Participants Participants were 64 females and 56 males (n = 120) ranging in age from 17 to 22 years (M = 19.53, SD = 8.55). All participants attend a Liberal Arts University on the southeast region of the United States. Participants were selected based on a convenience sample, and all participants volunteered to take the survey and received no compensation. An additional 15 participants were excluded from our study because they failed an attention check question in the survey. To ensure participants did not take the survey twice, their names were recorded on consent forms. Measures In the present study we measured the fear of missing out, overall social media use, and active and passive engagement. Fear of missing out Surveys given to participants included a pre-existing FoMO 10-item scale with questions such as, “I fear others have more rewarding experiences than me (Przybylski et al., 2013). Questions would be answered on a five-point Likert-type scale: 1= not at all true of me, 2= slightly true of me, 3= moderately true of me, 4= very true of me, 5 = extremely true of me. Additionally, the scale included one extra item to ensure participants were paying attention to the questions being asked. The overall FoMO scores for individuals were averaged across items (M = 2.31, SD = 8.55), and the scale showed good consistency (Cronbach’s a = .85). Overall social media use We developed four-items to measure social media use on Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram.
