Poetry is used to evoke a response from the reader, whether it be emotional or physical. The poet is using the poetry to express his/her emotions or to explain an event that happened in their life, which triggers the specific emotions in the reader due to the reader being able to relate to the poet’s experience, which can leave a lasting effect on the reader that the reader can associate with. Poetry is also able to convey a theme in a unique way that differs from other genres, while also being able to explain its theme by using different elements with a short amount of writing.
The two strengths that poetry utilizes to show its importance as a genre is connecting with readers through emotion and using various elements to indicate the theme. The first strength of poetry as a genre is its ability to connect with the reader through their emotions as well as the reader’s experiences and values. People are able to relate with the descriptions in the poems by connecting the descriptions to their own personal experiences and memories, which makes the overall impact of the poem stronger for the readers. This quote from the excerpt, Evaluating Poetry, “Evaluating poems can be, among other things, a way to learn about yourself, for what you like in poetry says a lot about where your values lie” (p. 508), helps to demonstrate that poetry is able to connect with people’s values, which helps to show how people are able connect on a deeper level with the poets and their poetry. The
Language is a remarkable thing. It can convey every thought, feeling, and emotion with perfect accuracy. Almost exclusively, language has taken awkward, unfit animals out of nature and made them rulers over the earth and many of its elements. When used well, it has the power to change an individual's view of the world, make someone believe they have seen something they have not, and even more astonishingly, look inside one's self and see what exists. If language is mixed with the tempo of music, something new arises; poetry is born. When words and ideas are set to a beat, they can far more subtly convey concepts that would otherwise need to be explicitly stated and the poem can be appreciated more as a whole,
A poet hopes that people would appreciate their poem in a way that it is not mistreating the work’s value. In the poem “Introduction to poetry” Billy Collins describes his desires on how students should connect with poems. Collins states that students try to force out meanings out of poems instead of diving in to understand its true nature. The author creates a sensitive yet aggressive tone to convey two ways of poetry appreciation through his use of diction, personification and metaphor.
It is argued that poetry is boring, it is sometimes described as a useless topic that should burn in hell. But whoever thinks that haven’t seen the purpose of poetry. Poetry is believed the best medium to express emotions especially sorrow. Adversity is one of the hardest and sometimes the most sorrowful emotions that exist. This makes adversity the perfect topic of a poem. Poetry it is a compelling way for people to communicate about overcoming difficult life circumstances. I will use two poems to prove this, ‘The rose that grew from the concrete’ by Tupac Shakur and “The Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou.
Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Two famous poets come to mind to anybody who has ever been in an English class, Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings. Both of these poets have had numerous famous pieces due to the fact that they both
Poetry has a role in society, not only to serve as part of the aesthetics or of the arts. It also gives us a view of what the society is in the context of when it was written and what the author is trying to express through words. The words as a tool in poetry may seem ordinary when used in ordinary circumstance. Yet, these words can hold more emotion and thought, however brief it was presented.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by
Looking around on an average day, things seem very basic and plain, but by investing your time into reading such works as poetry, we are able to dive deeper into the atmosphere around us. Christopher Hart, writing "Drunk on Words: Why You Should Read Poetry Daily, explained how "Poetry, at its very best, inserts an image into your mind which becomes un-banishable, un-impeachable. It gives you new ways to experience the world and express your thoughts". The mud seems to be wiped away from our eyes and the world that is filled with color, is now filled with words and
Every thought that a human being has is flooded with emotion. An emotion is a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others. You can’t simply think without pulling your emotions into your thought process. There are four basic emotions with hundreds of sub emotions that come off of them. Humans are hardwired to feel every single one of those emotions. They are coursing through our brain every moment. Poetry is little lines of pure emotion. When a reader reads and understands these lines, it is like peering into the author's soul.
People are drawn to poetry because it uses words to express emotions that most people
A well-written poem would help one to engage into the work with their senses. One should be able to ask themselves what the poem caused them to think, hear, see, feel, taste, and to determine what he or she learned from the poet’s words. Many people believe that because poetry is an enigmatic art, and that there is no way for sure to know the
Poetry is the art of minimal story telling, often containing hidden or abstract ideas as the theme. Theme in other types of literature tends to be more distinct and clear cut, a theme tell the lesson or point of a book, story, or movie. In poetry however, it can be necessary to read three or four times over to merely understand the “point” of the poem. While poems are much shorter than other literary forms, it can require the most thought and probe your mind for alternative perceptions.
poem is not merely a static, decorative creation, but that it is an act of communication between the poet and
Poetry is a varied art form. Poetry is expression with words, using aesthetics and definition. Word choice in poetry is the single most important thing. Devices such as assonance, alliteration and rhythm work in a poem to convey a certain image or to facilitate understanding. Similes and metaphors can take two unlike objects, such as a potato and cinderblock, and if done the correct way use them to describe how Abraham Lincoln dealt with scoundrels. Poetry is beautiful. One of the best genres in poetry, let alone a great literary movement is Romanticism or the post-enlightenment Romantics.
Poetry allows the writer, the reader and even those listening to get a deeper sense of being. It gives us the opportunity to break free from simple and boring routine. If done correctly a poem will done correctly a poem will be able to stir emotion, and create wonder. In order to this however all the part that make up a poem must be in sync. Its tone, diction, imaginary, rhythm, symbolism and subject matter are all critical areas. A good poem will draw an emotional reaction from its audience, whether those are light and upbeat or darker more serious feelings they will come away with a new experience, changed by what they just experienced. Two such poems that embody what a good poem should be are “Lady Lazarus” by Sylvia Plath and “Harlem”, also published as “Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes. These poems elevate the experience for reading, listening and writing poetry, and serve as an excellent reference for a poem should be.
Poetry is literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm, poems collectively or as a genre of literature.
