Chapter 14
1) Fuel/energy needs for Physical Activity (different intensities), during and post exercise

-Adenosine triphosphate (ATP): o The energy-carrying molecule in the body
(ATP must be generated continuously since muscles store only enough ATP for 1–3 secs of activity) -Creatine phosphate (CP):
• Stores energy that can be used to make ATP
• 3−15 seconds of maximal physical effort
*(0-3 sec) 100% ATP/CP
*(10-12 sec) 50% ATP/CP 50% Carbohydrates
*(4-6 min) 6% ATP/CP 94% Carbohydrates
*(32-40 min) 100% Carbohydrates
*(2-3 hr) 75% Carbohydrates, 20% Fat, 5% Other
*(5-7 hr) 65% Fat 35% Carbohydrates

-After creatine phosphate, glucose is the next source of energy for ATP production

adipose tissue
• Can be toxic when taken in excess
• Megadosing: >10 X recommended intake
• Water-soluble vitamins:
• Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
• B-complex vitamins
• Thiamin
• Riboflavin niacin
• vitamin B6
• vitamin B12
• folate
• pantothenic acid
• biotin

-Not stored in large amounts:
• need to be consumed on a daily or weekly basis
-Deficiency symptoms, including diseases or syndromes, can arise fairly quickly

Minerals
• Naturally occurring inorganic (non-carbon-containing) substances
• All minerals are elements
• Simplest chemical form possible
• Not digested or broken down prior to absorption
• Major: require at least 100 mg per day
• Sodium
• Potassium
• Phosphorus
• Chloride
• Calcium
• Magnesium

Thiamin (B1)
• Metabolism of CHO & BCAA
• Assists in production of DNA, RNA, & synthesis of neurotransmitters
• Good sources:
• Pork products, sunflower seeds, beans, whole or enriched grains
• Deficiency (beriberi):
• Muscle wasting, nerve damage

Riboflavin (B2)
• Involved in oxidation−reduction reactions
• Part of coenzyme glutathione peroxidase (antioxidant)
• Good sources:
• Milk, enriched foods, meat
• Light sensitive
• Use opaque milk cartons
• Ariboflavinosis (riboflavin deficiency)
• Sore throat, swollen mucous membranes

Niacin (B3)
• Two forms:
