This passage from Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut explores the insights of an enlightened, young midget who happens to be the son of an atomic bomb founder – Dr. Felix Hoenikker. Newton “Newt” Hoenikker has completed an abstract painting and the narrator, John, awakens him to discuss his work of art. Previously, John arrives at Frank Hoenikker’s place, and spends the afternoon chatting with Newt, Angela Hoenikker, Newt and Frank’s older sister, and Julian Castle, a multi-millionaire. This occurs before “Papa” Monzano freezes from ice-nine, a substance that solidifies any body of water that comes in contact with it, created by Dr. Hoenikker. Newt finally realizes that the cat’s cradle is not really a cat’s cradle. This raises the question:
