Troubled Teens
“Ethan felt like there was no point going on with life. Things had been tough since his mom died.. His dad was working two jobs and seemed frazzled and angry most of the time. Whenever he and Ethan talked, it usually ended in yelling. Ethan had just found out he'd failed a math test, and he was afraid of how mad and disappointed his dad would be. In the past, he always talked things over with his girlfriend — the only person who seemed to understand. But they'd broken up the week before, and now Ethan felt he had nowhere to turn. Ethan later went on to seek out his dad's gun with which to attempt to take his life”(Tracy).

If someone you know has joked about taking his or her life, they may not be joking. The reason for these people wanting to take their life is unknown, however, divorce of parents, formation of a new family, or moving to a new community, are common reasons for suicide. People may think that everything is going wrong and dying is the only solution; but people will always be willing to help. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and nothing is worth taking your own life over.
Brandy Vela, an eighteen-year-old high school student, committed suicide right in front of her family. Due to all the bullying over her weight, and especially in social media, she pulled the trigger and ended her life. It is said that her sister had heard a noisy disturbance and when she went upstairs to her sister’s room, she found Vela holding a gun pointing at her chest. “She is just crying and crying and I’m like, ‘Brandy please don’t. Brandy no.’” Jacqueline the twenty two-year-old sister told Fox News. (Fox News-Texas Teen). Fox News said Brandy Vela was taken to Clear Lake Regional Medical Center immediately but died soon after. The rate of suicide, the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally, increases each year. “More adolescents die each year from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, combined” (Preventing Teen Suicide, 2016, p.2). These facts show suicide is a serious problem among teens. Last year, teen suicide became the second leading cause of death in the United States confirming the significant increase in teen suicides.
Kutner, Max. "Teen Suicide Is Contagious, and the Problem May Be Worse Than We Thought;

Romeo and Juliet is a powerful story on how serious suicide is. There are some people who overlook it and think it isn’t a big deal, but it is. Teen suicide needs to stop for good. No child deserves to feel like they don’t belong, and that no one cares about them. No child deserves to be abused in any way. What teens need to understand is that there is always going to be somebody out there who doesn’t like you but try not to let their words get to your heart. Be strong. Know that you are beautiful just the way you are and there is always somebody out there who will

Sadly “suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15 - 24 year olds”(Suicide Awareness). The United States needs to start helping these teens out, because every year more and more teens commit suicide. Every person has been affected by this problem one way or another. Teen suicide is one of the largest problems facing America at the moment, and it will only become worse if the country does not come up with a solution. “According to the American Psychiatric Association, suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between eleven and eighteen years of age (Teen Suicide).” American families can not keep losing sons and daughters to this entirely preventable epidemic. The largest issue with teen suicide is that Americans are using largely outdated and/or ineffective strategies in dealing with teen suicide, and Americans need to realize that this problem will not just go away. Using the old methods, such as telling teens to toughen up, are clearly not working and in some cases are contributing to the problem. Teen suicide is alarmingly on the rise and “According to the CDC, 5,504 people ages 10 to 24 died by suicide in 2014, the most recent year in which statistics are available. The figure was up from the grim 2013 tally of 5,264, and the number has risen every year and up 13 percent from 2010 (Corbin).” There are several causes for teen suicide that range from depression to concussions, and for each cause there are several proposed solutions to suicide or its causes, but many of the solutions will cause more problems instead of solving current ones, Americans need to utilize effective suicide prevention strategies and ignore the useless and outdated ones.
As well as many factors there are also many preventions to stop teen suicide. Some of these factors are talking to a counselor, a guardian or parent, and many others. “Stephen Levine, author of Who Dies? and other books on death and dying, calls service the key to transforming suicidal thinking.” He thinks that a service that talks to people that have suicidal problems will help prevent people from committing suicide. “Levine says that many counselors add to teenager’s feelings of isolation by denying them.” He thinks that counselors just make teens who feel suicidal feel even worse. “ ‘I would have liked for someone to talk to me not about not doing it, but about why I wanted to do it – to acknowledge that the feelings were there and try to figure out why they were there’ says Tanya.“ “Heckler says ‘the number of suicides would be halved if people in

Most people have heard about the get help hotlines and the advertisements associated with suicide. Although we 've all heard about it, not much is being done about it. Johnson states the facts about suicide, “claiming 39,518 lives in 2011, or more than 6,889 more than in 2005” (10). This small piece of information goes to show just how much suicide has increased in the last few years. Besides being the number 10 cause of death among all ages in the U.S., it is the 2nd leading killer of adolescents, or “people between ages 15 and 19” (Peacock 1). Also, the number of completed suicides only touches the surface on the dilemma it truly is; this is because there are 25 suicide attempts per every suicide (731). What goes unnoticed is that suicide is on the rise for a number of reasons including mental illness, bullying, social media, and high expectation perfectionist teens.

This is the one single age group that has seen an increase in suicides over the past thirty years. There are about 10,000 reported suicides reported annually. It is estimated however, that the true number of teen suicides is actually three to four times that number when unreported deaths are factored in.
