This documentary is taking a look at the toll a sugary diet takes on the human body. The argument is that big corporations take advantage of the public by putting out health conscious advertising while still selling unhealthy products, thus causing the obesity epidemic that we see today. However, it is completely possible that obesity is a result of genetics.
It is common to see a set of overweight parents give birth to an overweight baby. After a couple generations this becomes a common trait among family members as habits and DNA are passed down. We can't simply blame the food industry for a problem that begins at home. There are plenty of people as well that stay relatively thin and healthy while still consuming the same sugary diets. It
In “Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food” by Michael Moss is about the rising numbers of obesity in both adults and children throughout the United States. On the Evening of April 8, 1999, some of the biggest food industries CEO’s ad company presidents come together for a rare, private meeting. Discussing the emerging obesity epidemic and how they should deal with it. Big time companies food is lacking the nutrients that a person needs and is more concentrated on how to make it more desired. Keeping the customers coming for more. While the industries are gaining a profit, the customers are gaining a big belly.
Food companies are to blame for the major impact of obesity in America. People are often tricked into eating more food because of the taste. The terrible ingredients that are in the food is causing the weight gain. There are health problems that comes with being obese like the most common one type 2 diabetes. Michael Moss uses pathos and logos to tell readers why more than half of Americans are considered
In The Sugar Film by Damon Gameau, have showed many ways on how people gain weight easily. Not only involves fat in order for a person to gain weight, but it is about sugars. Sugars have been around for many years, but there are foods that have too much added sugars. In the film is says that in supermarkets there is 20% out of 100% that contains sugar. This means that many Americans are eating many sugary goods and avoiding healthy food because now there taste buds is used to the amount of sweet the people intake.
This film is very fascinating, but it does tend to drag through statistics, graphs and grainy film of cholesterol bubbles and arterial plaque which is overwhelming to my untrained eyes. One of the most interesting moments of this film occurs midway, as Mr. Fulkerson bites into the global consequences of our food choices and the extent of corporate influence on our official nutrition guidelines. Debunking food-group myths
Michael Moss wrote in his book “Salt Sugar Fat” the effects of our nation’s increasing choice of unhealthy eating and the effects following that decision. The book defines the actions food giants like Pepsi or Kraft perform in order for more people to come back and purchase their product. By appealing to ethos, logos, and pathos, Moss achieve his goal in presenting and persuading the readers the growing problem American people have today.
Tobacco, alcohol and poor diet are the main risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and respiratory disease that kills approximately 35 million per year. Out of the three risk factors, an inadequate diet was found to the culprit of more diseases than smoking and liquor consumption combined. In Aseem Malhorta’s (2014) article “Sugar is now enemy number one in the western diet”, he claims that added sugar should be regulated as it is a health hazard that has caused the increasing prevalence of diabetes and obesity. Malhorta only focuses on sugar being the main causative agent in causing negative health outcomes, he fails to address the fact that there are many other confounding factors associated with each disease
The New York Times’ David Bornstein’s “If Sugar is Harmless, Prove It,” Bornstein recounts his interview with Gary Taubes, a science journalist and recent author of The Case Against Sugar. In this interview, Taubes explains what he feels is a direct link between sugar and insulin resistance and, as a result, America’s widespread epidemic of Obesity. He goes on to talk about the steps he feels are necessary to take in order to end said epidemic.
It is an eye opening experience… Everything we’ve been told for the past few years has been pure and utter lies, and it’s time to put a stop to this all. This is the film the food industry will be ashamed of. The one and only “Fed up”directed by Stephanie Soechtig. Truths will be told, and lies will be unleashed. Is it true that we need to exercise more? Or is it just hereditary? There is a worldwide epidemic of obesity all caused by one and only one substance, sugar. The enduring presence of obesity in the world is horrendous, and even still obesity is not being taken as seriously as it should be. The food industry is trying to maintain innocence, and even though we are given all the facts, we are consistently ignoring all the signs, and being
The position the film maker presented the ‘epidemic’ of obesity specially focusing on the health risks that increases from only eating McDonalds the film maker interviewed health professionals and specialist to be reliable and credible. The health professionals use technical language ‘obesity will overtake smocking as the leading preventable death’. The film maker made the film to raise awareness about the growing number of people with obesity particularly in America. The film maker makes the target audience feel sock, fear, guilt and shame for example, the opening scene began with children singing about fast food. This is shocking because as a society we want children to be healthy and make good choices but sources of media is manipulating children into wanting fast food. A lot of the advertisement appeal to primary to
Americans are obsessed with the idea of losing weight. The health and fitness industry in the United States is a billion dollar industry. If this is the truth, then why is our country the most obese country in North America? The reason is that we underestimate how poor diet affects both our physical appearance and our health. It seems as though every year, a new fad diet sweeps across the country. There’s the low fat-high carb diet, the high fat-high protein diet and many more that we hear about. However, we do not seem to address the root of our food issues: sugar. People need to understand that sugar addiction is a real epidemic and the United States government needs to step in to regulate the sugar and additives that are so accessible
The film starts with that government and many industrial companies say that people become obese when they don’t do exercise as much as they eat; on the other hand, overweight is the lack of people’s effort and exercising. However, it is not true that exercising can deal with every obesity. In the video example, fat people like to eat the food that makes people fat, but they try to choose less calories, more fiber and whole grain food, but it doesn’t effect to our body from the fat. Because that’s not a real diet food, but they don’t realize that. Nevertheless, food business, such as Coca-Cola shows that obesity can be solved with exercise using the media and advertising. Because companies are more interested in creating their own profits rather than other people’s health, they make a false result as favorable towards them, while the funding of university research and expert’s studies. Not only in the U.S, but also Korea say “less eat food and more do exercise, then obesity can be solved”. Actually, I agree with the statement. Exercise helps us to make inside of body and outside of body healthier, however, the problem is that people who interest more to make money than other people’s health lie that exercise can overcome every obesity and
From the medical perspectives, Dr. Robert Lustig believed that it is the consumption of sugar that is primary cause of the epidemic of obesity, especially in children. Nowadays, most of American foods contain added sugar in various forms, from fructose, cornstarch to corn syrup. There is literally no difference between these sugar ingredients, because they are basically the same. Take fruit juice for example, it is basically soda if we take out the fiber. The food industry is getting smarter at hiding their ingredients to mislead consumers. Additionally, the food industry funded their own study and research to mislead consumer, especially about the calorie intake. Due to the consumers’ lack of knowledge about their food products, the food
When you are hopping in and meandering around any supermarkets, you could see a variety of candies lying everywhere, catching customers’ eyes. These types of candies such as Jolly Ranchers, Twix, M&MS are really making customers unable to resist by grabbing them and taking a few bites. But , do you think everyone should have a sugar free diet instead of overly taking high level of sugar? The answer is absolutely yes. Because taking high level of sugar will greatly influence your brain working properly, leading physical health issues, easier causing injuries and become over weighted.
As we continue through the 21st century we notice the increasingly alarming rates of Obesity in the Unites States. The new foods on the market we eat trying to get back into that size 6 we were in high school not only provide a healthy advertisement but a secret little demon within. In the documentation " The Sugar Film" directed and produced by Damon Gameau shows us the journey of a man who takes the new and improved healthy food we eat every day trying to lose those extra pounds and reveals to the world the unbelievable truth. May the food we believe was healthy be the reason we can't lose those unwanted inches?
They're making it seem as if we've already dug our children's graves and we can't do anything about it, that the teens of today are destined to succumb to the weight and die. However, if we'd just taken the time to put our children on a healthier path instead of standing their in awe in how their health is lowering by the days, we would've already solved the problem drastically. Unfortunately we've already dug too deep to make the solution easily available and at such a low quality economic state, but if we gradually agress the problem to a point where simple fast foods could come as rewards well earned, instead of just meals, we'll have solved the problem in a long time span albeity, but at a greater outcome which is that the children of the future will be taught by healthy adults that will then continue on the teaching of good health. The bigger picture may be holding us back from dealing with this matter in a quick, timely matter, but we just need to better devote our time and to plane out the future in a way that is OK with the child and the adult, son that they may continue the gradual growth in the child's
