On the subway, the air conditioner was put on max and roared constantly throughout the cart, but it was not strong enough to cool the place effectively. People crowded together on the subway as more people got on contributing to heating up of the cart. As I sat squished between by cousin and brother, I began to day dream of not being on the subway and at a cool place not filled with people or humidity.
As the trains stops in downtown Toronto I can see lots of people walking on and off other trains, tall buildings, lots of cars, and the people all look so happy it just makes you feel happy inside. Now we have to walk to go to the subway and take the subway to the gym where the games are played. The subway in Canada are much cleaner and nicer than the American subways. As we walked down the concert stairs you could hear the train coming a mile away. As you see lights coming from around the corner you know it is close. As the train slowed down again you saw a lot of other people on the train. We walk onto a much longer train. On the inside it is warm and carpeted. Not many chairs but plenty of standing room. We have to wait three stops before we got off. Everytime the train stopped you could feel yourself leaning forward then jerking back. Also as the train turned you could see the whole train looked like it was being bent. As you walk up the concert stairs then walk onto the street and the sun hits your skin after being underground you feel
On the story of “On the Subway” the author Sharon Olds describes the main character in depth. The author uses imagery and symbolism as the techniques that describe the main character.
It was almost 4am and we had slept in the cold LAX airport on black and while marble floor. Very comfortable and accommodating. At this point a cardboard box on a heating grate in New York would be the Ritz Carlton. Jamie and I stared at each other coldly, hating each other, damp sweat and anxiety poured over us. Silence. We just want to get out of here. "This sucks." Was a common response to our deliriously back and forth conversation as we tried to keep our spirits up.
The cold water from condensation went through my glove as I wiped the seat. I thought to myself, “What a stupid choice. My gloves are now wet and I have a ten-minute ride home so they will likely freeze“. Then the warmth of the sun hit me. The clouds had cleared and offered up from behind the wall which it had been hidden, my favorite object−the sun! I had not seen it for almost two weeks and to feel the warmth on the back of my neck was a much needed mental boost. The wonderful heat, cut like a hot knife through butter, and helped the humidy level go
I woke up and hoped my furnace was working and was ready to be put on full blast. It was a frigid cold day, the coldest it’s ever been. The weather man called for the temperature to be -59 degrees. I walked outside and the air made me feel like I couldn’t move. It was that cold.
My family and I went to Chicago, for a family reunion. We took a plane there and you could see everything, windmills, houses ,roads, field, and clouds. The flight was only about one hour long from Omaha to Chicago. When we got to the airport in Chicago and there were people shoulder, a bunch of people in line to board planes. The only thought that went thought that came to my mind, was that when we come back to go home we will wait for hours to board the plane to take us back to Omaha.
It was a frigid February Sunday. In the suburbs of Washington DC, the weather is like an infant, no knowing what it will do. I began my day gloomy, as I have been for the past couple of days since the day Maa passed away. I raced the sun to see who could get ready quicker, and I won. My head felt quite cool for I forgot that my hair had nearly been shaved off. I had the taste of chocolate milk in my mouth from last night, the warm mug that my aunt gave me. My next challenge was to get around this labyrinth in my room to the bathroom. Instead of rustic walls, the walls consisted of guests laid across the floor, staying at our place for today.
For my poverty simulation I chose the “One Night Without A Home” which gave me a new perspective and changed my view on how I perceive others in that situation. My first thought during the beginning of this experience was the lethargicness I was facing because of the already long day in addition to the mile long walk to Fun Park, however I was still in pretty good condition. Towards the end of the night when it was actually time to go to bed it was near freezing and just got colder throughout the rest of night to where It was extremely hard to get any sleep whatsoever. In which I rarely got any sleep except every couple of minutes and once awakened and having to walk around on my feet, it was quite painful as of the cold had seeped into my
It was a hot June day and it has been the hottest I’ve ever felt. At 110 degrees almost everyone looked like zombies withering under the harsh New York sun. The rest of the people were trying their best to wave the heat away with whatever magazine, folding fan, or folder they could find. I was simply chilling inside of an air conditioned city bus. I just got on the bus on Kingsbridge coming from a volunteer service program. However, before I got on the bus I was one of the many people standing at the Kingsbridge stop waiting for the 3 bus. For half an hour, I was trying to hide in the shade from the sun while angrily watching a few ‘NOT IN SERVICE’ buses zoom by. When the bus finally came I practically ran with my metrocard in hand to get
I have been working at Subway Sandwiches as a supervisor for quite a while. I have leaded my crew during crazy busy shifts, have trained several new workers and have also trained new owners, when the bought the franchise for the 1st time. My policy is to show not to tell, whenever I am training someone I ask them to shadow me while I show them how to do every task required. My pace and style of doing things could be different, but for someone new they have to learn everything from scratch. Therefor I don't show them everything on my regular style and pace, but rather in a way that is easy for them to understand and learn. I also mention all the possible mistakes other workers I have trained and me myself had made while doing a specific task,
The tedious hours on the plane ended as I walked to the bus, which drove the passengers to the airport. The Australian warm currents of air hit me for the first time as if I had just opened up an oven to paradise with the scorching heat masking my face. This is the feeling I had forgotten existed since being back in London. I forced my mood to placate, as I was now no longer tightly squeezed- as if I was the unlucky middle matchstick in a pack- into the tormenting seats of the plane.
The aroma of the vegetation of the whole jungle mixed all together and formed a smell that engulfed the air around me creating heavenly humid atmosphere. I took a deep breath in not wanting to exhale and wishing that it could be a replacement for oxygen, I could feel little drops on the tip of my nose that were tickling me. As I basked in this atmosphere it felt like I was in another
Our bus broke down, our hotel rooms were given away, and the air conditioning was counterproductive, and what we thought be an eleven hours ended up taking twenty-six. We finally arrive at the school, where we would be sleeping for the rest of the week. We stepped foot off the bus and we were immediately taken back by the sweltering thick air. Apparently, Philadelphia was in the midst of a heat wave, bringing in record highest of 105°F. After such a long journey the feeling of failure was weighing upon us. At the end of the day we were all exhausted and ready to fall into a deep slumber. Then we realized our room, just like the bus, had no air conditioning. We lay there sweating against the plastic filled air mattress dreading the preceding day when we would be hiking the melting streets of
Throughout the late afternoon, the temperature of the apartment rose to a staggering heat. Adorned in my hoodie, I feel I 'm sitting in a sauna. What was I thinking when I elected to
A few minutes before we landed at the airport, I looked at the screen in front of me and it showed ‘33°C’. It had been a year since I last experienced that kind of heat and I couldn’t bear it last time, so I wondered how I would cope with the heat this time. As the plane began to slow and turn into terminal, I could hear people around me start to get there belongings together so that they could get off the plane first. People returned the magazines to the rack on the back of the chair in front of them and I turned off my iPod and put it back in my bag. When I took my headphones out, I felt like I was back in the real world now as I had been concentrating on listening to music for hours. It seemed like time was going slower and slower
