I think that all civilizations must have a stable food supply, technology, a writing system, a social structure, government, form of art or architecture, and religion to be considered a civilization. The city-state, Sumer, has all of these qualities of a civilization, so in my opinion Sumer was a civilization. The first and in my opinion, most important quality of a civilization, is stable food supply, all of the artifacts that we looked at in class indirectly show that Sumer had a stable food supply, they show that because without a stable food supply people wouldn’t have the time to make these things and inventions, they would be working on providing food for themselves and their family. The upper class was made up of nobles, priests, government officials, and warriors. The middle class was made up of traders, artisans, and citizens. The lower class was made up of slaves. The fifth quality of a civilization is government, this is important because the government creates the keeps everyone, including the army, organized. If there wasn’t a government then the city-state Sumer would be in complete chaos until it got conquered. The next quality is art and architecture. Art and architecture is important because art provides the citizens a form of entertainment, and architecture is important because if there wasn’t architecture they wouldn’t have temples or houses.The last quality of a civilization is religion. Religion impacts a lot of things the Sumerians did, for instance, they sacrificed humans to the gods, they also made statues and tablets about the gods.
