CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Effective study skills are necessary for a high school student to excel academically. The student must develop these skills in order to retain information learned in the present for their future benefit. Study skills can be a combination of several techniques, including time management, note taking, self

With Engineering Science and Education Program as its curriculum, the school is a lot different from ordinary public schools. The school offers subjects more than what is offered in ordinary public schools. It also has its own grading system that readily distinguishes students that are good in science, math, TLE and language.
The third year curriculum offers the following subjects: Filipino III (Noli Me Tangere), English III (American Literature), TLE III (Civil Technology), Math III (Advanced Algebra, Advanced Statistics, and Pre-Calculus), Science III (Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology), MAPEH III, Values Education III, Social Studies (World History), and Computer Literacy (Web Design). With its thirteen (13) subjects, third year students has to do a lot works and therefore must develop and improve study skills that will enable them to pass all the subjects.
In this study, junior SRSTHS students are the respondents. They were selected as the respondents because they are the batch that has gone through different political issues having past students, parents and teachers to question their qualification and quality and the admission where they went through because comparing with the last batches of third year students they are the first batch who got a very low average on the annual National Achievement test administered last March 2011 on their
Carter, C., Bishop, J., & Kravitz, S.L. (2011). Key to Effective Learning: Study Skills and Habits
College students mostly get nervous about all the sudden work load that they face and may fail in many steps throughout their college life. They might end up needing help and professional advice on how to get good grades and survive their college. John Langan in “Three Keys to Doing Well in School” says (that) the three most important factors to a student’s success in college are attitude toward learning, good study skills and involvement with reading. Langan emphasizes on these three main points, sharing his opinion on how these keys are important and says that one should have much self-respect and determination to earn the reward by hard work rather than relying on luck. Furthermore, Writing and taking notes is another major key when it comes to enhancing study skills. Also, being organized and having a schedule setup for almost everything helps an individual to work on time and complete the assigned work ahead of time too. Reading is also an important step to better performance in school or college as it helps you think well, increases your vocabulary and helps you become a more successful person. These factors are some of the most important characteristics that a student should develop throughout his life to succeed in life as it helps build and strengthen the future of the student.
Study skills are used in everyday life. They are the skills you will need to study and learn with. Using skills to study is best for your own personal needs and will help you out a lot throughout life. Study skills are not just used for students. When people develop study skills they find what skills are best for them. It usually comes naturally as you go through school and do homework. From experience, you find what study skills are best for your learning and what skills are not. You also need to practice the skill that works best for you. It is also good to try other study skills because something else might work out better for you. I used to love working in groups but now I would prefer to work alone most of the time. That is because it usually seems like one person is doing most of the work while the other person isn't. This is why study skills are important.
Study skills are fundamental to academic competence. Effective study skills are associated with positive outcomes across multiple academic content areas and for diverse learners. Study skills improve the competences associated with acquiring recording, organizing, remembering and using information. These skills also contribute to success in both employment and non - academic settings. Studying is often an individual activity
Internal validity of this study included data collection process and student personal interest in education. For example, students may have scored in exam because they concern about their own education. Reliability of this study instrument has not been tested. This is the first time this group will have this survey. There is no former survey to use as a standard to see if there are many changes.
Some of the strategies I want to keep and start applying to become more successful student are to Plan weekly study times, log onto Blackboard a minimum three times per week, work hard, and set SMART goal. Planning weekly study time and check Blackboard are very important to me because I need to know how my schedule will be for all of my class and when my assignment due. For each week I have to work hard complete all the tasks on my weekly plan and I want my goal to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound for exactly what I want to achieve so It will keep me focused on what I want and what I have to do to get there.
This book is a well-known textbook concentrating on learning how to form effective study skills. This textbook is used in training entry-level college students on how to develop good study habits. This book was written by Carter, Bishop, and Kravits which are well known authors in the circle of education. This book was found in the e-Book section in
Study habits and techniques were non-existence for me in high school. I never did anything but look over notes or previous work. The only time I remembered studying was around the time we took our standardized testing. Looking back, I can’t recall ever learning any study skills or strategies. It may have been that school for me was easy and I had no reason to study. Or I was not challenged academically to have to study. Nonetheless, soon I would find out the difficulties of navigating college courses without effective study skills and habits. I fell behind in college early because of my inability of how to study and what to study for. Just like me, there are many more students that have never been taught effective study skills and habits
, we interviewed 165 students. 79% of the students were in ninth grade as Freshman, 8% were in tenth grade, 10% were in eleventh grade, and 4% were in twelfth grade as seniors. The participants were made up of 58% male
It is important to be aware that students tend to put all of their efforts and time in school to get the best possible academic performance. Especially for high school students who are expected to go to college after they get
To achieve good grades in high school a person must be disciplined in their study habits. Once a person reaches high school these habits must be ingrained into the personality of the young person so that they are second nature or it is to late.
Like many students I have trouble studying for classes and the many test that are assigned within the classes. I find that for some classes different techniques need to be used to get a better grade on their tests. For cognitive psychology remembering terms and concepts is essential and needed to pass any of assignments that have been given. Although I did okay on the last test I feel as if there is much room for improvement for my grades. I would like to try to retain most of the knowledge that I read and pick up in class ,however this task is easier said than done . The specific things I would like to focus on when it comes to this class is remembering the key terms used during lectures ,and being able to recall them properly during test and other situations. Being that this is a cognitive psychology class there are many techniques that I learned that can improve my way of learning and processing new information.
Studying skills will help you be more successful as well, there is also to much studying. To much studying can cause stress, and dense learning habits, also pushing your self to hard may ruin learning skills and cause your self to feel bad, or not as intelligent. Study skills for tests, quizzes, and exams is very important. Evenly spreading out study time will increase memory of the subjects you learn. Taking frequent breaks will make studying less stressful. Using flash cards, web sites, computers, or just a pencil and paper are all great ways to study. Having an answer sheet to refer to, and look over when your done will also help study and learning skills because it can help you see what you did wrong and need to fix. Having a study group or club before big tests, like exams or diplomas, will help you have more fun with your friends when studying.
Intellectual skills is (S-V Agr) another important aspect of becoming a good student. This skill includes the ability to read and understand, intelligent use of resources, mathematical and logical skills, efficient study habits, and the ability to communicate clearly and fluently. Intellectual skills include time management, exam strategies, study strategies, and goal setting.
This reflective paper is mostly about reflecting on our past experience as a student and what worked and what didn’t in our study habits and how we can improve those habits in order to get more out of our learning. Reflecting on one’s own knowledge and experience is a valuable tool in order to learn from the mistakes that have been made, not just so they never happen again but so improvements can be made to increase knowledge and learning habits. These improvements can be made through the use of time management, learning management, course learning outcomes, peer support groups and the ALC (Academic Learning Centre).
