Street and documentary photography captures a subject or situation in a candid moment. The theme of the images can be broad. A portrait of a begging homeless child on a city street to a man walking his dog in an inner city park can remain under the umbrella of street and documentary photography as the photographer is capturing an honest reflection of that particular environment.
The introduction of portable cameras has made it feasible for anyone with basic knowledge of how to use a camera to now go out and record what they see. However, what one chooses to photograph is still a reflection on them as well as well as the scenes they witness.

Street photography is a branch of documentary photography, but instead demonstrates the photographer's vision of the world as opposed to an explicit social agenda. For example, documentary photography can record all works of life but the majority are often dedicated to showing the life of underprivileged or disadvantaged people to highlight the social injustice.
Recording this genre of society goes back to the early 19th century. "Photographs Of The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow, 1868-77", was a documentation of the slum areas in Glasgow.
Another example is "Street Life in London", published in 1877, which documented how the advanced stages of industrialization in the 19th century impacted on social life. In 1936 socially committed photographer, Bill Brandt, published the illustrated book "The English at Home", in which he portrayed the English class society and how the Great Depression had affected them. In the mid-1930s such invasive photography was rare and the unsettling social questions raised by Brandt's photographs were then rarely discussed. However, subsequently Brandt was commissioned by the Ministry of Information to photograph life in the London Underground bomb shelters during the Blitz.
His uncompromising eye for detail made Brandt one of Britain's most influential and internationally admired photographers of the 20th century. Through
Certain mile stones in taking pictures during the first two decades of photography were marked by rapid commercialization and many photographers bowed to the commerciality and uninspired demands of their customers, however there were those who were separating themselves from the bustling photographic factories and portrait studios and instead immersed themselves into a new class of “artist” by using the camera to express creative photographic visions. Whether it was used in society, documentation, or art the camera was obviously used, and are used to this day.
Documentary is a genre that has the ability to provide visual evidence of reality by means of filmic treatment of actuality. Intrinsically linked to the notion of ‘truth’, it relies on the mechanical capability of the camera to capture an image of likeness. In a dynamic and flexible genre, the possibilities are endless and as such, are constantly being redefined. Advances in technological factors have driven the genre’s complexity, expanding boundaries and allowing filmmakers the opportunity to create more precise and accurate visual representations of reality.
I believe that Activist photography is about using your camera as a tool in order to change the world, by using this you can capture photographic images to advocate for social and environmental awareness. Drug use, prostitution, pollution can be looked at, or problems that are further a field such as famine, war, and the plight of refugees and migrant workers. One recognised example of an activist photographer would be landscape photographer Ansell Adams, who came to Washington with stunning images of the American West to support protecting these areas. His images and testimony were

In every country you have to face different laws when it comes to candid street photography. Because of the fact that I’m a based in Vienna
Documentary photography is redefined as a form of photography that is used to capture every moment as it happens in order to express a message of what is occurring around the world (“Documentary Photography,” n.d.). Photographers who focus on documenting capture photographs that attracts public attention and tells stories of situations that happen in our daily lives (“Documentary Photography,” n.d.). I have always found interesting documentary photographers because they are able to tell a story with a click of a button. Of course it is more than just pressing the shutter button, it's about being able to use light, the limitation of space, location, and composition to capture the most possible in order to express emotion and capture a visual
What are some of the ways that photographers are doing street photography without upsetting people?
“Photography is a word derived from the Greek words photos (‘light’) and graphein (‘to draw’) The word was first used by the scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839. It is a method of recording images by the action of light, or related radiation, on a sensitive material” (Bellis 1). Photography has been around for quite a few years. It has evolved from a pinhole camera, to a flexible film camera, and now to digital cameras, but it is slowly being replaced by cellphones and isn’t pursued by as many people. Most cameras now are all digital because technology has increased so rapidly. I remember when I was nine years old, my grandma bought me a travel film camera. I still have the film to this day. Memories like that can last a
The “American photography” was part of a series documentary books that were developed in America’s photography. The photographs show records of America’s reality during the 1930’s. The book was a refreshment on history cultural emblems such as war, patriotism, and racism. The very first ever one-man exhibition was held. Technically this was Walker’s second exhibition because, in 1933, 39 of his photographs were displayed at the Museum of modern art. These photo images were seen as architectural photos. Walker worked by night at Wall Street and this gave him the opportunity to be a photography by day. Walker is known for his street photography.
Photography is commencing to wind up as the world 's most popular pastime. Because photographs surround us, we are able to utilize photography to explore the world. Susan Sontag, author of On Photography, has an alternate point of view on photography. When Sontag implies that photography lets us know how we think about the world, we acknowledge it as the camera records it; this is essentially what photography is all about, but it involves the photographer 's view utilizing a camera to record both a physical reality and an internal reality. Sontag 's claim that photography constrains our comprehension of the world is a great observation; conversely, today’s current photograph manipulation makes it difficult to see what reality truly is.
A documentary is an art form pulling away from a film as it tries to create the illusion of reality by becoming non-fiction. Film creates a great sense of escape but documentaries create a sense of realism. The history of documentary began quite basic by just facing the mirror towards nature. But as the years prolonged; ideologies, societies and controversies arose and documentary-makers decided to block certain parts of the mirror to show what they want you to see, “the truth”.
Documentary photography conveys a larger sense of the subject through an almost poetic presentation of unexpected details and fleeting expressions. This trend has seemingly gone hand-in-hand with the shift toward photographers, photo editors, and the general public embracing the subjective nature of documentary photography. (Module 10
Whether having posted a picture of their dog or a delicious meal, nearly everyone today has some experience in photography. However, despite the increasing ease and ever-growing quantity of photography, there remains distinctive line between a Facebook snapshot and true photo. While most will point to professionals with expensive equipment and years of training as the obvious difference, truthfully, photography does not require any of those traits. In fact, many modern photographers even make a living using smart phone cameras and social media, so how exactly do they bridge this gap into “real” photography? As it turns out, the major distinguishing factor lies not in the subject matter or equipment, but in the effort and thought poured in behind
Both these types of photography mostly have women as their subjects. The concept of such photography has to be sensuous and attractive. Thus the photographer has to choose and select everything accordingly. The models posing for the photographer can either be fully clothed or semi nude as this art of photography is very suggestive in nature and stops short of being explicit.
