Stylistic Techniques in "Richard III" Essay

Throughout the Play Richard III, author William Shakespeare incorporates great uses of stylistic features to aid the overall quality of the story and to help achieve success within the very complicated plot. In an attempt to intensify Richard's plot to gain the throne of England, he uses three specific minor plays, to create an overall production for the audience. The first play which we see involves Richard connecting directly with the audience on the same level in Act 1 Scene 1. He tells us that despite the recent bloodshed and destruction caused by the War of the Roses, he is in full swing in an attempt to take over the throne of England. As she is grieving for his death, he is able to twist her opinion on her. He admits to killing her husband in the war and is still able to persuade her into caring for her despite the fact that she has such extreme feelings towards Richard at the beginning of the scene. It can be seen in her descriptions of Richard, as a "Foul Devil", "a lump of foul deformity", and even a "hedgehog" (Act 1, Scene 2) By the end of the scene, Richard without fail gives her a ring, which serves as a symbol of unity. "Vouchsafe to wear this ring." (Act 1, Scene 2, Line 220) We also see Richard manipulating Clarence in Act 1 of the play. He is obviously lying to him in telling him to stay well, although Richard knows that Clarence is going to be killed. The third play which we see in Richard III is a smaller play, but never the less, very well played out. Richard and Buckingham plan to persuade the mayor to let Richard become King, as if it were the choice of the people. In doing so Buckingham and Richard make a show of it, to help the mayor make his decision. The show includes props and directions so it gives the mayor the correct impression. In order to help act out this scene, Richard incorporates people to play. All of these additions are planned in accordance with the regular ongoing play. Shakespeare also incorporates a lot of juxtaposition as another stylistic technique in the play.
