Imagine a life without photographs, do you think we would appreciate life more or less? Photographs help us relive the moments we wanted to capture in life that we enjoyed. We are able to reminisce in those events, every single time we look at those picture. Especially since photographs give us a full on visual description on what everyone in the photo wore and the background. In the book, On Photography, by Susan Sontag, she explains how photograph is both an object and a tool and how its utility changes depending on context and intentions of oneself. Not only are photographs a physical object, it gives us a way to visualize a captured moment. Before social media added the opportunity to upload photographs, the only way we can see a photograph is after we printed out the film. Social media is a great way to connect or reconnect with other users; and now that there is an option to upload a photograph, it gives people to be more admirable or hateful.
Teachers are also trying to get students more engaged by including social networks such as Twitter into their classes. Zach Miners, an education writer for US News and World Report, writes about how “a growing number of professors are embracing [Twitter] as a way to introduce students to a different kind of communication” (Miners 534). Professors are trying to get students engaged both inside and outside of the classes, but it is causing one major weakness in students. Using sites such as Twitter in a classroom setting is encouraging interactions over technology versus personal interactions. More often than wanted are many people who ignorantly post things without thinking beforehand the repercussions that could potentially follow, belittling the harm that could ever possibly spring forth, ending up receiving the mighty banhammer and the face of court. 2 Such an example can be seen from a post on twitter of Joe Fitzgibbon “upset by the Seattle Seahawks’ loss to the Arizona Cardinals, he tweeted: 3 Losing a football game sucks. 4 Losing to a desert racist wasteland sucks a lot.” (Bergal). Within minutes, many negative and harsh replies and comments treaded over the post that Joe made public which he initially intended as a satirical post, claiming that he was sorry for those who took it too seriously. With this in mind, let us now create a list of best practices to follow and use so that we may avoid these misunderstanding and mistakes. Judging by the facts and evidence in recent history regarding social media mistakes, the best way to combat this is to keep with what follows but not limited to: Take social media off of your phone and only post through the computer. This way you take the time to rethink what you plan to post about.
