The author, Vitelli, starts off the article by stating a fact from the Center For Disease Control statistics, saying that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in America, with around 44 thousand people that kill themselves every year. But, only one in 25 suicides are actually fatal. Also, there is no way to tell is deaths caused by accidents or natural occurrences are actually suicides. Even though more people are attempting to commit suicide recently, new research and advances in the medical field are helping to figure out why so that this new movement can be stopped.

One of the main problems that seems to stick out is marital and relationship problems. Vitelli says that not only people who are dealing with problems in their relationship are easier to succumb to suicide, but studies also show that ending a relationship can increase the suicide risk as well. In the same way, being in a committed relationship can help against depression and stress, this sense of commitment may be dangerous after the relationship goes away. Being in any relationship requires a significant input of someone's time, emotional bonding, shared friendship and property. Having this taken away from someone can definitely have some serious results.

The author then goes over the Attachment Theory, and that the attachment that adults feel towards their partners is very similar to the attachment that a baby feels for their mother. People look to their partners for security, comfort, and close
