Teachers should show that they care about their students by being kind, showing compassion and asking about students’ life’s outside of the classroom setting. I agree with Lavoie when he discusses how teachers should ask questions about student’s personal life’s because this way students can feel like they have a special connection with their teacher. Out of all of these motivational approaches, I feel like I am a student who is motivated by people. For example, when an adult figure in my life, like my parents for instance compliment me on my achievements, I feel way better about myself and I feel accomplished for making them proud. The six motivational approaches Lavoie describes help motivate all different types of students. Part two of The Motivational Breakthrough focuses on the role that parents have in student motivation. Students need their parents support and strength in order to succeed academically, but sometimes parents may feel unwelcomed in their child’s school, which hinders the child’s education. Lavoie discusses how parents should know that they a right to be involved in their children’s education. Parents should not be afraid to ask questions about how their child is doing in school and they should feel encouraged to have meetings with their child’s teachers. Communication between parents and teachers can help motivate the child because they can come together to figure out what motivates the child the best. The teachers also have a huge role in
The life of many college students is stressful and challenging. (Medora & Woodward,1986) For college students being forced to go to school is never the case but it is a choice by the student whether to attend or not. Motivation then plays a huge factor for student. Motivation is needed to pursue the certain major the college student chooses by interest and the success to graduate college.
Family involvement plays a major role when helping students prosper in the school setting. In order for children to be successful, as a teacher, we have to provide support to the parent’s to make an effort in wanting to play apart in that success. Communication plays a major part in the effective relationship between families and school. Giving the parents a sense of idea as to how their child is doing in school is built through the student’s academic needs.
Parents should always be an essential and ongoing part of school curriculum; just because their child starts school it does not mean they need to stop teaching them or not be a part of their child’s learning process (Lindberg, 2014). According to Lindberg, parent involvement is described as, “an ongoing and systematic approach involving such activities as providing knowledge and skills in needed matters in order to ensure and support both student’s academic and personal development, the establishment of ongoing and active communication with teachers and school administration, recruiting and organizing parents’ help and support by volunteering in the activities demonstrated in one’s school and classroom, and creating
The United States of America is known for being a country filled with people of many different ethnic backgrounds. Likewise, the student population in schools is just as diverse as it continues to grow. Lynch (2015) notes that schools are expected to teach their students “how to synthesize cultural differences into their knowledge base” as this will help “facilitate students’ personal and professional success in a diverse world” (para. 8). Educators must be able to provide for the diverse needs of students and are expected to equip students with skills that can lead to healthy development as it can affect higher levels of student achievement and students have more opportunities of success in their future. Providing students with tools and skills requires an awareness and acceptance of their ethnic identity. Once students have developed self-acceptance about their ethnic identity, they can begin to feel empowered and motivated to do well. Through cultural empowerment, students of color can develop intrinsic motivation and achieve academic success.
Parents play a pivotal role in the academic success of students. Therefore, it is important for educators to provide frequent opportunities for collaboration with families so they can support student learning at home. Additionally, regular communication with parents helps them understand the educational programs in school so they can monitor student progress and advocate for their child’s needs.
Why are some students more motivating to pass than other students? Some students have a challenge with their self and some not. Can you consider for five minutes in which kind you are? However, everyone like to be the best in this world, but if you will not come your class, do not do your homework, or you cheating from your friends how you will be good college student? Some students failing their courses because they do not have enough attention in class, they broken rules, and they do not study
An example of this can be found in a journal article, in which researchers studied the effects on students who were told stories of famous scientists’ failures, as opposed to those who were told stories of famous scientists’ successes. This made the stories more relatable, thus improving the students’ motivation (Lin-Siegler, Ahn, Chen, Fang, & Luna-Lucero, 2016).
Through this representation, students and families feel accepted and appreciated. This in turn leads to family involvement in the student’s education. Family involvement often brings about feelings of acceptance and appreciation for the student, when in turn leads to student motivation. “The circumstances in which children are raised and the involvement of their parents in their early education play a role in shaping academic mindset and motivation” (Usher & Kober, 2012). Families feel more comfortable communicating with teachers who can understand and relate to their backgrounds. Additionally, teachers can learn a lot about the child’s strengths, weaknesses, and home life. The result is that teachers can create a proper learning environment that is based on differentiation, and increase the student’s
In addition to professors, students also lack enthusiasm while attending college. Although the overall atmosphere is friendly, quite often students are unable to fully engage while on campus. Often I hear how Cleveland State feels too much like a community college, partially because over half of the student body are commuters and are unable to stay for long periods of time. This circumstance does not always help improve relations between student’s faculty, and administration. For example, issues such as time management, communication, and stress are some of the main complaints from all three sides. As a result, student motivation to finish college at Cleveland State can drop drastically, which reflects the thirty-three percentage of alumni.
Thank you for your reply. You are correct the United States are facing some unbelievable and uncontrollable debt. However, the military plays a critical role in our society. furthermore, the debt that have mounted up due to the military still do not equate to the many lives that they save. The military is set in place to protect the United States. Also, training for the military is needed due to all the attacks and threats that the United States endure. I think that every dollar that is spent on training for the protecting of everyone is a dollar that is spent well. For example, in my organization I cannot image not training individuals for the job. Consequently, if my organization do not train individuals for the job the job will not be performed correctly and will lack motivation. It is understandable that the military is trying to bridge the gap between retention and recruitment and the only ways to do that is to create awaress. Creating undergrad awareness and motivation will take a little finesse on the military part.
I choose to apply to Western State University when I thought of a new career path. Western State peaked my interest when I was talking to students that attend the college. They told me about how the class sizes are small which will provide a more one on one interaction with the professors. When I went on a visit to see Gunnison, I found that there were a lot of potential outdoor activities. Being outdoors has always been a big part of my life due to me being a Colorado Native. The campus has so many opportunities to offer with interesting clubs, activities, sports, and events. I can really see myself being a successful student at Western State. Being the second sibling to ever go to college in my family, I have set high standards goals for
Currently I am attending Houston Community College in Houston, Texas. I lost both of my parents at the age of one, and since then sacrifices was something my family and I had become accustom to. As the youngest some assume that everything is given to me. I had to teach myself how to become my own idea man. Rise by my God fearing grandmother was very challenging at times. With the help of God, family, friends, teachers and community also taught me the true meaning of hard work, responsibility, work ethic, teamwork, and dedication. I was a member/ student currently mentor with the Positive Black Male Association of Houston. Our mission is to empower youth, build strong bodies, minds and spirits in our homes. By impacting achievement and promoting
Parental involvement in education is a vital essential for creating a cooperative environment for the student to thrive and succeed in. When a student knows that he or she is receiving support both inside and outside the school, the chances of that child becoming responsible for and active in their education are more likely. I know that there can be difficulties including parents for many reasons. Such parents may be too busy, uninterested or just feel helpless. However, as an educator, I will still have an obligation to reach out to these parents and assist them.
Another reason for my interest in student engagement and motivation is the landscape of my own classroom. If you walked into my classroom at during any given school day you would see me teaching students with little to no English
The teacher began the lesson by showing students a place value chart. The teacher also checked for fluency by asking the students double fact addition sentences and had them write on their individual white board. The teacher had the students use a place value chart to count $124 with in their groups.
