Study habits are a vital predictor for academic performance in students. Study habits are defined as a student’s pre-examination actions to improve learning and performance. Some constructive habits include: reading and taking notes, preparing for examinations prior to the week of the examination, choosing the best fit environment, having a positive attitude, and an underlying motivation. Research studies have shown that personality has an influence on study skills (Crede & Kuncel, 2016). Study habits vary for individuals based on timing of their studying, course level, major, settings and resources (Hora & Oleson, 2017). These findings support that appropriate study habits are consequential to academic performance (Kleijn, van der Ploeg, & Topman, 1994). Hora and Oleson (2017) conducted two surveys in 2017 called the Your First College Year Survey and the College Senior Year Survey. These surveys recorded that there was a decline in the amount of time that students spend studying and doing homework; students spend ten hour or less compared to fourteen hours in 2003 (Babcock & Marks, 2010). They also found that studying is self-regulated, but it is highly shaped by the course design and how it is taught (Hora & Oleson, 2017). Students who are more motivated and believed in their abilities are more likely to possess appropriate study habits and perform better academically. Using a correlational study, Pintrich and De Groot recorded that self-regulation had a significantly positive relationship to academic performance with an r value of .83. 173 seventh and eighth grades from a science class self-reported self-efficacy, self-regulation and academic performance. Academic performance data was recorded using grades from class assignments. These findings support the idea that having a good study habit correlates with increased academic performance (Pintrich & De Groot, 1990). A causal study done by Crede and Kuncel (2016) showed that study habits have a strong relation to academic performance.
