Introduction “I will be so glad when this semester is over because school is stressing me to the max.” This is a quote that quite a few college students are familiar with and have probably said themselves. College can be a fun but also stressful time for students. They are focused on making sure they attend class and get passing grades so they can be successful and hopefully succeed in the next chapter of their life. Researchers at Columbia University and the University of San Diego conducted a study conducted a study to determine how stress negatively affects academic performance and enrollment. In the article students also reported the cramped housing and lack of healthy food choices caused stress as well. (College Student Report Stress Affects Academic Performance, 2011). The next source used for the paper was an article that came from New York University and it gave the key facts when it comes to college student experiencing stress. Some of the key facts included college student reporting being more stressed out than ever before and stress being the number one impediment to academic performance and 55% of students, nationally claimed their biggest stressor to be academic in nature. (Stress, 2009). A survey at Villanova University was conducted for the article and the results of the survey included 70% of undergraduates experienced stress. Also for one-fourth respondents, stress adversely affected academic performance (Top Impediments to Academic Success) (n.d.). The purpose of this study is to show how college student stress levels can impact their academic achievement in a negative way. The relevance this could have to social work is that it could show how high levels of stress can negatively impact college student’s academic performance. The information found in this study could show social workers that too much stress can be bad especially if a student comes to them asking for help
