Many first year college students face problems as they enter a new educational environment that is very different than that of high school. However, the common problem is that many first year students become stressed. For many students, college is supposed to be the most fun time of their life; however, their fun can be restricted if it is limited by stress and other mental illnesses. According to the National Health Ministries (2006), stress is caused by “greater academic demands,” the feeling of being independent from family, “financial responsibility,” homesickness, being exposed to meeting new people, peer pressure, “awareness of one’s own sexual identity,” and the abuse of drugs and alcohol (p. 2). In addition, researchers have found that some mental diseases are “traced to trauma,” which comes from the stress that the people with those diseases had in their college time (National Health Ministries 2006, p. 2). Furthermore, at the national view, there is a large portion of the college student body experiencing sadness and pessimism (National Health Ministries 2006). Also, anxiety and eating disorders have affected more female students than male students, and the number of college students who have these disorders has increased beginning the 1950s (National Health Ministries 2006). Moreover, committing suicide is another negative outcome of consistent stress, and it is considered to be “the second leading cause of death” in college students (National Health Ministries 2006, p. 2). In order to reduce the number of college students who die because of committing suicide or have mental illnesses due to stress, college students, especially first year students, should learn more about the causes of stress and how to handle it. If college students know how to fight against stress, the number of students who drop out of college will decrease, and colleges will have more students graduating with a bachelor’s degree.
