For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to pursue a career in social work. Helping others is something I have always been passionate about and I hope to be able to make a difference in the lives of those around me. Throughout my life, I have always been the person my friends would go to when something was wrong and they needed to talk. Growing up, I also experienced close family members struggle with addiction and mental health problems. I have seen how damaging these experiences can be on an individual. I have also witnessed the effects these experiences can have on family relationships. My personal occurrences have instilled in me a further desire to become a social worker.

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is a national association of educational programs and individuals that confirms and improves the quality of social work education to become a professional job. CSWE puts in a countless amount of effort to strive for this mission by setting up a bachelor's and master’s degree programs in social work. On the other hand, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with approximately 132,000 members. I, Carlos Delgado, truly believe that my past and current work experience has served as preparation to pursue my master’s degree in social work. I am very aware that it takes plenty of hard work and dedication to be successful in a graduate program, yet I believe that my experiences along with my current work experience will assist me in gaining that success in a master’s program.

I learned there are different types of social degrees in the field of social work for a variety of social work occupations. I cannot stress enough that no matter what clients are not looking for your answers and it is not my job to give answers, but to give options for a end solution. I am graduating Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Public Health. I decided to study health because the subject is of interest to me personally and professionally. Throughout my coursework in the public health program, I was introduced to numerous problems that face the healthcare industry today as well as health problems on a global scale. When these problems arose in class, I would find myself thinking about ways that I could solve these problems that people were facing in our society. I want to take on health problems and assist children and parents in hospitals with grieving, coping and processing the healthcare system. I wanted to be able to help navigate the rough waters of hospital and healthcare systems. With my knowledge of health and my desire to help people, I want to pursue a career path where I would be able to work one on one with people that are in need of assistance especially with medical decision and aid in the coping process. I am deciding to pursue a Master’s in Social Work because I feel this will best help me move forward with my career goals.

Each Social worker is created in a unique way. Some are affected personally, by issues, people, and/or situations around them. I carry my own personal experiences from good to bad ones. Becoming a Master’s level Social Worker provides me with a larger spectrum to which I could dedicate myself. Accomplishing a Master degree in social work sets me a step closer to obtaining a licensure, being a therapist, a supervisor, a program director, and many other things. As social workers, we carry different roles which can be defined by whom we work for, as to working with individual (micro), institutions (mezzo) or within a system (macro).

To be in this field of work, a proper education is required. The Child Care Career Book says “a masters degree in social work is needed if this person would like to go into the mental health, research, or supervisory positions”. It also states that, “A doctorate id required for teaching and desirable for some research and administrative jobs”. Also a social worker at my school said

Social work at any level is working with people in an effort to understand the interaction between the individual and their environment. Once understood, social workers assume the role of providing accommodations on all three levels of interaction.
