Great leadership overcomes the status quo by taking risks. However, it slowly moves the group through a series of small steps designed by the leader to encourage participation and build feelings of success. To continually inspire and encourage their followers, leaders must be able to break a large task into small components. This builds self confidence and a culture of active learning and hardy determination. To build this hardy resilience leaders anticipate setbacks and develop the ability to learn from them. Leaders will also teach their followers to learn from adversity and
Kelly McGonigal discusses the importance of viewing stress as positive, as opposed to negative, by detailing three specific studies and findings about stress. In the first study, it was discovered that people with a significant amount of stress had a higher mortality rate; however, this was only statistically significant if the subject viewed stress as harmful. If the overly-stressed subject didn’t view stress as harmful, they were actually at the lowest risk of dying, even compared to those with a minimal amount. Therefore, it is important to change a person’s perspective of stress. In particular, McGonigal emphasizes that stress is important for a person’s body: it energizes and prepares them to meet whatever challenge they are facing. Furthermore, it helps the blood vessels remain relaxed, thereby allowing the heart to remain healthy.
When people think about stress they think mainly how the situation is going to make them feel bad about something or themselves. A lot of people get headaches and dizziness and other health issues related to stress. Before reading this book, I knew that stress had a negative impact to my health and that there was nothing I could do about it. But after reading the first chapter I realize that stress can be a good thing and that you need stress in order to be motivated more to do things. In McGonigal’s book she talks about two different mindsets the mindset that stress is harmful and then the mindset that stress can be enhancing or can be rewarding. Personally, after reading these mindsets I can see that there are a lot of people that have the months that there's trash is harmful because of all the health issues that people are going through this is our passion that has risen and even the Obesity that has risen can be related to stress. I feel like maybe students and adults should read this book because she talks about the three steps that can help stress be reduced and in everyday life there are people that really need that in order to be healthier and happier.
The development of my leadership can be attributed to my roles in group projects throughout school and also my job as a manager at Walgreens. I have learned that groups don’t always function properly and in certain instances there needs to be a push in the right direction for some members of the group. I try to lead the group by motivating other members and sometimes threatening them with a punishment because of their own lack of effort towards our common goal. My role as a manger at work has also shaped my leadership capacities by making me in charge of the store and the people working. When it comes to adversity I don’t think that I have faced much in my lifetime. Being compared to the adversity that other people have faced in their lives the things I have overcome are minor and not necessarily life changing events. One person that I admire is Lauren Conrad, who is a self made fashion designer with a great character and moral compass. She is from Hollywood but he is a good genuine person despite her surroundings and she is an inspiration to me other young women around the globe.
Psychological stress is a result of many factors and should be dealt with very carefully. Stress can be defined as “An excess of demand made upon the adaptive capabilities of the mind and body”.(Joseph 1). Another way of putting it, is that there are some things that put certain demands on us. The effects of stress should not be limited to unpleasant emotional states. Many studies have concluded that the effects on our physical health from stress can be extremely detrimental. These adverse physical effects include heart disease and formations of cancer. There are also some societal issues that psychological stress can hamper.
Stress is part of our everyday life and not all stress is negative. It affects everyone and no one is excluded but I have extra hard time managing my stress. I get stressed over being a full-time student because I work full-time as well. When you are trying to succeed in school but also have to support your family, it becomes hard to manage. I don’t get enough time to study for a test and complete my assignments. This is a problem because I set a high expectation for myself and any work I do can’t be less than my best. It doesn’t help that my brain overthinks everything but it has its uses. I would stay awake at night because of the overall stress at work and school. In addition, I often contemplate humanities future and what
Challenges in the life of a leader are many. These are storms we must face to rise to greater heights. We must be leaders rising to higher altitude as we take the challenges on in meekness. Do not be afraid but be in prayer and never run way from it. Handling
Throughout life stress is a common problem whether it’s at work, school or home. Therefore, all individuals have different views of stress and various ways of handling it or otherwise managing their stress. Dees (2013) noted that leaders are all at war, whether on the battlefront, where opponents and opposing ideas meet, or home front, whether in the boardroom or in the classroom. The tribulation is not just from the enemies it is also from the friendlies. A leader faces or carries not only his own battles and burdens, but also of the battles and burdens of those under his or her leadership. The greatest challenge of leadership is, even when the vision is clearly defined and strong and the leader is optimistic, the ones being led have goals that do not align with the goals espoused by the organization. (Nehring & Lohmeier, 2010). A leader should expect tribulation, and lead with excellence through the realities of success and failure. Therefore, an effective leaders have to put on the armor of god and be prepared for the future traumas of life because there will be tribulation. (Dees, 2013). Leadership truly is a contact sport because a good leader endures tribulations, and at times makes sacrifices to benefit the organization while filtering his or her way through diverse situations.
At one time or another, most people experience stress. The term stress has been used to describe a variety of negative feelings and reactions that accompany threatening or challenging situations. However, not all stress reactions are negative. A certain amount of stress is actually necessary for survival. For example, birth is one of the most stressful experiences of life. The high level of hormones released during birth, which are also involved in the stress response, are believed to prepare the newborn infant for adaptation to the challenges of life outside the womb. These biological responses to stress make the newborn more alert promoting the bonding process and, by extension, the child's physical survival.
I will be discussing 3 specific personal strategies that I will use to improve stress and time management.
Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing surroundings. It has physical and emotional effects on us and can make good or bad feelings. As a good influence, stress can help motivate us to do something, or help us through the day. As a bad influence, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression (overall, make you feel really crappy), which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomachs, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. With the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a job promotion (or demotion), or a new relationship, we experience stress as we change our lives to cater to
Stress is part of our lives. We live with it, deal with it, and above all worry about it. Our way of life, the area in which we live, the economy, and our jobs can cause a great deal of stress. Not everyone deals with the same level of stress and there are several factors that can impact our lives and cause us to have higher or lower stress levels. We can have stress caused by Cataclysmic events which according to Feldman (2009) are events that can affect many people at the same time and are “disasters such as tornado and plane crashes, as well as terrorist attacks”. (p418). Other factors are personal stressors and can be caused by events such as a divorce, death or a loved one or the loss of a job. (Feldman, 2009). The
This brief essay will discuss my personal handling of a stressful situation I endured and how I coped. My husband enrolled in college to pursue his undergraduate degree in 2014. I also took care of my father and children. This caused a great deal of stress to our family and in particularly stress in my life. Stress can be healthy, sometimes stress can even teach a life lesson. The way in which someone handles a stressful situation can also reflect their character.
