The purpose of this study was to examine if student employment only negatively affects GPA when the student works a certain amount of hours. Researchers also wanted to determine if work and school contributes to low social time and higher job-stress. Finally, the researchers attempted to find out if high-achieving students who are employed are more organized and attentive to their school work. Results indicated that working student’s either have the same or even slightly higher GPA’s than non-working students. Student’s who work between 10-19 hours a week saw a benefit to their GPA, while those who worked 20 or more hours and those working less than 10 hours were more likely to have lower a GPA’s than those working 10-19 hours per week. The
Everyone has thought about getting a job, even if they do not have one, and the argument of whether or not teenagers should get jobs or not, is a very controversial issue. The biggest issue people see with teenagers getting jobs is that it will affect grades and participation at school, which can be true, but the key to anything is to make sure that it is done in moderation. Obviously it is true that if there is a teenager trying to work five days a week, and balance school, they will most likely struggle in school. This is especially true if they work long hours. On the other hand, if they only work for three days a week, and only a few hours each day, they can get the benefits of having a job as a teenager, and still be able to focus in school. Experts even say that having a summer job can help prevent the “educational backsliding that happens between school years for high school students” (Belsner 1), which is something that many students struggle with, because unless students study over the summer, they usually forget some of the things they learned the year
The famous president, Franklin D. Roosevelt , once stated "Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds." (Leuchtenburg 16). As one of the best known presidents, and as some might argue, one of the wisest presidents, his decisions and legacy continue to impact the life in America today. Born in Hyde Park, New York on January 30, 1882 to a wealthy and prominent family, he lived a life filled to the brim with luxury. He was, however diagnosed with polio in 1921. As the only president to be elected as president for four separate terms, he served from 1933 to 1945. He could not, however complete his fourth term, for he passed away on April 12, 1945 of cerebral hemorrhage. As a child, he attended the Groton School of Boys, which prepared him for the incredibly prestigious, Harvard University.
Next, teenagers are constantly running here and there, trying to keep up with their schedules. From school, church activities, work, sports, friends, family, and any other sort of time consuming plans, they’re exhausted. A study done in 2014 showed that over 22% of high school students work a part-time job. They’ve also seen that working more than 15-20 hours per week, can affect their academic performance. Plus teenagers
In the article Teenagers’ Work Can Have Downsides”by Jerald G Bachman describe how teens who are in high school that have jobs developed poor academic performances “ they're more likely to be involved in a variety of problems ” Jerald began the “Monitoring the Future “ project that monitored teens in high school and from college who had jobs and discovered a drop in the high school teens academics and made connections between long hours and problems behaviors are symptoms of issue like poor adjustments to school and greater interest in short term gratification .They encouraged for student to follow what they call a sweet spot a job that requires relatively few hours per week during the school year fewer hours the better.Student that have
Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get
Life at school is just as difficult as life at home. Sometimes the professor won’t give make up work or extensions, even though the student has a valid excuse. He or she could have been working, or be at a doctor appointment, etc. life between these two worlds can affect the student in many ways. For example, when a first generation college student is working to help or support his or her family, he or she is more focused on that than on
Darolia (2013) places itself in a theoretical context which concerns the link between time use and student outcomes. Darolia notes that students have a fixed amount of time to accomplish various tasks (e.g., academic work, extracurriculars, and social activities). Working while in school further limits a student’s time constraint; as a consequence, work-study can injure the quality of those aforementioned activities. In order to ground his point, Darolia cites the work of Kalenkoski and Pabilonia (2010) which asserts that work has a negative impact on first-semester GPA for full and part-time college students. However, Darolia notes that work can positively affect student outcomes, because work encourages students to engage in better time-management practices. He does not directly support this in his paper; but, he cites a study which asserts a positive association between FWS and credit completion (another indicator of student
I have two grades in the fall of 2014 that hurt my GPA. Although, I feel like I understood the material and was able to deliver answers in both of the courses, the grades did not account for the amount of material I retained or for my work ethic in these courses. My low grades in those two courses, pushed me to work harder the following semester and achieve a 4.0. As for the MCAT portion of my application, I feel that my psychology and sociology scores are low and that this hurts my overall percentile. Due to the timing of my internship in Germany, I had to take the April 17th exam date. This was the first time this section of the MCAT was administered, and I believe that the study supplements were not complete and that there was a lack of
The average age of a community college is 29, and more than 60% of the students attend part time. Since 1985, more than 50% community college have been women. Most students are adults and many of them have married and have kids, they have to take care of their family, go to work and at the same time attend school. It takes a lot of time and effort to take care of their family, so it is difficult for them to focus on school. According to study, 60% of community students work 20 hours per week, and 25% of them work 35 or more hours per week. 23% of the students have dependent children. On the other hand, the majority of Black and Hispanic low income students study at Community College, they suffer from the family financial issue, and short of family support. The multitasking students have family responsibility, which cause their time limitation, lack of sleep, social demand. One single mother shared her stress : “…my two-year-old ‘s schedule conflicting with my schedule, the fact that I have 12 [credit] hours in the summer, trying to hang out with my friends but screwing up my other obligations, and I have to still go through family court..” Compare to other students, this group of people who care of their families have more limit time to study. According to American College Health Association (2006), some participants who feel overwhelmed said: “It’s anything that may cause you to worry. And for me it’s like not
The purpose of the study conducted was to understand the use of sunscreen amongst children in fourth grade using the theory of reasoned action and planned behavior. (Martin, Jacobsen, Lucas, Branch, & Ferron, 1999) The authors hypothesized that attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control would be associated with intentions to use sunscreen and as a result, would translate to actual sunscreen use. (Martin et al., 1999)
This is very important for students' lives after high school. For instance, as I mentioned before, I started to work when I had sixteen years old. That helped me to get about five thousand dollars from my work. And, that enabled me after the graduation from the high school to live alone in a small dorm on Phoenix campus university. So, I used my saved money to pay my tuition of studying in university. Also, I started to use the money that I got from my work in the pharmacy to pay for the rent of my dorm. As a result, the money that I got from my work helped me to start studying pharmacy immediately after the graduation from the high school. As you can see, how work is important for students to help them study in
Academic obligations are not the only responsibilities for American high school students. One of the responsibilities that many students have is a job. The unemployment rate for teenagers is a mere 9.1 percent. The reasons why students work wildly vary. For some, it’s to earn
In conclusion, my hypothesis was incorrect. People who procrastinate the most does not have a higher GPA than the people who procrastinate the least. The data shows that the average GPA of people who procrastinate the least is 3.98 while people who the most is 3.23. It is clear that procrastinating have lowers GPA. Procrastination does not have a positive effect on GPA. An extraneous variable could be that student failed their classes that resulted in lower GPA. They had sports to play in school resulting in procrastination. the survey looked bad and they did not get it seriously. They put down random numbers since they might have been bored with the surveys. The class is AP so they would worker than the people who are not in AP classes. Also,
An eventful study undertaken by Britton et al. (1991) [2] tested the hypothesis that college Grade Point Average (GPA) would be predicted by time management practices. In that study 90 college students were participated. As a result of the study it was concluded that time management practices may influence college achievements [2].
The first cause of students dropping out of college is due to the fact that they are unable to balance their work and school together. A questionnaire was completed by 42 first- and second-year students from a single degree program at the end of Semester 2. Findings - Within this group, 83 per cent of students worked at some point during term-time of their degree program. In total 58 per cent of those students who worked did so to either cover or contribute to basic costs of living. While the majority of students felt they could balance work and study, half of all students questioned felt that working could have a negative impact on their degree classification (Working to live). Even full-time
