It is essential to establish respectful and professional relationships with children and young people in the role of Teaching Assistant. There are certain strategies which enable such a valued and trusted relationship be established. A relationship in which a child trusts and respects their TA and feels comfortable in their company, allows the TA to offer a supportive and caring environment in which the child can learn and develop.
In the first parent-teacher conflict scenario, a mother storms into her son’s classroom and demands if the teacher there is the one she is looking for. After his affirmation, she begins to vent her frustrations about an assignment that made her child bring a homeless man into her home. It is not long before the teacher cuts the parent off and condescendingly informs her he has no idea what she is talking about or who she is. As the mother angrily tells him it is about an assignment he gave her child, the teacher immediately jumps to the defensive. The teacher berates her communication with her child, uses sarcasm when explaining the assignment he gave out and the intent behind it, and made it known that he was not taking her concerns seriously as he suggested she put her complaints in a suggestion box.
Teaching, according to the Teacher’s Training Agency, “…is a job for those who like and respect young people” (2005). Andrew clearly from his responses, suffered during his schooling, and perhaps felt disrespected as a result of being labelled. His position as an educator a number of years later, enable him to look quite critically upon his educators, almost, one could argue with an expert eye.
The teachers profiled in “Unforgettable Miss Bessie”, “My Favorite Teacher”, and “And the Orchestra Played On” are remembered and admired by the narrators. Miss Bessie, Miss Hattie, and Mr. K. possessed significant qualities that made them remarkable educators. They inspired and encouraged students. They only wanted the best for their students and prepared them for their futures, enabling them to overcome difficulties in school. Besides the content of their subject matter these educators their taught students to believe that their lives and future all depends from themselves: whether they would choose the clean asphalt road or dirty, bumpy one.
I see relationships as being integral and ensure that there is open communication with whanau, tamariki and the teaching team. I am sensitive to each child’s needs and build reciprocal relationships that enhance learning outcomes. I take time to actively listen to children and have rich conversations that challenge children’s thinking.
Relationships are key important links in most professions, constructing relationships in many areas, the teacher may request assistance, offer advice and recommendations to colleagues, learners and other persons to ensure those involved obtain the appropriate information and performance to give the best opportunities
A part of my job as administrator is to work with students on keeping ethical standards throughout their lives. I work with others at my school to instill character building skills. We have a character word for the month that is posted in every classroom and other parts of the school. Part of my job as an administrator will be to work with teachers and how they relate to the students. During my Successful School Observation I was able to pick up on the teachers’ attitudes about teaching with the way they spoke to the students and about the students. Most of the teachers were working really well with the students. There were two or three who, if I was their administrator, would be placed on probation or written up because of the way they talk to the students. Belittling students is a big NO! NO! All students deserve to be treated with respect even on our worst days as
needs are met and they feel as if they are respected by the teacher. Mutual respect is once again
He was a humble guy coming in and was very interactive with students. His traits helped him earn the respect of many students. Out of the eight questions we had to ask, I only brought up the strongest ones to ask him. The first question I had asked him was, "What were your teaching methods during your first semester of your career?” He responded saying, “I wanted to make it enjoyable and relate the class subject to real life situations so students have an understanding of how important the topic is during my teaching points.” My second question was, “How did you approach your kids when they did not turn their work on time or when they were noisy during your lectures?” He said, “Students will be students mainly misbehave, because complications, and they probably won’t even do any classwork. However, as a teacher when dealing with a misbehaved student you have to take them outside and have a word with them or just not have them participate in any extracurricular activities”. The third question I asked was, “how did you interact with your students? Did you focus on strengths or weaknesses when speaking to them individually? He replied, “When interacting with students, I mainly place my mindset within their level. I don’t make it seem like I’m a higher individual with authority. I feel as if it creates a closer bond when you make them feel they’re confronted with someone similar to them. It is best
In the classroom the children are putting their final touches to the building project. Every child had a specific job for the project. It was in between being a plumber, electrician, painter, and carpenter. I was instructed to create a file that had a child picture and dialogue. The following day we were brought into the William Paterson campus. The environment and the professors were very welcoming. We first went into a meeting that involved teacher discussions. The question was “What Schools should focus on.” A lot of teachers had great topics to discuss such as “How could we find money for schools?” I took the advantage to ask a question as well “How could we involve technology in classrooms for the new generation.” This was a topic that I truly was interested in since we talked about it a lot in
Within this scenario, Mark is a pre-service teacher that aspires to make an impact on his students’ lives. On this note, Mark builds a connection with a reclusive student named Laurel. This sparks controversy amongst the school community as Laurel insists that Mark is her ‘friend’ and begins to share inappropriate information with him. With good intentions, Mark does not want to diminish Laurel’s newfound confidence. Conversely, Mark is unsure of his professional responsibilities in this situation.
In the past, we have seen numerous cases of teachers having more than professional relationships with students in the past. Whether or not the student is okay with this kind of involvement with older teachers, it is completely inappropriate and is something that needs to be
Teaching is 24/7, 365 day professions were teachers prepare to educate and help student to proceed in life. However, there are some teachers who take the 24/7 and 365-day work schedule in a different manner. Parents expect teachers to do their jobs in an ethical manner and hopefully have the best interest of their child in mind. But there are many situations were teachers not only let their students down but also the adults who leave their children in their care. A teacher’s job is to shape the mind of young adults through education but not sexual contact between one another. I hate when one teachers makes a mistake which causes us to look at all teachers. There are some teachers who build productive relationships with their student and
The first question asked, as a baseline and to center what to expect going forward, was: how do you think about relationships and discipline as aspects of classroom culture. Mr. Carey began, as he often does, fairly short as if he is not clear what is being asked. He begins by stating that it helps, then quickly follows up be adding that compliance comes a lot easier if you have a relationship with the
Eva- she was a girl revolted with the things that happened in her life, at first she did not like the teacher, but over time she came to see that the teacher only wanted the good of everyone, she went through many difficulties, she got caught in the street, saw a man dying in front of her, and then she rebelled about things.
