In the late 19th century as artists like Van Gogh and Cézanne expanded the boundaries of painting. Soon, a movement arose that sought to create an entirely new style of art, and one way of doing so was to look beyond Western civilization. For example, Paul Gauguin moved to the island of Tahiti in the 1890s. There, he found inspiration in the island's inhabitants, landscape, and culture to create artwork that intertwined European themes and Polynesian lore. Others looked the cultures of the Islamic world, but the most influential inspiration would come from Sub-Saharan Africa. The violent clash of patriarchal Europe with the Americas and other parts of the world during the colonial period directly caused a degree of cross cultural diffusion that is evident within art. During this period of immense change, european artists sought to innovate and take a modern approach to their work, breaking away from the established mold. Abigail Solomon-Godeau write of one such artist from this period, Paul Gauguin, not only for his experimentation into expressionism but for the relation to which he viewed the native people of Tahiti, regarding them from a primitivist lens, appropriating much of their culture, and the sexualization of women.
During the age of cross-cultural interactions, regions went through similar changes and continuities. These regions allowed consistent causes and effects to emerge and change their societies. These changes and continuities are evident in the regional societies located within Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas. In Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas from 600 to 1450 CE, opportunities for women changed, however religion and labor continued to influence society.
