Domestic Violence Cases The website, NCJRS, was important to my research for the fact that the website gave me more information about dual arrest laws. I needed to be able to be informed and to inform the reader over dual arrest laws to prove that some laws are supposed to be in effect to prevent abusers from getting away with domestic violence. I needed to know if laws were present that were like the dual arrest laws to an extent. If I would have never known about this law, I would have never known there were laws present that help corruption improve. The dual arrest laws can help improve corruption because if both of the individuals are arrested, then it will be known that there is a problem and the law enforcement will hopefully be able to determine who the abuser is. It had an abundant amount of information over the topic. The book was able to give me information over cases that covered domestic violence and corruption with law enforcement. For example, a woman has to spend the rest of her life paralyzed due to law enforcement not finding her domestic violence call important enough to go to. This book helped me prove my hypothesis that if there was not corruption, then the cases would not be as extreme. If the law enforcement would have went when she called, that would have not happened that way. The book also gave me information regarding what domestic violence is and educated me more on the topic. It gave me information over mental, sexual, and physical abuse, which I needed to know to decide if some laws should make different cases of the different types of domestic violence have less extreme laws or more extreme
States around the country have given police the right to make warrantless arrests on in partner violence and has even limited their ability to use discretion by implementing mandatory arrests. This has made the job of the police much more difficult because they must go about handling situations like domestic violence delicately. It does not make it any easier now that the term “domestic violence” has now grown into an umbrella term including disputes between adults and children, blood relatives, and couples who sometimes are and are not married. Because the job of the police involves so many different factors and the changing social climate, it’s become quite difficult to discern whether or not having mandatory arrest laws are helpful. They
Life is filled with many difficulties which affect us all in one way or another. However, we do not all face the same difficulties. If we are to survive we need to first understand what these difficulties or problems are, in order to learn how to deal with them. One such problem is, is domestic violence. It is necessary to determine whether the problem is personal one or due to society (social problems), so that the individuals involved can learn how to deal with their situation.
Overall, I would recommend this module as a useful tool. It helps educate individuals about what is classified as domestic violence, which include physical, sexual, and psychological attacks, personal narratives of individuals, and solutions to domestic violence. As well as, this is a great addition to the class in helping students better understand domestic violence, the impacts it has on the victim, and ways to help prevent domestic violence from occurring. College students are getting to that point in their life where they are looking for someone they may one day settle down with. It is essential that individuals understand cues that may indicate an unhealthy future relationship.
Domestic violence is a crime that occurs regularly within the United States. It claims millions of victims each year. There is not a specific cause to establish why domestic violence occurs. However, it has been documented that domestic violence is a product of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, and any other forms of torture or torment that the particular abuser wishes to employ to gain control or power over their victims (Gosselin, 2005). Due to the complexity of this crime, many criminologists and socialologists have studied its causes and the effects in order to determine social policies and additional theories to better understand the causation of domestic violence. The social policies and theories that are developed from
Domestic violence, alternatively referred to as Intimate Partner Violence, is defined by the Department of Justice as “a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner.” While domestic violence is commonly thought of as only physical or sexual abuse, domestic violence can also be emotional, economic, or psychological. Domestic violence has remained constant in society throughout history, even though over time society’s response to the issue has changed. While domestic violence affects everyone regardless of race, gender, age, etc. it is estimated that approximately 90% of all victims are women. For the purpose of this paper, I will be focusing on
It shows how the book is informative on how people treat slaves and whites as not equal, and also sees the daily/ extreme lengths people will go to seek
I think that there are not enough reasonable grounds for an arrest without a warrant. I think more reasonable grounds should be put into place in order to arrest someone without a warrant. This is because I think that if a victim phones the police with a worry they should arrest a person to stop them from doing something, however they usually wait until something has actually happened to the victim or their property.
Identify, define, examine, and discuss the domestic violence laws in your state applicable to this situation between Sarah and her boyfriend. Compare and contrast property crimes and personal crimes and how domestic violence relates to both. Evaluate victim's rights as they related to domestic violence and social responsibility in your state. As Radha Iyengar conducted her research she picked up on a few notable facts about how the laws actually impacted domestic violence crimes. One discrepancy she found in her research was that an abused victim would be less likely to contact the police because they knew their abuser would be arrested and this
The first article that I have selected is titled Racial Minority Women and Criminal Justice Responses to Domestic Violence. It is within this article you gain insight from 14 women of different minorities who expresses their experience when it comes to dealing with domestic violence and the criminal justice system. These women all from different areas and backgrounds recount their experience when it came to dealing with domestic violence and their decision to whether or not to involve the authorities for reason or another. When it comes to domestic violence those from different cultural backgrounds my elect how they address the issue vastly different. In a society where some cultural belives that in a marriage or relationship what happens
The chapter that really hit home for me was “Battery”. I knew that battery was a form of violence but always thought that it was only physical abuse. Per the book, the definition of battery is “abusive behavior that intimidates and controls the battered partner, for the purpose of establishing and maintaining authority”. It does not have to be physical abuse but can also be verbal abuse, isolation or intimidation. Battery and abuse is all about control. There are many tools that can be used to determine if you are in a healthy relationship or an abusive one. One tool is the power and control wheel. This wheel shows the different types of abusive behavior which centers around power and control. A newer wheel has been created that shows the healthy features of a relationship which centers around equality. These tools are great to use when you are confused about what is going on in your relationship. Sometimes you know something is not right but feel like you are over reacting and there is no way you are being abused. Nobody would believe you if you said you were being battered. Well, abuse and battery
Domestic Violence (DV) is a critical social issue that negatively impacts not only our own culture in America but as well as all other cultures around the world. Domestic Violence is a global issue reaching across national boundaries as well as socio-economic, cultural, racial and class distinctions (Kaur & Garg 2008). Domestic Violence is a serious problem that can be seen around every society from families of both developed and underdeveloped countries and of different backgrounds. Although there are various cases of domestic violence against men, children and the elderly; women account for the majority percentage of victims of Domestic Violence. This violence can take the form of physical assault, psychological abuse, financial abuse or sexual assault (Kaur & Garg 2008). Domestic Violence is a trend that is on the rise and will continue to plague our society if nothing is done on time to address this social issue.
Reading further into Souryal’s book really showed me a detailed version of some topics that I had an idea of on the surface. It talked about some of the effects of these topic that were both positive and negative but mostly negative. This to me was very helpful because it went to show me just how important some of these issues are for the criminal justice department and how they will be for me once I start my career.
All those topics are things I will discuss. As mention above, part one talks about the use of pornography and its connection to violence. Cooper-White references a study by an expert on sex crimes in which one of the findings stated “Pornography actually is sexual violence, a document of actual degradation, rape, and torture.” When I read that statement I have to agree with that thought process.
given set of goals. Although it’s a rampant crime, domestic violence is rarely reported. Analysis of the policy on domestic violence is, therefore, important in order to address the problem and achieve the ultimate goal of reducing or eliminating it altogether.
