Should we put warning labels on sugary drinks? A question that “CalBev” (California Beverage Association) has to decide is whether companies should put warning labels on their sugary drinks. Many people have their own opinions and reasons why or why not we should have warnings on sugary drinks; My opinion is that we don’t put warnings on sugary drinks. First off, there are plenty of foods and drinks with way more sugar than soda, why should we waste our time worrying about soda? “An apple a day keeps the doctor away (and contains loads of sugar)” yes, you heard it an apple has about 21 grams of sugar in it, (more than half the sugar in a can of soda.) Never did you think about warning people who eat apples of how much sugar is in there. They act as if soda is the only food/drink that contains sugar. We all know that is not even close to the truth. Should we start putting labels on everything? Also, do these people actually think this will change others opinion on the soda that they drink? Chances are, most people who consume this much sugar are aware how unhealthy it is. By law, they are already required to write the ingredients of what is in that food, can't they just check the ingredients, if not than what is it there for. The list of ingredients is to make sure that the consumers know what they are eating, believe me it is not to look cool on the …show more content…
Some people may need the sugar (people with diabetes.) As we all know we are all tired 90 percent of the time, this isn’t some strange coincidence, it is because we are all active. Admit it, you know that everything would taste like cardboard without sugar. Some are less active than others, but they know it and that's is where they come into to burn that fat, it doesn’t happen overnight people! Also, these people are focused on cleaning up our diet when constantly, day after day, people are DIEING because of drugs but they aren’t concerned about
In the Article “Your Favorite Drinks Can Wreck Your Body” by Russ Lloyd that said “Yes” to having labels on Sugary Drinks. People think that having sugar in your drinks is good because they know what they are drinking and what is going to happen to them if they drink too much of it. Then there are others that think that it is not ok having labels on the drinks. They say that they will ruin the drinks and they will ruin the company's money that they are getting from making the sugary drinks. I agree with putting “Sugar Labels” on the sodas that we drink. The reasons why people say that it is good to have the labels on it is if they drink too much of the drink them they can get sick, how much sugar is in the drink and if they do get rid of the sugar them the taste. In conclusion, sugary drinks should have a warning Label because people need to know what is about to go into there body and what might happen to them if they consume too much of the drinks.
In the article “Putting Warning Labels on Sugary Drink Would Save Lives, ” by Russ Lloyd, it talks about how if we put caution labels on soda it will prevent many people from drink as much sugar as they do. In the text it shows how if we put caution labels on soda then it will prevent many terrible things. First off, people can get many health problems from it. The article states, “Eating too much of it can lead to obesity and put you at risk for heart disease, diabetes and so many other health problems” (Lloyd 18). This shows, how putting labels on soda can prevent many terrible things because, people can get many health issues with people’s body. Also, sugar is addictive to most everyone. The author explains, “In fact, brain scans reveal
To begin with, these sugar regulations would need to set a limited on the amount of sugar allowed in these products. Otherwise, people will continue to consume more and more sugar. Right now, it is a fact that “Each 12-ounce serving of soda a person consumes each day raised type 2 diabetes risk by 10 to 15 percent, and many Americans are consuming
Sugar can turn your liver into scar tissue if you have too much. Sugar can also lead to obesity. You can put yourself at risk of a heart disease, diabetes and mood swings and so much more. Dr. Robert Lusting (2014) claims sugar is ''poison'' for the human body. California students eat 160 fewer calories a day than other students in other states because we have labels on fast food menus (Brownnell, 2011). "The California Senate recently passed a bill designed to do just that, and it may soon become a law (Lloyd, 2014, p. 18). Americans deserve the right to know what can make them
If the idea was to get people to not drink the these beverages as much as we are used to then a tax would be going at it all wrong. It would be a better idea to have more marketing or information about the benefits of limiting their sugary drink intake. I don’t even think I have ever seen an ad or service announcement about not drinking soda. Everything shown to us is to encourage us to go to the store and pick up the pack of soda or a huge bottle of gatorade. But there are ads against smoking and drinking shown all the time. Ads are about awareness and are an easier approach to the public because it’s a win-win (Clemmit). These companies don’t lose customers to high taxes and the public learn some of the health issues that come with most of the products. If we were going to put the same taxes on sugary drinks they would have to be treated the same. “If you want to tax the hell out of soda, then you need to make people think that’s a drug, not a beverage - that downing a Coke is just like puffing on a cigarette (Engber 641).
Lawmakers in California recently passed a bill to put warning labels on sodas to tell people how bad they are for you. There was also a law passed that said stores could not sell large sized soda to people but was shut down because lawmakers are not allowed to tell people what they can or can't drink. The reason behind putting warning labels on soda is they felt like it would limit people from drinking soda and they tried the same thing with cigarettes and more people now than ever smoke.
Soda companies “dramatically announced that they would aim to cut the number of sugary drinks calories by twenty percent over the next ten years by reducing the portion size and trying to sell more zero-calorie and low calorie options.” By reducing the portion size, Americans could be drinking more cans, and possibly drinking more ounces than they were originally. As for the zero-calorie and low calorie options, the drinks are considered by doctors to be worst than the original because they contain artificial sweeteners that are not ‘natural sugars’, but chemically made sugars that puts an individual at greater risk of being morbidly obese by slowing their metabolisms, and is also known to elevate their blood pressure. Mexico’s soda consumption and obesity rate was once worst than the United States a few years ago, Mexico then established “a significant tax on soda and junk food.. Soda consumption in Mexico fell by a couple of percent points almost immediately.. there was almost as large increase in the sale of bottled water (not taxed).” Mexico had went ahead with its initiative to stop their nation’s problem, as for the United States, soda has become a major part of our diets. I believe that is restricting us from progressing from this aggravated problem.
We’ve come to a conclusion soda and sugary drinks are a pernicious disease. “Welcome to the Coke Side of Life” “Red Bull Gives You Wings” “Six Million a Day” those are just three of the thousands of slogans these billion dollar companies use to lore you into your casket a little earlier than expected. It is true that “Fully 42% of the annual $142 billion in health-care costs attributable to obesity are paid with public funds through Medicare and Medicaid, and obesity is but one disease affected by poor diet”. A person who consumes one can of soda a day is 26% likely to have type 2 diabetes and 20% likely of a heart attack, the overall good to be gained is by adding taxes on sugary drinks less people who buy them then the obesity rate will
It is no secret that one of America’s biggest health concerns is obesity. Sugar has been linked as one of the greatest causes of obesity. The amount of daily sugar intake has increased over the past years and with it so has it’s health risks. The food industry is now adding additional sugar to their products. Many of the big named companies are great contributors to the obesity rate in the United States. Those with the greatest impact are soda companies. These sugary drinks are a major contributor to this epidemic. Sadly, many people are unaware of the consequences that excessive sugar can cause. Therefore, soda companies should add to the beverages that contain
According to West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, about 300,000 deaths per year are from obesity. Sugary drinks should be labeled. Sugary drinks lead to obesity and diabetes. It can also increase your risk of a heart attack. Plus sugary drinks are said to be as addictive as drugs. According to kidshealth.org, 1 out of 3 kids are obese or overweight and we need to change that by putting labels on sugary drinks. But if we put warning labels on soda, what will we put warning labels on next because everything has sugar. Also, it will bring down the sales in the industry. But if we start putting labels on sugary foods and drinks, the number of obese people will slowly decrease and we can put a stop on sugary foods and drinks.
There have many attempts by nutritionists to prove exactly how much sugar we are consuming on a daily basis. Jamie Oliver, a famous chef, is a huge advocate for informing families, and often speaks out about the issues we overlook in our diets. (https://www.ted.com/talks/jamie_oliver) We are being increasingly aware of what we put into our bodies, and as this movement is happening, companies are realizing that they need to be more honest in their labeling if they want consumers to still buy their products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new nutrition label that will inform consumers better of how much sugar they are actually consuming.
I do and don’t think that sugary drinks should have warning labels. And here are my supporting reasonings, I do think that we should because in the article it says “The average American eats more than 22 teaspoons of sugar a day.” I think this is bad because people don’t notice how much sugar they actually have in just a day and even a week. I also think that we should have warning labels because the amount of sugar in soda can lead to serious health issues such as Obesity, Heart Attacks, Diabetes and much more.
According to CALBEV, a non-alcoholic beverage industry throughout California, only 4% of sugary calories are in soda and putting warning labels on sugary drinks won’t help or change anything. It won’t change anything because it’s not just soda there’s better and easier way that might actually work. Therefore putting a warning label in every single sugary drink wouldn’t change anything and there’s a better way than just putting warning labels on sugary drinks.
To start, sugary drinks and foods are a negative addiction today. Also, the sugar in foods and drinks are killing people. Second, warning labels are wasting time. Lastly, sugar is spreading everywhere. In conclusion, I think there shouldn’t be warning labels on drinks and foods because it doesn’t help with society.
The company should actually should warn us how much of the sugar is inside one soda, or alert us that it is harmful. Some people have diabetes and it really could harm them. Even though soda gives us energy but it has negative impact on our health, and possibly also make us gain weight. Some company does not care if it harms their customers as long as they gain profit from them, or other company, which it is a huge disaster.
