America is known as “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” yet some people can object to this statement and say, ‘America is not free for me’! Our country’s history shows that freedom may not be free for all of us. With issues in our past, such as slavery, women 's rights, and present-day controversies, i.e. the fight for equal rights for our unborn, LGBT community, and minority citizens, it could cause one to question whether the words on the Statue of Liberty, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teaming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" are true of our country or merely a poem. Curiously, I put this theory to the test. I asked various ages of people how they felt about their freedom. The answers varied greatly. “Freedom is not free” was one answer and one that we’ve all heard in light of the terrorist attacks and school and business shootings. “My freedom is being threatened,” is another answer that when explained took into consideration many of the changes in laws as they relate to minorities. “Being a white male in our society is not what it used to be” was yet another answer.
