The King of the Clouds:
The Red Baron’s Experiences in WWI Compared to Remarque’s Paul Baumer in All Quiet on the Western Front
Manfred von Richthofen, also known as the Red Baron, was a German fighter ace during World War I who shot down a wartime total of eighty planes before he was killed in action. He was widely regarded as the “Ace of Aces” in German propaganda, and was known across the front for his accuracy of shooting during dogfights (“Red Baron”). Even so, he viewed the war as trivial and a waste of human life, and said multiple times that the war was very different from what people back home imagined it. He and the soldier Paul Baumer from All Quiet on the Western

They were both initially cheerful and filled with bravado about joining the war effort, Paul saying that he had been persuaded happily by his teachers and peers to join up, and the Red Baron applying to the German Army Air Service with the request “I have not gone to war in order to collect cheese and eggs, but for another purpose" (Richthofen). But they both also eventually hated war, and the Red Baron is quoted as saying “I am in wretched spirits after every aerial combat. I believe that [the war] is not as the people at home imagine it, with a hurrah and a roar; it is very serious, very grim" (Richthofen) in his autobiography. Paul and Richthofen are 20 and 26 respectively when they are killed, both so young. They also both died months before the war ended. The Red Baron died in April 1918, and Paul died in October of that same …show more content…

During the war, Paul sees that his friends die or get injured. Kemmerich is the first of Paul’s friend to lose their leg in the battle. Paul notices that Kemmerich did not feel that his leg was amputated. Paul remembers Kemmerich as a childhood friend before they had signed up for the army. Paul finds Kemmerich dead after he tries to find a doctor to cure Kemmerich. After Kemmerich’s death, many of Paul’s friends died near the end of the war. Kropp’s leg is also amputated like Kemmerich when he was shot after running away from a battle with Paul. Kropp soon dies afterward after getting a fever from the wound. Paul finds out that another friend, Müller, dies after being shot in the stomach. Müller gives everything away before he dies, including the boots that Kemmerich gave Paul to give to Müller. Paul says that he would give the boot to Tjaden when his time is up. The next person to die is Company Commander Bertinck; he died after being shot in the chest. After Bertinck death, another friend of Paul named Leer is shot in the arm and later dies of eternal bleeding. Many of Paul’s friends also died from the lack of foods and supplies. One of his oldest and closest friends, Katczinsky, is also wounded during the battle. When Katczinsky was wounded, Paul tries to carry Katczinsky all the way back to safety. When he makes it back to
In “All quiet on the western front” by Erich Maria Remarque, the main character is Paul Baumer. He is a survivor in the world war I.
In the story “All Quiet on the Westerfront” a guy named Paul goes through many tragedies, such as witnessing death and also killing someone. In an interview with a guy named William Lake, he talks about his stories about how he went through World War 1 and the tragedies he had witnessed. Also in the readings they mention the things they did in war, whether it's Paul helping out the recruits to protect themselves from the danger of the war or if it's William being a messenger having to run across the battlefield. In the book “All Quiet on the Westerfront” Paul goes through World War 1 and goes through people dying everywhere and having to kill to survive, but at the end of chapter 6 Paul has to help out these new recruits because they don’t
The novel All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, is the story of young Paul Baumer and Troop 9 as they battle in World War I on the Western Front for Germany. This novel differs from most every war novel in that it shows the true emotions and feelings of a soldier on the battle field. It does not portray the men as valiant soldiers protecting their country, but strips away the romanticized view of soldier’s war to portray the raw feelings that soldiers have in the midst of warfare. The troop does not die all together but they are seen dropping one by one. As both Paul Baumer’s life and the battle on the Western Front move forward, Paul’s values, along with those of other the soldiers, evolve until they culminate in Baumer’s
When Paul Baumer returns from the war to visit his family, he is unable to relate to them anymore. He says: “I find I do not belong here anymore, it is a foreign world,” He has been away for so long, that he feels very distant from them. The people back home don't understand the pain and terrors of war that Paul has experienced. This makes him feel misunderstood by his loved ones, and he is unsure of how to share his thoughts with them. While his father thinks of the war as an honorable and respectable place to serve, Paul sees it as a violent and scary place to be.
Germany betrayed Paul Baumer and his comrades. All Quiet on the Western Front is told from the perspective of Paul Baumer, an enlistee in the German army during World War One. He enlisted as a teenager after a push from his schoolteacher to fight for his country. Paul and his fellow comrades experience the horrors of war as they are told to kill and lay down their lives for their country. Paul goes through battles, injuries, the loss of friends and comrades, and he inevitably loses his life.
The war continues to rage, but now that the United States has joined the Allies, Germany’s defeat is inevitable, only a matter of time before German will have to surrender” (All Quiet on the Western Front). During one battle, the allies use chemical warfare against the Germans, and Paul is exposed to the Mustard gas and has been given fourteen days to leave, but he does not because he’s afraid of not fitting in with society and knowing what to do with himself, so he stays and fights. For over four years, Paul has been fighting the greatest war in the 20th century, but on Paul is finally killed in October, 1918. Later that day, the army reports only one casualty and calls it “All Quiet on the Western Front”, which is very intriguing because no shots were fired and both sides weren’t engaged in a fight, Paul seemed to have died on the most peaceful day of the war. Paul and his friends all died during the war, but died together, and the one thing that they foresaw as the enemy was death. Death was all around them and they needed to survive as a unit, but death was taking them away one by one until, Paul dies on the most peaceful day of the
All Quiet on the Western Front is a book that describes the different struggles of World War 1 from the perspective of someone who was there but may have not necessarily experienced it all. In the book, there is a man named Paul. “…Here hang bits of uniform, and somewhere else is plastered a bloody mess that was once a human limb” (208). When Paul is at home, he is having fun with friends and thinking that going to school is so difficult and then he goes to war, and he sees a person blown into pieces and watches thousands of men dying. It is a very different life.
When it comes to war we tend to look the other way not because we think that war is the worst thing that is happening at this exact moment but because we tend not to know more about it. The definition of war is “A conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or between parties within a nation; warfare, as by land, sea, or air”. War is something every country has in common just because there seems to always be something to be fighting about therefor, we seem to not put much interest in it unless we have a family member in it or the war is happening where we are. We should alway pay attention when war is happening not just because it’s important but because if we can't seem to change the way it is handle it may affect our everyday lives. So when it comes to how we should handle the way we portray the things that are happening in the war should we also support either the government or our president to hide information the might risk the life of an individual just so
November 11, 1918 marked the end of a 4-year long conflict between 7 powerful countries: Russia, Germany, France, Austria Hungary, The United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States. Overconfident by their military advancements, these countries endeavored to achieve a quick and easy victory. However, this belief quickly disappeared as the warquick victory soon turned into a 4-year long struggle for power. The war greatly affected the lives of the soldiers involved. Erich Maria Remarque’s novel All Quiet on the Western Front illustrates the torturous conditions soldiers experienced during the war. World War I left heavy effects on its soldiers, depriving them of humanitarian values, the loss to rehabilitate, left the German economy is ruins, providing the perfect sanctuary allowing for the introduction
The greatest war novel of all time, All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, is a novel that depicted the hardships of a group of teenagers who enlisted in the German Army during World War 1. Enlisting right out of high school forced the teens to experience things they had never thought of. From the life of a soilder on the front line to troubles with home life, war had managed to once again destroy a group of teenagers.
Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the greatest war novels of all time. It is a story, not of Germans, but of men, who even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war. The entire purpose of this novel is to illustrate the vivid horror and raw nature of war and to change the popular belief that war has an idealistic and romantic character. The story centers on Paul Baümer, who enlists in the German army with glowing enthusiasm. In the course of war, though, he is consumed by it and in the end is "weary, broken, burnt out, rootless, and without hope" (Remarque page #).
4. Men of Paul 's age group fear the end of the war because the war has taken up so much of their lives and personalities that they wouldn 't know how to function in a world without the war. They were conditioned to violence and battle. Moreover, they spent quite a few of their formative years in the war, and essentially grew up in combat. Older men in the war have jobs and families to which they can return; Paul and his friends have nothing of the sort. They often joke about becoming postmen like Himmelstoss, solely because they want to best him in his own field. In reality, though, they have no idea how they will operate in the world, even if they escape the war alive.

The Red Baron is a film directed by Nikolai Muellerschoen and produced by Niama-Film which was released on April 10, 2008 but wasn’t released in the US until March 19, 2010. This movie was based on a legendary German pilot who fought and died in World War 1. This pilot was known as Manfred von Richthofen. I believe that this film was nicely put together, the plot kept its viewers engaged and wanting to see what would happen next. In this essay I will be giving a brief explanation on the film and why it is or is not accurate and whether the producer did it on purpose or by mistake.
