Suicide is the act of intentionally ending one's own life. In the near future, I will be working a as a social worker. For this reason it’s probable to have contact with clients who are at risk of suicide. Therefore, I should to acquaint myself with the warning signs of suicide, appropriate responses and who to contact in time of crises. Two years ago, my 14 years old could has committed suicide and the whole family was divested. I remember talking to my cousin, not long ago and her still blaming herself for not recognizing the distress in her sister. She told that she feels that she could have done more and an older sister. I tried my best to comfort her in the best possible way I can. I was told by another member that my cousin wrote a note
Suicide is a very sad subject for all those who have had a relative or friend who went through it. However, suicide doesn’t only go across teens minds it also happens to adults as seen in the article, “Survivors of Suicide Loss”. Jessica is the daughter of a man who went through suicide and she says, “The emotions that ran through me are close to indescribable, as I had never felt such pain. How this could have happened, and most importantly, how could this have happened to me and my family.” This is a case where the suicide was caused by depression. At the end of the day we all have to just try and be closer to those we care for and
Suicide does not generally come without warning. Almost always, persons considering it show symptoms or provide clues to their intent. It is important, however, for crisis workers to know how to read these and be able to distinguish between myth and reality. (Kanel, 2003, p. 76)
Lives are slowly being lost due to suicide and not only is it affecting themselves but also the people who are around them. Suicide is defined as taking of one’s own life and it is an issue that should be given all attention to. Teen suicide has been talked about in every source of media and it still continues to have a harmful effect in todays generation. In the United States the eighth leading cause of death is suicide, within developing teens, suicide is the third leading cause of their deaths (NAMI). There are many signs of someone who is contemplating suicide. And there are many reason for someone to be driven to the point of suicide. Those reasons being if the teenager is dealing with depression, bullying, sexual abuse and abuse
Love is a major theme in almost every novel and is one of the key characteristics in many plots. Love can affect a character's decisions, emotions, and overall actions which is what makes it one of the most influential themes. That is why I chose love for my theme because it is present in everything people do. Love is an impactful theme in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, A Patchwork Planet by Anne Tyler, and The Awakening by Kate Chopin. The Great Gatsby showed the theme of love in two significant ways.
There has been a myriad of research investigating the symbiotic relationship between hippocampal volume and major mood disorders (MDD) like depression. Despite being one of the most prevalent illnesses, the underlying pathogenesis and neurobiology of MDD remain unclear. It has been widely documented that patients with a MDD tend to have smaller hippocampal volumes (Sheline et al., 1996, Nordanskog et al., 2014). The hippocampus is known to be closely affiliated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which is required to produce glucocorticoids that are involved in stress mechanisms (Chen et al., 2010). Moreover, stressful life events are considered a critical risk factor in the development of depression (Zannas et al., 2013). This, coupled with findings which suggest that depressed patients have difficulty with hippocampal-dependent learning and memory tasks (Gould et al., 1998, Gould et al., 2007), accentuates the relationship between the hippocampus and MDD being mediated through stress. There are various hypotheses regarding what may cause hippocampal volume diminution as a consequence of stress. Major propositions involve hippocampal neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus (Becker and Wojtowicz, 2007), glial numbers, apoptosis (Czeh and Lucassen, 2007) and granule neuron numbers (Boldrini et al., 2013). Other mechanisms that may affect hippocampal volume like neuropil reduction, shifts in fluid balance between the ventricles and brain tissue and changes in
Many times when people commit suicide, those around them are oblivious of the evidence left behind that triggered them to self-harm himself or herself. There are many motives that can cause a person to take their own life. Depression, being a victim of bullying, and disconsolate lifestyles are a few of the principals that provoke oneself to be suicidal. Many times those who are in their stages of enacting self-harm, do not inform others of their next action, suicide. However, those who do attempt to speak on their actions of committing suicide deliver these messages through forms of writing, such as poetry or music.
Durkheim argues that the suicide rate is a social factor that can be interpreted as an indicator for social solidarity within a society (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF01114474).
For the purpose of the current essay, suicide will be defined, as an act or instance of taking ones own life through direct, deliberate and immediate acts that lead to death life through direct, deliberate and immediate acts that lead to death (XXXXX). Importantly, one should remember that there are different forms of suicide. For example, euthanasia to end suffering or physician assisted suicide as well as adolescent suicides for individuals that are prepubescent and honor suicides which are completed to escape the shame, placed on themselves or others, of an action they did. Additionally, there are two forms of attempted suicides that should be considered. First there is para suicide, or an attempted suicide using nonlethal means (Curra). Often, these are suicide attempts or gestures such as consuming a nonlethal amount of medication or cutting where the cut is not deep enough to cause significant blood less. Although there are numerous forms of suicide, the primary focus for the remainder of this essay will be on
Suicide is the act of killing yourself. It is the 11th leading cause of death in America (CDC 2009). I have never had any intentions on committing suicide and I never really understood why people commit suicide that’s why I chose this topic to help me understand what problems people go through that makes them do such a thing. Sociology is the study of social behavior and the culture of humans. There are numerous reasons like financial stress, family problems or mental health disorders that lead to suicide. The number one cause of suicide is untreated depression. The issues that were just listed are some social conditions from society that results in a suicidal
The story ‘When ends meet: Life after suicide,’ was a piece I wrote for my university Journalism Unit Feature Writing. The piece explores a 19-year-old female named Jessica Player who recollects her traumatic past when her father committed suicide in their family home. I initially stumbled across a Facebook page campaigning for men’s mental health awareness called “Manhood” after a friend had shared it to their page. I noticed that this page had not been widely received having only a fifty or so likes at the time. It made me interested as to what the catalyst behind the campaign was. I contacted the page and the story began to unfold. I soon discovered that this young woman was actually from my area and had created
The incredible success of the physical sciences in the past few centuries has brought with it a new view of our place in the world. While technology and medicine have made huge strides in giving our species an upper-hand in the fight for survival, elegant physical theories have given us a deeper understanding of the universe itself; having opened Pandora 's Box, most of us are ready to hail the rise of Physicalism, confident that we will soon have a complete understanding of the world and all its workings. But despite its success in nearly every other area, the physicalist worldview meets with a particular problem in the area of the mind. While elegant and sometimes-convincing theories have been put forth to rid our philosophy of Descartes 's troublesome specter, they have each come up against various obstacles and, sometimes, dead-ends. While phlogiston, the ether, and élan vital have been gracefully put to rest, Dualism has, for better or worse, stuck around. Here I will briefly discuss a few of the proposed alternatives to Dualism and some of the issues they have encountered, with the aim to show that, unlike those subjects covered by the physical sciences, the mind brings it some unique properties that may simply not lend themselves to physical explanation.
Teen suicide is something that is endless, it will never stop but if everyone was educated on it, it could help prevent deaths. I think with people provided with statistics and further information can help avoid adolescent suicide attempts. I think most teen suicide cases could be prevent if we knew the signs to look for and the ways to stop it. I believe parents would feel safer if they knew knowledge on the issue and how to handle it. The intended audiences for this essay is parents or friends of suicidal teens. This essay is important because, as mentioned earlier, we need to be educated on suicide to end tons of tragedies. It is also important to be aware of the warning signs to help prevent. This essay is relevant because teen suicide is a war that happens daily, and will continue to happen, until we take control of the situation and do something to stop it. If family members were informed of the cause and symptoms leading up to the attempt of suicide, then there is less likely that teenagers would try and commit
When anybody is tormented I would venture to say they are not thinking clearly at all and that the actions of a tormented person are not the best around. Saul when he was tormented, he took a spear and tossed it at his son in law David, with the intentions of killing him.
Have you ever known someone who’s committed or tried to commit suicide and thought, “I wish I would’ve done something, said something, to stop it from happening?” I know I would ask myself that question everyday if I hadn’t. A few years ago, a good friend of mine thought her life was so bad she wanted to end it. I did the only thing I could think, and told the nearest teacher. It may sound so childish or stupid, but it worked. Luckily, she’s still alive and well. I’m here to make sure you can make the difference and help a person who might be, or is suicidal. Just think of what would happen if you didn’t try to help.
For some teens, striving for perfection has led to harming their own health and wellbeing such as living with depression and suicide. Teenagers today are relying on what they see in ads, T.V., magazines and on the internet for their input on appearances, the way they think not only comes from media sources, but from family and friends.
