.C State Veterans Home I was required to interact and collaborate with a wide variety of individuals and organizations to include the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veteran and civic organizations, and local hospitals. Since we were co-located at a VHA facility and received, per-diem from VHA, a collaborative approach was essential to solving problems and establishing agreements between the State Veterans Home and VHA. Examples include establishing privacy agreements, parking negotiations, and facility inspections to name a few.
Team BLAZE (Beginning Life with AmaZing Examples) is a project designed to decrease childhood obesity in low income school districts. Team BLAZE is a school based program that incorporates healthy nutritional options along with daily physical activities within a safe learning environment to low income regions in America. The program initially focuses on children ages 5-17 in the rural Mississippi Delta, where obesity rates “far exceed those of the state and nation” (Gamble et al., 2012, p 478). Team BLAZE is modeled after Save the Children’s CHANGE (Creating Healthy, Active and Nurturing Growing-Up Environments) study, a 2-year (2007-2009) randomized, controlled, community and school-based intervention to prevent unhealthy weight gain among rural school aged children (Save the Children, 2008). The CHANGE study used an innovative, multicomponent community-based intervention in rural America to improve the diets of children and proved to be successful in lowering rates of obesity at the studied locations (Save the Children, 2008). Likewise, Team BLAZE uses a multidirectional approach by targeting changes in school nutrition,
Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic and continues to be the focus at the national level (Washington, Reifsnider, Bishop, Ethington, & Ruffin, 2010). Furthermore, many comorbidities and health issues, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and depression are associated with this disease. Hence, combating childhood obesity would involve a collaborative multidisciplinary team consisting of family members, the client, health care providers, and policymakers. Therefore, radical changes need to be implemented into law to combat this issue. As a health care provider, this writer has seen the devastation that childhood obesity has not only on the child, but the family as well and wishes to propose a
Therefore, the prevention of weight gain in an early age should be encouraged. Studies have shown that successful obesity prevention and change in childhood behavior can be accomplished through a combination of population based measures, ranging from the national, state and local levels. This could be accomplished through schools and community based programs ( WHO, 2010). In other words, population based prevention strategies for childhood obesity should support and able to encourage physical activities and healthy diets both in schools and at home. Multiple stake holders should be involved for the effectiveness of this population based prevention strategies. The Strategies encompass the upstream, midstream and down stream sectors. The upstream sector aims to shape the economic, social and physical environments. The midstream aims at lifestyle changes and behavior, thereby reduction in energy consumption and increase in physical activities. On the other, the down stream sector aims at supporting the health services and clinical interventions. Appropriate setting for the prevention of childhood obesity include, after school programs in schools, clinical settings, homes and communities. Such prevention programs should also ensure that those vulnerable children such as the less privileged and disabled are taken into

Coalitions are extremely important in American society and often consist of numerous alliances between groups with the purpose of
Collaborative partnerships is important because it consent of learning and developing training. Partnership is important because it assist with assessments such as: adoptions, evaluation, termination, expansion, maintenances, formalizations and migration (Novick et.al, 2008,p.118). There is always room for change and growth in public health organization.
Strengthening community action is instrumental in establishing positive health outcomes in young people. In strengthening community action, various support networks are put into place to not only prevent
Nutrition and weight status is a vitally important issue as obesity is on the rise in the United States. One third of children in this country ages 2-19 are either overweight or obese and this potentially sets them up to develop diabetes and other comorbidities during their lifetime (U.S. Task Force, 2010). It is important to promote health by way of consumption of healthy foods, getting adequate exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight and body image. The Let’s Move initiative, founded by First Lady Michelle Obama, approaches the obesity epidemic at a grassroots level and encourages children to eat healthy, get active and take actions towards a healthy lifestyle ("Let’s Move," n.d.).
The Department of Homeland Security released the 2014 Quadrennial Homeland Security Review on June 18, 2014 as required by the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and its amendments. This review outlined the current state of preparedness, as well as the future areas of concentration. It also determined six strategic challenges facing the nation: terrorist threat; growing cyber threats; biological concerns as a whole; nuclear terrorism; transnational criminal organizations; and natural hazards. The basic building block of emergency management in the U.S. is the local community. Each step begins here. Threat assessments are completed on the local level. Planning, mitigation, and response are all responsibilities of the local community to support the state and Federal practice using the guidance provided by both.
In today’s society Community Policing and problem solving is what is needed to keep criminal activity under control. Due to ineffective policing methods crime has continued to be on a rise. Police organizations have learned over the years that getting the community involved in fighting crimes, makes the members of the community feel much safer and gives them some sense of pride in regards to the community they live in. This paper will discuss how much of an impact community policing and problem solving has had between law enforcement and the community in which they serve. This paper will also address solutions more communities are using to help control the access to these different drugs.
