This week-long program allows for the family members of an individual undergoing substance abuse treatment to learn about addiction and how to better deal with their loved one’s illness. They are also given tools for their own coping and recovery. According to the CeDAR website “research shows participation in our addiction family support program helps increase overall recovery rates” (Family Services: CeDAR, 2016, paragraph 4).

No one likes to talk about drug abuse an addiction, but the fact remains Thornton is not immune from such problems, especially considering its close proximity (12 miles North) to a large city like Denver.
This paper examines the consequences following the use of alcohol and recreational drugs. There are many individuals that are incarcerated that are part of a substance abuse program that provides treatments and different methods to help them overcome their addiction. There are often moments where these offenders have characteristics that affect the treatment all due to criminal thinking and criminal value (NCBI, 2005). Many times, these criminal justice clients resist treatment and deny that they have a substance abuse problem, which can create chronic problems for them if they do not seek rehabilitation (NCBI, 2005). Often, offenders usually will have psychosocial problems that can contribute to their substance abuse, which they have no control over after a period (NCBI, 2005). With these psychological issues, it can cause the individual to have a low self-esteem, depression, anxiety; and also enhanced expectations on the use of substances (NCBI, 2005).
Boys face the stereotype of always having to be tough and confident (pg.286). So, Terrel, being an athlete, might start to consume alcohol to show his strength and to appear cool and adult-like to his peers, especially to other boys. He might also take on smoking and consuming alcohol since he has lived with his mother who has these unhealthy habits. Even, when she was pregnant with him, she was smoking and drinking and has not been successful in eliminating these habits. Prenatal exposure to smoking and alcohol raises the likelihood of a child to consume these substances early in life (FindYouthInfo 2013). Terrell grew up to be a quite healthy child despite having had a very high risk of developing FAS or FAE. But his mother continuance with these unheathy habits puts him at great risk of developing substance abuse.
Jessica, I would like to say that I enjoyed reading your forum about substance abuse and substance use disorder. Individuals that are substance abuser does not have to have substance use disorder (Doweiko, 2015). Substance abuse does not always turn to the physical addiction of the substance (Doweiko, 2015). However, neither substance abuse nor substance use disorder are more important than the other. In both substance abuse and substance use disorder, the individual that uses the substance most likely feel that the incentive for repeating the use is more powerful than it is to not use (Doweiko, 2015). Many healthcare and human service professionals are not properly trained to treat substance abuse nor substance use disorder (Doweiko, 2015).

The steps that I would take to resolve Substance Abuse/Opioid misuse is to continue on the same path as our 44th President Barack Obama. Obama’s focus was to work with the healthcare professionals from doctors, nurses, dentist, and their methods of prescribing opioids. I would reduce the quantity of opioids a patients receives, and the length of time the patient takes the medication. While providing training and proper strategy to end this opioid epidemic. Providing the necessary help to those who face the addiction. In order to end this opioid crisis that we are currently going through, both Canada and U.S. key decision makers need to work with the Advocates for the Reform of Prescription Opioids to ensure that opioids are selectively used
