Chapter 2 “The Rise of the Atlantic World” Footholds in North America Spain’s Northern Frontier • Spanish got their New World empire started by crushing Aztecs and Incas • Juan Ponce de Leon o Founded Puerto Rico and Florida o Killed by Native Americans (Calusa) • 300 settlers provoked Apalachee Natives o Split into groups  4 survivors – Cabeza de Vaca and company arrive in Mexico  De Vaca made alliances with Natives along the way  Inspired other Spaniards to go look for gold • Hernando de Soto o In search of gold in Tampa Bay-Appalachian Mtns-southern Plains o Natives confronted him in Mississippi (Maliba)  De Soto won, but his victory cost him lots of resources o Found no gold, but spread diseases that killed Native Americans in Mississippi …show more content…

• Tobacco – major cash crop o Lots of indentured servants came to Chesapeake area  Most were men – valued higher than women • Women could marry almost anyone • Typhoid and malaria – diseases o Malaria brought from sailors from Africa • Dangerously high death rate among indentured servants o Widows had greater economic power in Chesapeake area  Complete control of husbands’ estate  Could marry anyone to work the estate field • Limited population growth • Population began to grow later, after natural immunities developed Tobacco Shapes a Region • Homes in Chesapeake Region – spaced out • Tobacco – HUGE crop o Best soil – found near rivers  Another bonus – limited transportation costs  Chesapeake area filled with rivers • Wealthiest people built wharves o Easy to export tobacco and import goods • Tobacco bust – suddenly becomes inexpensive o People made living from rent, trade, loan, and interest  Bad for smaller planters • Large landholders were built – required servants o Treated very poorly o Servants that gained freedom had nothing • Virginia – owners had to buy annual clothes • Maryland – same policy, but tools and land included o Freedmen could possibly become successful • Wealthy people monopolized land in
