Through a colossal sugar-coated black-female sphinx, in addition to a series of life-sized, sugar and resin boy figurines, the artist Kara Walker successfully shows her concern of racism and gender inequality in a historical context--according to Walker, she tried to create a heroic figure that could possibly "fix the problem of the history and racism".

According to the FDA there is a new nutrition fact label about the added sugars. It gives the consumer better information on the labels and to be better informed. The FDA can only do so much with the labeling, it is up to the individual to read the labels and make a suitable decision when choosing their foods. I know reading labels is something that we just don’t take the time out to do, but it is very important that we read the labels on all of our foods. However, the added sugars should be reduced in one diet to aid in obesity and other health
The Portuguese took sugar to Brazil. By 1540, there were 800 cane sugar mills in Santa Catarina Island and there were another 2,000 on the north coast of Brazil, Demarara, and Surinam. The first sugar harvest happened in Hispaniola in 1501; and, many sugar mills had been constructed in Cuba and Jamaica by the 1520s.[26]
The purpose of this experiment was to identify whether or not an outside source of sugar would have a positive effect on the respiration of the Elodea canadnesis plant. Plant specimens were placed into beakers along with a 5% sucrose solution and were left to respire for an hour under a lamp after which the plants were removed; NaOH was then added to measure the net CO2 concentration in the beakers. Our results showed that the exogenous sucrose inhibited respiration in the Elodea plant and increased photosynthesis. This was shown by a lower CO2 concentration in the beaker with added sugar as opposed to the beaker without sugar. This shows that one way of lowering the acidity of the plant’s water, caused by it’s CO2 production, would be to add an external source of sugar to the water to inhibit respiration to a degree, and increase photosynthesis which consumes CO2. If respiration is decreased to a high enough extent, it could be used as a way to control the spread and overgrowth of Elodea. The exogenous sucrose causes the photosynthesis process of the plant to increase and consume more CO2 than at a greater rate than it produces it through respiration. This causes the CO2 levels to decrease and could then lead to the slowing and eventual halting of the plant’s respiration, causing stunted growth or even death.
