Personal Statement
I would like to study Acting and the Theatrical Arts because I am very passionate about musical theatre, and have always wanted to play different roles, and make people happy and joyous through my performances. I want to pursue acting as a career because it has always been and interest of mine, and I have done a lot in school and my past to work towards finding a profession in Theatre. The course in general interests me because it includes everything that a person needs to know to improve their work as an actor, and because it will challenge me, and furthers me as an actress. The course does not only dwell on acting and performance, but also theatre itself, performances, dramatic texts, performance venues, and so on. I remember that I used to raid the attic, find old clothes, and dress myself up in them. I even used wigs, umbrellas, everything I could find to create a funny and lighthearted character that I could then present to my family out on the terrace. I always had a passion for creativity and making up people that I could then make people laugh with. I love the feeling of making people happy with something that I have done, and have an immense passion for performance. Every time I have seen a show in the theatre, I felt amazing after having seen a good performance. The emotion that the actors had for their show would rub off on me and I would be ecstatic for days after, thinking about the lights, and the costumes, and the songs. I want to do the exact same thing for other people, I want my work to inspire others and have them be glad through it. During my high school experience, I have truly embraced the arts, specifically performing arts. Tri-School Theatre (an extra-curricular, educational theatre program) has been a great opportunity where I have been able to appreciate my talents while learning about theatre with other students. Before I even entered high school, I obtained a love of theater and the performing arts. I have been singing and acting since I was nine, as well as on and off dancing since three. I am currently a theatrical stage manager, but I have always had a deep adoration for television. While studying stage management at University of California, Irvine, I was enrolled in a course called “Careers in Stage Management,” in which different speakers with backgrounds in stage or event management discussed both their careers and our potential career options. One particularly inspiring speaker went to school for theatrical stage management and went on to be an Assistant Director Trainee and then a Second Assistant Director. She emphasized the scheduling, organizational, and problem-solving similarities between the two positions. I saw my first Broadway show at only seven years old and have seen over ten more since then, due to the fact I live only two hours away from New York City by train. As a shy, reserved student, I found myself blossoming through the stage. I fell in love with the stage and auditioned for the middle school's play, A Christmas Carol. Fortunately, I was casted in the performance. I loved the experience so much that I auditioned for the next year's play and musical and got a part in those as well. The more time I spent on stage, the more confident I became. I felt like the stage was where I belonged. I had a passion for theater that began to distinguish like a flame when I entered high school.
I am a Pakistan-born United States resident. I lived in Pakistan until 2009 and worked as an elementary, middle and high school music and fine arts teacher as well as an actor, dancer and singer. I had no opportunity to be formally trained in acting and singing. I learned to sing, dance and act from private tutors. However, I 've always desired to be trained at a world-class acting school.
Theatre has always been my passion. Nobody told me to pursue theatre, it was a choice that I made my freshman year. I knew I had a fondness for singing, so I figured theatre would be a good opportunity for me to participate at a new school. After being one of two Freshmen chosen to be in the musical, I knew I had something special. I am very involved in theater here at Senior, for example, last year I played the part of Thenarier in Les Mis, it was super fun to play a character like that. I also do theater at Bellower theater here in Dubuque. It’s a smaller theater, but they have very fun summer shows for kids, I was in two of them over the summer 'The Happy Elf " and "The 25th" I played the character of Chip Tolentino. In the fall of my junior year I began working with my Dean to form an accelerated Independent Study dedicated to the study of acting and the practice of performance techniques. I continued this Independent Study in my senior year. Since I am pursuing a career in acting, I wanted to devote myself to in depth character analysis, monologue study, and acting methods. I benefited greatly from the one-on-one interaction with my Dean as my director. Not only has she taught acting at MICDS, but she is a working actress. This unique experience allowed me to receive immediate feedback regarding my acting skills, performances, and practice the necessary skill of taking direction. I want to make people feel things that they haven’t before, in any way possible! In my junior year of high school, I was on stage for all three of the school’s theatrical productions. I played a very minor character in “Enter Laughing,” I played Kit Kendrick, the basketball star, in the Thespian society exclusive production of “Nothing is the End of the World (Except for the End of the World)” and finally, I was the puppetmaster for “Little Shop of Horrors.” Our school was issued a grant so our theatre department could rent the Audrey II puppets from the same company that created the Broadway puppets, and that was a phenomenal experience for me. When first starting; theatre only seemed like a hobby. Performing did not sound like an ideal career for my life. Being familiar with performing, joining theatre seemed to be a simple task. Prior to high school, my only experience was a play in middle school, but no performances that made my heart yearn for more. Freshman year, I took theatre as a class, but was not interested in getting involved with events outside of the course. After a year of convincing from my teacher and peers, we settled on an agreement that I would audition for the upcoming show my sophomore year: Tarzan. After auditioning, being cast, and beginning to work with my director and peers, I felt a renowned connection to those around me, and to the art itself. After our first full run of the show, the flame was ignited. There were fireworks; a feeling that had never experienced in all my years of performing. At last, the passion was coming from within. The past four years, I have breathed, slept, eaten, thought and immersed myself in all thing pertaining to theatre. This is where I discovered to truly work in a team, where I could be without fear of being something I am not, and where I have found peace in the maddening swirl of day to day life, ironic in the fact that theatre is a hectic world. Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I have searched and searched for a talent that would give me a unique identity to make me stand out from my peers. When I was five years old, I was given the chance to be in a musical in our city's community theatre, PMT. This musical was "The Wizard of Oz", and I played the role of a munchkin in the Lollipop Guild. This initially sparked a great interest in theatre, and I fell in love with acting. I had an amazing mentor for my youth acting career, the late Jack Ewing. He played Harold Hill in PMT's production of "The Music Man", while I had the opportunity to play the role of Winthrop, the young boy that helps Harold Hill become a better person. (Jack later died a year before I had the chance to play the role of Harold Hill in my high school's production of "The Music Man Jr.") When I was about nine, PMT dissolved as an organization and therefore there was no community theatre around me for years, which put a setback in my interest and talent for theatre.
Running, wrestling, singing, forging, and working with my hands to create works of art are all interests that contribute to who I am. But any description of myself would be incomplete without discussing my involvement in theater. Over the last four years, I have had the amazing opportunity to become adopted into a family of loving, talented actors, who make up the Nooksack Valley Drama Department. This has been the greatest influence for growth in my life to prepare me for college and my future. It has directed me on my current path to becoming a confident leader and a reliable worker.
The reason why I want to major in acting is because it's something I've been doing ever since I was little, I've been doing it ever since I was in elementary school, though I haven't done it in a long time I eventually picked it back up when I was in the the grade back at Windsor Middle school, and it was Alice in Wonderland, but I would soon be titled Alice in Underland. After a few years I knew what I wanted to do for a living, and that was to become an actor, and the school I would like to go for that is FSU, otherwise known as FLorida State University. What I hope for in the acting program there, is that it will tech me things that I didn't know you could do back when I was in high school, I hope that we can do different styles of theater
