Introduction The goal for every teacher is to equip their students with the tools and strategies they need to be successful. Educator’s today are faced with many obstacles in order to meet the academic and emotional needs of all students in their classroom. Traditional classrooms move students to another classroom at the end of the year, while looping provides educators the opportunity to remain with their students to the next consecutive grade level. The shift toward single-grade classes with a single-teacher educational model was established and remains prominent today (Roe, 2009). “Looping” is a practice where the teacher remains with the same students for more than two or more years. Looping provides the potential for both academic and social benefits for students. (Eric Digest) The additional time allows educators to provide students a sense of stability, an expanded curriculum that builds upon previous learning experiences and prior background knowledge, and the time to build and maintain strong interpersonal relationships and a sense of community (Kerry Roe, 2009). The idea behind looping is to avoid student anonymity by creating a longer-term relationship between the students and their teacher in a learning community. Academic benefits were reports with improved academic achievement scores, and more enthusiastic attitudes toward learning in general. The looping environment offers teachers the opportunity to have a deeper understanding of their students, which will
During the months of September and October this semester I spent time at two different schools in four different classrooms. Being able to observe different classes and teachers at Westside Junior High and South Live Oak Elementary was a very new and exciting experience for me since I can’t say I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. My experiences at these schools gave me a better insight into the differences between schools, classrooms, and teachers. The purpose of this field experience was to get 10 observation or tutoring hours in an elementary or junior high setting. I chose to observe a
Further, this simplicity in her teaching approach led to a published a book called The Art of the Classroom. Haughey takes all educators back to some of the basic elements of classroom management that is currently being fine-tuned by classroom teachers as we just started the 2017-2018 school year. “Student achievement at the end of the year is directly related to the degree to which a teacher established good control of the classroom procedures in the very first week of the school year.” Harry Wong, The First Days of School: How to be an Effective Teacher.
In looking at the needs of an entire school, it is important to examine the needs of each individual student. It is known that not every student learns the same and achieves the same; therefore, each intervention should be personalized for the individual students. For the past two years, Whitley County High School has developed an intervention model that focuses on the middle tier of students. It is thought that these students can be instructed at a level that brings them out of the middle
One way students could benefit is that this schooling could provide them with an increased student centered instructional strategy during a year-round school year. These could be activities that activate prior knowledge, hands on projects, in depth discussions, and multiple intelligences. These learning experiences are highly effective, but they are also time consuming. On a multi track schedule, students could also be exposed to smaller classroom sizes, which could benefit the student giving them more time to themselves, and to their assigned teacher for extra instruction.
and student attendance, reduction in discipline problems, reduction in teacher stress, increased motivation among teachers and students after returning refreshed from more frequent breaks, and increased availability of enrichment opportunities during inter-sessions” (Palmer & Bemis, 1999).
A teacher who was part of a year round system recounts, “I found myself going through 3 school years without that opportunity for self-assessment and planning for the future of the educational program.” (“The Effect of Year Round Schools” 1999/22 February 2005). With a much shorter summer break, teachers will not have enough time to increase their education, which can benefit the learning of their students. For these reasons, year round schools are not as beneficial as the traditional school year.
Year round schooling has been growing more popular among school districts. Just in case if you didn’t know what it is it is a form of schooling that operates 180 days a year. It never closes but has some form of breaks. In this case I will be talking about a year round school that goes for 5 weeks then has 2 weeks off. We will also examine the different point of views from the parents, students, and teachers.
The purpose of Response to Intervention is early detection and identification of learning concerns of students and the development of an individualized plan that addresses the appropriate prescription for resolving the students’ academic or behavioral issue. In our twenty-first century learning communities, students are required to participate and are engaged in educational activities that may challenge their ability to grasp the concept in manners conducive to their learning styles. Schools are challenged to examine their methods of instruction to meet the needs of all children making them successful in all areas of academic content. “A quality school is a place where students learn to think and apply knowledge to new situations, where students are involved in and excited about their learning, where students make individual gains in process and knowledge, where adults know they care about individual students,
Year-round schooling seems to have students more absorbed in their classes. Year-round schooling also has many different impacts on students, teachers, and their families. However, year-round schooling does have its disadvantages. If teachers aren’t prepared for the changes, the student's education may have to suffer (Lyttle, 5). Some teachers also don’t like year-round schooling because they feel summer school is the best option for behind students (Varner, 1). Although, year-round schooling has more advantages than disadvantages. Unlike traditional schools, year-round schooling teaches for eight weeks then there is a small break (Lyttle, 5). Over 88% of families, teachers, and students have a positive opinion on year-round
What do you know now about ways to incorporate student's prior knowledge, experiences, home language and culture in science teaching? Provide specific examples of how you would do this with your own students. How has 4311 and 4312 impacted what you know. How has your student teaching experiences impacted what you know?
This training program is intended to be provided for the staff (clinical and non-clinical) of primary unit care of the public healthcare system of the Dominican Republic. These set of employees are formed by three different groups: general physicians, nurses, and health promoters. All these groups have interaction with patients under different circumstances.
In your reflection, please attend to the following and cite specific examples from your student artifacts and video.
There are many tools that are essential to create a learning environment that is safe and inviting for all students. Some of the tools that are essential in a safe and inviting learning environment include classroom rituals, arts integration into the curriculum, and the transformation of school culture into the school family. These tools are just a few of many that can be used to create an effective learning
Successful college experiences revolve around three major areas: the transition, being successful in classes/schoolwork, and involvement. These three areas have been determined from my work in the Housing and Residential Programs Department for the past three years, as this is my first lass focusing on student development theories. The three areas are must all be present in some way, shape, or form in order for success. The first step is the transition from high school to college. This is inclusive of moving away from home, and entering into an entirely different miniature society. Incoming students need to learn to adapt to their new surroundings, develop relationships, and a find their support system. Adaptation is important, for many
Have you ever felt overwhelmed at the beginning of school? As a teacher, the beginning of the school year rush is something that has been dealt with over and over so it becomes a familiar and daunting routine, but for a child it can sometimes cause apprehension and frustration in school and at home. Imagine how easy it would be on the student and teacher if learning was able to begin on day 1, without the trouble of learning names, establishing rules and routines, or getting to know parents. Bus changes, lunch money, and school supplies scattered are just a few more of the things teachers and students face when getting new students each year. Students are nervous, sometimes to the point of avoiding any reaction with the teacher. They’re trying to figure out where to put their things, when they can go to the restroom, or when lunch will occur. The time wasted during the first few weeks of school could be utilized in a better way. One way that these beginning of the school year irritations can be lowered is through looping. Looping has received much interest over the past few years. Looping is the practice of keeping groups of students together for two or more years with the same teacher. A relationship is built between students, teachers, and peers lessening the need for time to get to know you activities because those things have
