With college expenses rising rapidly, more and more students are working while taking classes.
The Daily Nebraskan spoke with Chris Timm, the associate director at Career Services, for more information on how a student can find the best job.

According to Timm, it’s important to be able to balance school and work. Timm said mMany incoming students, when coming from high school to college, are surprised when they find out thethat the college workload is a lot heavier. Needless to say, school is expensive, so students should avoid missing classes, lectures or events simply for the sake of a job. A student should make sure to discuss their class schedule with their employer and figure out what time schedule works best for their academic life. …show more content…

-- Timm recommends reaching out to former teachers and employers are recommended. A student should make sure that those who are on the reference sheet have approved the use of their name prior. After sending out resumes, a student should contact their references to let them know to expect a call from potential employers. are okay with it and let them know if they should be expecting a call anytime soon.

For a student looking for work, it is recommended that they look at Husker Hire Link or around the college of their choice. Colleges will typically post information on upcoming or available jobs which relate to the colleges specialty.

A student should try to find a job in their field. While any work experience looks good on a resume, jobs which relate to their future job look better.

“Students across campus, across the community can do a whole lot of things,” Timm said, “Physical jobs … administrative … I just hope what people do is ask, ‘Am I gaining skills for my long range career?’ For example, if a student wants to work with children but has spent all their time working at a restaurant, that’s really not going to help them as much.”
