ABSTRACT

The Filipinos have a rich archive of history, from the prehistoric era, to the Spaniards rule in the Philippines, followed by the Americans and the Japanese, followed by the Marcos regime, up to the present situation of the country. All these events have a significant contribution to who the Filipinos are today. We have been honed for so long a time and still are being molded in this present generation. Jose Rizal’s works, as many of the Filipinos believed, have been an instrument to awaken the sleeping thoughts of the Filipinos toward nationalism. One of which, is the famous novel Noli Me Tangere, where a significant character Pilosopo Tasyo once said, “I am writing for the generations of Filipino: yet to come, a generation that will be enlightened and educated, a generation that will read my books.” This is an evident proof that Jose Rizal, as a national hero, is a great thinker and has avoided death of many Filipinos just to achieve Philippine independence. He used his pen, and wrote novels, poems, and other writings that condemned the injustice that the Spaniards imposed to the Filipinos. In doing so, Filipinos were awakened from their long sleep and decided to end this injustice that they have experienced for so long.

4 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The study intends to investigate students’ views on Filipino historians’ articles about Jose Rizal as the national hero of the Philippines. Specifically, the study seeks to: 1. explain the impact of Jose Rizal’s writings to the Filipino people. 2. assess the awareness of students on the issues concerning Jose Rizal being the national hero. 3. determine the effects of students’ unawareness of the works of Jose Rizal. 4. determine the effect of reading the articles about Jose Rizal to the minds of the students. 5. find out
